• Blades are mounted differently onfront and rear wheels to maximizechopping and compaction in bothforward and reverse.

Smooth Wheel Option. If our tipselection does not meet your needs, consider Caterpillar smooth steel wheels. This option ensures that no matter whatlandfill tip you prefer, you get Caterpillarwheels built to our stringent specifications. Our manufacturing and researchengineers work together to design, buildand test a complete power train system. The wheels, a critical component to thetotal system, are manufactured in thesame facility as our landfill compactors. This ensures the entire system iscomplemented by each component.Altering critical components cancompromise our power train systemthat is designed for peak performance. If an off-the-shelf manufacturer’swheels are installed that do not meetour design specifications and do notbalance the load over our final drives, bearing life could be reduced substantiallyand cause premature wear out of othercomponents, resulting in unnecessarydowntime. This situation runs contraryto the Caterpillar goal to keep ourcustomers operating with maximumproductivity, performance andcompaction. This option also allowsour standard axle guard system towork with the components for whichit was designed.

Power Train836G power train components deliver dependable, reliable performance customers expect from Cat Landfill Compactors.

1 The Caterpillar 3456 Diesel Engineis based on one of the most popularCat engines available — the 3406E.It meets U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency Tier 2 emissions regulationsand Stage II EU Emissions Directive97/68/EC. The 3456 features481 net horsepower, compared tothe 473 horsepower available in theprevious model. The 3456 providesquick response, high productivityand exceptional service life whileimproving fuel efficiency up to17 percent.

• The 49 percent torque rise provideshigh lugging force during dozing andspreading applications and accelerationin high rimpull conditions.

– The torque curve effectivelymatches the transmission shiftpoints to provide maximumefficiency and faster cycle times.

• Two-piece articulated pistons, withforge steel crown and cast aluminumskirts, are gallery cooled by oil sprayfor improved oil control and increasedservice life. These gallery cooled steelpistons feature:

– Better ring cooling.

– Reduced emissions.

– Better performance.

– Improved fuel efficiency.

• Airflow matched turbocharger withpower rating helps reduce emissions.

• Nineteen percent more bearing areaallows the engine to operate at themaximum cylinder pressure.

• Higher cylinder pressure capabilityhelps reduce fuel consumption andimproves high altitude operation.

• Aftercooler lowers inlet chargetemperature and reduces thermalstress that can cause premature wearof pistons, rings, and liners.

• Cylinder head exhaust port sleevesreduce heat rejection, which resultsin less heat transfer into the waterjacket system.

• Advanced Diesel EngineManagement II (ADEM II) systemcontrols the fuel injector solenoidsto start and stop fuel injection. Thissystem provides automatic altitudecompensation, air filter restrictionindication, and will not allow theengine to fire until it has oil pressure— acting as cold start protection.

2 Separate engine cooling systemisolates the radiator and fan from theengine compartment, which provides:

– Lower sound levels.

– A cleaner engine compartment.

– A sloped hood for improvedviewing.

– More efficient cooling by drawingair through the side instead ofthrough the engine compartment.

• Advanced Modular Cooling System(AMOCS) improves coolingcapabilities with 10 cores usinga two-pass system.

– Coolant travels from the engineup the fan side of the cores overthe top and down the engine sideof the cores.

– With no top tank to remove and notilting of radiator guard required toremove any cores, serviceabilityis improved.

3 Caterpillar planetary, electronic, power shift transmission. Electronicshifting provides smooth, consistentshifts with finger tip controls housedin the steering system. Large diameterclutches coupled with four andfive planet gear trains provideadded durability for extended,trouble-free life.

• The programmable ControlledThrottle Shift works with thetransmission ECM to prolongtransmission life throughefficient shifting.

4 Impeller Clutch Torque Converteroffers improved rimpull controland extended tip and wheel life. The torque converter is equippedwith a lockup clutch and free wheelstator for improved fuel efficiency.

• Left pedal control allows theoperator to reduce rimpull from100 percent to 20 percent whilemaintaining high engine speed forslower controlled work withouta loss of power. After 20 percentis achieved, further pedal travelapplies the brake.

• Impeller clutch is locked in fullyengaged position for maximumengine power transfer.

• Lockup clutch provides directdrive efficiency for increasedproductivity and improved fueleconomy on long distance dozing.

5 Oil-enclosed, multiple-disc brakeson front axle provide consistentperformance and reliability throughheat rejection and easy serviceability.

• Inboard mounted brakes operateon the low-torque side of the finaldrive, requiring less braking force. The location of the brake discimproves axle oil circulation, promoting efficient cooling andheat dissipation. The overall resultis less heat build up and a longservice life.

• Parking brake is dry disc, springapplied, and oil released. It ismounted on the transmissiontransfer gear output shaft formanual operation.

• EMS II monitors the parking brakeand alerts the operator if the brakeis engaged.

Revolutionary electro-hydraulic controlsystem provides low-effort fingertipcontrol. Floor-mounted control podlever sends electrical signals to apilot valve mounted on the front frame. This moves the sound, heat and effortcaused by a hydraulic valve out of theoperator’s station.

1 Lift lines are in a higher location wheredamage from debris is less likely.

Low-effort, Assist, or STIC steeringare other results of innovative design. A new mechanical feedback systemand a redesigned valve ratio providequarter-turn wheel or side-to-side STICsteering. Unlike systems that rely onsteering wheel velocity to activatesteering cylinders, this system directlylinks steering wheel or STIC positionto articulation angle. This provides:

• Precise control.

• Quicker response.

• Dramatically reduced operatormotion and effort.

Load sensing steering maximizesmachine performance by directingpower to the steering system onlywhen the operator steers the machine. This allows more power to be appliedto the ground when the machine is notbeing steered. It also helps decreasefuel consumption because the steeringsystem does not constantly draw on the engine.

XT-3 and XT-5 hose, O-ring face seals, and large capacity lift cylinder top offthe hydraulic system, delivering theperformance and durability ownersexpect. Reliable components reducethe risk of leaks and blown lines, helping protect the environment, and reducing operating costs.

The Reversing Demand Fan is a speedcontrolled, hydraulic fan that providesmaximum cooling efficiency. Power isdirected through the fan system only whenit is needed and reverses automaticallyto purge debris. (Pressing rocker switchin cab may also manually reverse fan.)

Operator ControlsA revolutionary way to operate with easy-to-use, low-effort controls.

The 836G benefits significantly from thedramatic reduction in operator motioneffort provided by Assist steering, STICsteering, and hydraulic blade controls. These features make the 836G the easiestoperating machine in its size class.

1 Assist steering allows one handoperation of steering andtransmission controls. Unliketraditional steering, which rotatesmore than one full turn, the assiststeering wheel rotates approximately50 degrees in both directions. Tiltand telescoping steering column helpfit the machine to the operator.

2 STIC Control System (optional) is a revolutionary system thatintegrates steering and transmissioninto a single controller. Simple side-to-side motions of the operator’s leftarm turn the machine right or left.

• Transmission shifting forward, neutral or reverse is controlledby the operator’s fingers, andgear selection is controlled bythe operator’s thumb.

• Produce a fluid motion thatreduces effort and allows theoperator to work the machinefor long periods with little orno fatigue.

3 Floor-mounted electro-hydraulicblade controls are adjustable foreand aft, with a height-adjustablearmrest so that operators of anysize can find a comfortableoperating position. Single levercontrol allows operator to controlblade functions.
