He is two years old and came to us from a rescue situation. Ferrets make good pets, but remember that you are making a big commitment whenever you add an animal to your family. Ferrets live seven to ten years and are very mischievous. You will often see Finnegan enjoying his playtime in the animal room. This is because ferrets require a lot of stimulation to keep from getting bored. Ferrets require training and lots of interaction with their humans for proper socialization. A ferret left alone will play hide and seek with items they find in your home (they will hide things and you will spend weeks looking for them!) Ferrets are very social creatures that will form a tight bond with their humans and other ferrets. They require regular visits to the veterinarian and vaccinations similar to cats or dogs. While Finnegan is a domestic ferret he is related to the black-footed ferret which is native to North America. The black-footed ferret is an endangered species. They were brought to the edge of extinction and by 1986 only 18 remained in captivity and there were none found in the wild. Through diligent breeding and reintroduction practices there are now approximately 500 in the wild and another 300 living in breeding facilities. Finnegan likes to have lots of toys. DIRECTOR’S COLUMN:

Thanks to everyone who attended our annual membership meeting on May 14. Here are some of the highlights, just in case you missed it. The museum is growing, with more visitors, classes, and outreach programs than anytime in our 61 year history. We were able to upgrade the electrical systems in the building and installed a back-up generator this year to keep the animals warm and safe in a weather emergency.

Memo Alejandro, Dotti Cannon, Kate Colavecchio, Laurel LaPorte-Grimes, Michael Purcaro and Carleigh Schultz were elected to new three year board terms. We thanked Molly Devanney for her service as her term on the board has ended.

The following awards were presented for exceptional service to the museum:

Volunteer of the Year: Joe MonteiroIntern of the Year: Emma Perugini Businesses of the Year: Anne Miller Real Estate Community Service Award: Mayor Leo V. Diana

I’d like to add my thanks to everyone who supports the museum. Some make a donation, while others volunteer, register for classes, become a member, or recommend us to their friends. You are all part of the museum’s growth and success.

Best Regards,
