Atlantic Wall MuseumVisit the impressive remains of the

Atlantic Wall—Nazi Germany’s massiveline of coastal fortifications—atOostende, Belgium. The WWI AachenBattery is the Atlantic Wall’s most com-plete surviving battery of its kind. AndThe WWII Saltzwedel neu Battery is aremnant of the mighty defensive linethat ran from Norway to the French–Spanish border. In 1940, as Germany began its occu-

pation of Belgium, defense of capturedports and coastline fell to the Germannavy, and relied solely on captured guns.In early 1942, the German high commandordered construction of a continuouscoastal defense line, the Atlantic Wall. But despite the deployment of enor-mous resources, the ambitious programcould not be completed. Instead, theGermans simply built blockhouses toprotect coastal artillery and turn harborcities into fortresses.

Field Marshal Erwin Rommel inspectedthe Atlantic Wall in 1943 and implement-ed a plan to stop invaders on the beach-es, including the scattering of obstaclesand mines.Nazi propaganda touted the Atlantic

Wall. But on June 6, 1944, the Allies brokethrough, landing in Normandy. Still, mostharbors remained in German hands for along time, some until the war’s end.

The Saltzwedel neu Battery, initiallybuilt to protect the port of Oostende, was incorporated into the Atlantic Walland renamed the Tirpitz Battery.Equipped with four captured Belgian12cm guns, it was later armed with U-boat guns. Today, it retains most of itscomponents and endures as an exampleof a typical German coastal battery.
