It is my pleasure to congratulate the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) on the celebration of their 10th Anniversary.

As Patron of the CCRP, I am proud of the Organization’s continuous growth since its inception. Your involvement in varying outreach programmes and initiatives has effectively harnessed the talent, experience, and wisdom of our senior citizens.

Through the years, the CCRP, guided by your Motto: “Life to the Fullest” has focused on ensuring that seniors

realize their full potential and enjoy the quality of life they deserve. You continue to provide enriching avenues for retirees by exposing and empowering them to experience exciting new vocational and occupational ventures. These activities allow them the opportunity to continue making valuable contributions to the development of not just their immediate community, but also the wider Jamaica.

Your partnerships with agencies such as the National Council of Senior Citizens (NCSC), the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and the Mona Wellness and

Ageing Centre in providing essential information and support in the areas of health, wellness, and lifestyle have not gone unnoticed. The provision of benefits to retirees through your collaborations with leading and trusted providers of Health and Property Insurance Plans as well as several other discount partners is commendable. I also applaud your commitment to honour Jamaicans who have made and continue to make significant contributions to nation-building through your annual Living Legacy Award.

Through your engagement, you reflect the best of our Jamaican traditions of pride in family, caring for others, and the promotion of continued investment of our creative talents.

As you celebrate this milestone, I encourage you to be mindful that “Ageing is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength” -Betty Friedan.

I thank all who contribute to the effectiveness of the CCRP and wish for you every success in your future endeavours.

COMMENDATION BY MOST HON PROFESSOR SIR KENNETH HALL - CCRP LIVING LEGACY AWARDS LUNCHEON

Congratulations to the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) on their tenth anniversary and on their invaluable contribution to the welfare of seniors in Jamaica. The Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) is the brainchild of Mrs Jean Lowrie-Chin and is, indeed, a tribute to her mother whose life motivated her to reach out positively to others. Congratulations also to Mr Chin and the dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

Jamaica has an ageing population and its older persons are very diverse just as their needs are. No longer is age only about taking care of frail persons. It is about

helping an older person to be active, pursue active ageing and be empowered to live life to the maximum.

Research has shown that loneliness and health are the main concerns of older persons and it is knowledge of what is needed which drives the work of CCRP hence strengthening their contribution to seniors. CCRP, through its programme of workshops, group excursions and socials has played a sentinel role in facilitating seniors living “Life to the fullest”, its very appropriate motto for its over 10,000 members across Jamaica.

Caribbean Community of

Retired Persons (CCRP) offers a comprehensive programme recognizing the several components of ageing: Social as above and physical, financial and psychological with advocacy and activities for each need. Through their partnership with over 70 private sector companies , their discount parties, they offer benefits as an important contribution to improving the lives of seniors, recognizing all aspects of life.

Again, congratulations CCRP, Mrs Lowrie-Chin and the many Board members and staff who work tirelessly to deliver high-quality services and programmes to seniors across Jamaica.

On behalf of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, National Council for Senior Citizens, I take great pleasure in congratulating the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) on this august 10th anniversary celebration.

CCRP since its founding in 2010, has become well recognized as an advocate for older persons with a growing membersip of over 10,000. It has admirably committed itself to the empowerment of older persons to live life to the fullest. We are proud of CCRP’s contribution to the ageing agenda in Jamaica. Notable interventions such as health insurance for seniors, recognition of the distinguished service of outstanding seniors, raising public awareness of ageing issues and participation in research and the revision of the National Policy for Senior Citizens represent CCRP’s work toward an enabling and supportive environment we desire for senior citizens.

The National Council for Senior Citizens salutes CCRP as an important partner, a significant voice for the ageing population and a key stakeholder for the implementation of the revised National Policy for Senior Citizens. Over the years we have worked as partners, recognizing that the issues that affect older persons transcends gender, race, socioeconomic status and religious affiliation.

I am confident that CCRP will continue to play a significant role in making Jamaica a place where senior citizens live and participate actively in our society, where their rights are guaranteed, their contributions and capabilities recognized and where they enjoy a life of fulfilment, health and security.

On the 1st December 2019, an innovative policy was incepted for all members of the CCRP. Membership is available to all aged 50 and above and therefore includes senior citizens who have found it difficult to access health insurance coverage, because of age or underlying medical conditions or, in fact, both. Gallagher is proud to be a partner in this offering together with the CCRP and the underwriters, Sagicor.

The policy is designed to protect the members for the following main benefits:

1. Doctor’s visits2. Prescription drugs3. X rays and other

diagnostic procedures4. Hospital expenses5. Surgical benefits6. Optical and Dental7. Life coverage for J$500K8. Coverage for members

and dependents

There are many other

benefits available and included in the plan.

Initially, there was a period of open enrolment when any member could join without evidence of insurability and with no age limit. Since then, all new entrants will have to produce evidence of such and there is an age limit of 80. There will be a six-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions for new applicants.

The new scheme has proven to be very successful and, to date, nearly 8,500 members have signed up for the cover. After 9 months, the plan has paid out 83,000 claims at a total cost of J$600M. This is mainly under the headings as listed above.

The plan will renew at 1st December and it is likely that there will be an increase in the premiums payable in view of the claims experience. Discussions are ongoing as we seek to negotiate the renewal terms.

It is important for each member to ensure that all premiums are paid up to date as at renewal all persons in arrears will be terminated. This will mean that any reinstatement will require full evidence of insurability.

All members who have been diagnosed with chronic conditions, are urged to sign up with the National Health Fund and use the cards that they will provide for use at the pharmacy when purchasing certain drugs. This will have the impact of reducing the cost to each member, as there is a 20% co-payment to be made, and will also reduce the claims impact on the scheme and protect your premiums in the future.

Once again, Gallagher is very pleased to be associated with this plan which is seen as a major boost to the people of Jamaica and, in particular, our seniors.

CCRP HEALTH AND LIFE INSURANCE SCHEME

While wise money management is important at every stage of one’s life, it is especially critical for persons who are age 50 or older. It is against this background that JN General Insurance Company (JNGI) created an exclusive product, the JNGI Silver Shield Insurance Cover, for members of the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP).

The special rates are welcomed by Karen Gauntlett, a member of CCRP. For more than 40 years, she has consistently obtained motor insurance from the same provider. Switching her insurance provider and accessing the JNGI Silver Shield resulted in substantial savings for her.

“Every dollar counts,” she asserts, while disclosing that she saved $20,000 in the process.

The JNGI Silver Shield provides members with an attractive insurance coverage for their property and its contents, as well as a 10 per cent discount on motor vehicle insurance if their home is insured with JNGI. Members with JNGI

motor insurance will benefit from a 25 per cent JN Member discount, personal accident claim of up to $150,000 and accident forgiveness of up to $1 million. Additionally, the product provides free membership with the Jamaica Automobile Association (JAA), which provides roadside assistance among other convenient services, such as documental renewal.

Chris Hind, general manager, JN General Insurance Company, pointed out that it is important that persons are able to access the benefits and protection of home and motor insurance.

In relation to members of CCRP, Mr. Hind said that they would have worked hard over the years to acquire their property, whether it is a house or motor vehicle.

“It is therefore absolutely critical for them to have insurance to ensure peace of mind and be able to cushion any financial loss in the event of damage or destruction of property. Besides, a disaster can occur at any time, therefore, it is always

important to be prepared,” he emphasised.

“In the most severe cases, losses could run into millions of dollars. Not only would such a scenario be a lot to deal with emotionally, it could be almost impossible for them to restore or replace property without an insurance policy to fall back on,” Hind emphasised.

Jamaican icon of comedy, Oliver Samuels CD, was honoured for his 50 years of excellence in theatre with the Living Legacy Award of the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) on Wednesday, November 11.

Celebrated both locally and internationally as the King of Comedy, Oliver Samuel’s interest in theatre started at the tender age of seven and he believes that he did not choose comedy, rather “it chose me”.

The event was emceed by Joan McDonald who had a lively conversation with Oliver about his early years growing up on a banana plantation in St. Mary and what inspires his altruistic spirit: “I am very familiar with sufferation,” he says, “I cannot know a child is hungry and not help them.”

After attending St. Mary High School and Dinthill Technical High School, he worked in several clerical jobs at the Orange River Agricultural Station before venturing to Kingston.

Mr. Samuels then decided

to pursue his ambition, studying at the Jamaica School of Drama from 1971 to 1973, and doing odd jobs to earn his keep.

While studying drama, a nervous young Oliver Samuels attended an audition at the Little Theatre; this is where his theatre career began. Oliver’s highly successful 1971/72 National Pantomime debut put him on the map, when he played Moondrop in “Music Boy,” headlined by Louise Bennett and Ranny Williams. He went on to perform in 13 national pantomimes.

The medium of television was enormously successful for Oliver Samuels. In Jamaica, his comedy series on JBC during the 1980s and 1990s - “Oliver,” “Oliver at Large,” and “Large and In Charge” – brought him thousands of new fans at home and overseas. They laughed uproariously at his alter ego Olivius Adams’ antics, basically playing himself. He has also appeared in more than twenty other overseas

productions, including several with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Mr. Samuels occupies a unique position as a household name representing Jamaican theatre - and specifically, Jamaican humour - overseas. He quickly established a warm rapport with audiences across the Caribbean, and was adopted by the Jamaican diaspora in the United States and the UK, where he has toured regularly to highly receptive audiences. He has acted in a number of films, including the 1976 adaptation of Trevor Rhone’s “Smile Orange,” and the cult classic “Countryman” in 1982. He has also appeared in Canadian, Italian and German films.

Jamaican patois is a critical part of Oliver’s persona and performance. He describes cultural icon, Hon. Louise Bennett Coverley (Miss Lou) as his mentor. After a pantomime performance early in his

career, he recalls Miss Lou asking him, “Likkle boy, where yuh come from?” He was thrilled when his idol told him that his recital of her poem “Love Letta” was the best interpretation she had ever heard.

Among his many awards, Oliver Samuels was conferred with the with the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD) in 1978 and earlier this year, he was upgraded to the rank of Commander Class (CD).

O l i v e r S a m u e l ’s innate generosity and empathy with “ordinary Jamaicans” is a quality that has remained with him throughout his career. He has donated proceeds of his productions to several good causes. He has been a mentor for many young people – his own children, as well as many others he has “taken under his wing.” He regards his children as his greatest blessing in life.

CCRP Board Chair Jean Lowrie-Chin and Directors Michael Fraser, Sethuraman Kumaraswamy and Patricia Reid-Waugh presented

Oliver with his Living Legacy Award. Sponsors of the CCRP Living Legacy event, Gallagher Insurance Brokers represented by Mrs Saundra Bailey and Jamaica National General Insurance represented by Chris Hind presented special gifts to Oliver. COK-Sodality Credit Union represented by Ambassador Aloun Assamba also presented tablets to Oliver to donate to a charity of his choice.

Jean Lowrie-Chin, CCRP’s Founder and Executive Chair, in her welcome speech urged everyone to “Be an ‘Oliver’ in the lives of your elders. Share those light-hearted moments and grace them with positive conversations – so that even if you have to be physically distant, you are close in spirit.”

Christine McDonald-Nevers of the Jamaican Folk Singers backed by Stephen Shaw

Naar gave a rendition of Jamaican folk songs at the event which was streamed live from the PBCJ studio.

Manager, JNGI, co-sponsors of the award ceremony held on November 11.

We remember with love and admiration our late Board Directors of CCRP, Mrs. Syringa Marshall-Burnett CD, Professor Trevor Jackson and Mr. J.A. Lester Spaulding CD.

Internationally respected nurse educator Syringa Marshall-Burnett inspired us with her leadership and organisational skills. We

named her ‘prayer warrior’ as she would raise her voice at the beginning of each Board Meeting, inspiring us to be courageous in our work. We have named a Living Legacy award in her honour in the field of Health Care.

Mr. J. Lester Spaulding was also a foundation Board Member who guided us in

the implementation of our financial arrangements and before each Board Meeting, he would instruct our Accountant on the presentation of his report. Lester Spaulding, Chairman of the Board of the RJR-Gleaner Group and of several other large companies, found the time to give our fledging organisation sage

advice and mentorship, emphasising the importance of good governance and accountability.

Professor Trevor Jackson, well known for his philanthropic spirit, gave generously of his time to the organisation. Even after he retired and migrated to his home country Trinidad, he travelled to Jamaica for

our events – such was his dedication.

We were indeed blessed to have had the support of these outstanding individuals and we will be forever grateful for their legacy of dedication, excellence and altruism.

THANK YOU TO FORMER BOARD MEMBERSOn this our 10th Anniversary, we thank former Board Directors, Ambassador Aloun Ndombet-Assamba, Mrs Hermine Metcalfe, Mrs Sharon Dehaney-Walker, Mrs Donna Parchment-Brown and Mrs Karen Gauntlett.Ambassador Assamba, who has been appointed Director Emerita, was instrumental in preparing all the legal documents for the creation of CCRP. Despite the many demands of this project, she gave her services pro bono and continues to be very supportive of CCRP.

Mrs Hermine Metcalfe, top professional in the pharmaceutical industry, shared her immense knowledge with the Board, initiating workshops on mid-life challenges and liaising with pharmaceutical companies to provide vaccination against pneumonia for our members.Mrs Sharon Dehaney-Walker shared her expertise in business management, assisting us in our organisational planning and workshops for CCRP.

Mrs. Karen Gauntlett was a strong and reassuring member of our Board for seven years. She shared her business expertise and was a perennial volunteer for virtually all our events.

Mrs. Donna Parchment-Brown brought her legal expertise to the Board. Her membership was brief because, shortly after her appointment to the Board, she was named Custos of St. Andrew. She continues to be very supportive of CCRP.
