    SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

    February 24, 2014

    Friends,

I believe that a career in public service is one of the most rewarding

and humbling experiences a citizen can have in his or her lifetime. Itake pride every day that I have been able to serve the citizens of

Raleigh and Wake County for the past two decades: the Raleigh

Planning Commission (1993- 1996 ), Chairman of the Raleigh

Planning Commission (1997-2000), Raleigh City Council, At-

Large (2001-2003), and the North Carolina Senate, District 15

    (2004-present) .

No words can describe how humbled I have been to serve my

constituents in the North Carolina Senate. Writing legislation and

making tough decisions that will move the state in the right directionhas been a daunting task, but I feel that my Republican colleagues

and I have made prudent choices for North Carolina.

In my first two terms in the General Assembly, I sat in the back row

in the minority as liberals continued to make decisions that put our

state further into debt by focusing on more and larger government

programs as opposed to expanding business and employment

opportunities for our citizens. In 2010, voters across the state sent a

referendum to Raleigh demanding that we change direction. When

we took the majority, North Carolina had one of the highestunemployment rates in the nation, a $2.5 billion budget shortfall, a

mismanaged state health and retirement plan, and an array of

    government projects with huge appetites.

Since Republicans took over in 2010, I have served as an

Appropriations Committee co-chair. In this role, I helped write two

state budgets that curbed state spending, cut taxes, and reduced

regulations. Despite the substantial negative media coverage

and protests, the reforms that we have made are indeed working.

The unemployment rate has dropped faster than any other state in

the nation and employers are moving to North Carolina due to our

new lower and more competitive tax rates. Plus our state debt to

    the federal government is disappearing!

I know in my heart that I have done my best to serve the people of

Raleigh, Wake County, and North Carolina in the past two decades.

After careful collaboration with my family and friends, I have decidedthat my current term in the North Carolina Senate will be my last. I

look forward to being a civilian again and spending more time with

my wife, Duden, my children, Eleanor and Kemp, and my dog,

    Bubba.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support

over the years. Many of you have sent me letters, emails, and

phone calls of encouragement. Your friendship has meant a lot to

    me.

Theres still much more to do in my last months in office. I will still

be Senate Appropriations Co-Chair in 2014 so I will be busy! The

short session begins on May 14thand a laundry list of items still

remain that I believe will move our state in a positive direction. I will

continue to be the same conservative leader that you expect from

me as I finish out this term. The fight is not over!

As always, if I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to

    contact my office!

    God Bless,

    Neal Hunt
