Special Collections is very excited to announce that, after a lot of hard work, the Victorian Traveling Trunk Resource Center is completed and ready for check-out!

We are very excited to be able to offer this resource to educators and their students, and we hope they enjoy bringing history to life in their classrooms by taking a step back into the Victorian Era.

In addition to being a fun, interactive way for students to learn about a bygone era, our resource center includes lesson plans and activities for fourth, fifth, and eighth grade that fulfill the Georgia Performance Standards.

Our traveling resource center encompasses the reign of Queen Victoria, spanning the Gilded Age (1878-1889), and the Progressive Era (1890-1913). It includes original and reproduction Victorian artifacts, such as lye soap, fashion elements like lace gloves and a top hat, literature, afternoon tea items, and much more.

We sincerely hope to share our resources and knowl-edge with the community, and we believe our very first interactive traveling resource center is the perfect way to do so. The lesson plans, additional materials, and more information is available online at:http://l ibguides.gcsu.edu/victo-rian.

Please contact Kate Pope at (478) 445-0988 if you are inter-ested in reserv-ing the traveling resource center.

Over the last two semesters, Special Collections has been working on a secret project. In the quiet of the archives, we have begun the mass digitiza-tion of many of the Georgia College’s publications. This includes the Spectrum, the college’s year-book, Course Catalogs, and a few other university-related items. We have also digitized a couple of rare books, including a rare text on Sacred Harp music entitled Vocal Triad. All of this would not have been possible without our Book Eye 3r over-head scanner purchased with funds provided by the Office of Academic Affairs.

Each book that Special Collections has digitized will be made fully searchable, which makes re-search much easier. All of these items should be available online in the fall of this year. In addition to the materials we digitized, we will be making most

of the issues of The Colonnade from 1926 - 1976 avaliable. This materials were digitized and micro-film by through funding provided by The Colon-nade.

Here at Special Collections, the archives are a home away from home. They are part of our everyday lives, and they are so familiar to us that sometimes we forget how mysteri-ous they are to others who have never visited them. For this reason, on Saturday, Feb. 11, we opened the archives and invited Georgia College alumni, retired faculty and staff, and local community members to come and visit.

The open house, which took place during alumni weekend, welcomed alumni back to campus and allowed visitors to see some of what Special Collections has to offer. In addi-tion, it encouraged participation in the Legacy Project, an initiative that began last year with the goal of capturing the memories and sentiments of the history of the university and of the Milledgeville-Baldwin County area.

We had a number of visitors, including a group of alumni from the graduating class of 1962 who were interested in listening to tapes of the Golden Slipper performances during their time at Georgia College (then called the Women’s Col-lege of Georgia, or WC). They viewed our displays, looked through old yearbooks and photographs, and reminisced about their college days.

In addition, other alumni spoke with us about donating some of their memorabilia to Special Collections. One enthusiastic alumna said she would rather have her memorabilia pre-served and cared for in our archives than collecting dust at her house. We would have to agree!

We hope alumni will continue to visit the archives and even contribute to our collection. For more information on doing so, please do not hesitate to call or email us.

In honor of our alumni and all of the organizations that make Georgia College the flourishing campus it is, Special Collections has put together a new exhibit en-titled “Excellence in Organization.” The exhibit high-lights campus organizations through time, including sororities, fraternities, sports teams, clubs, and more.

As author Ryunosuke Satoro once said, “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” It is through organization and teamwork that we achieve excellence, and our exhibit highlights this through photographs and memorabilia from 1901 onward.

We encourage students, faculty, alumni, etc. to visit the exhibit on the second floor of the Library & Instruc-tional Technology Center in front of Special Collec-tions.

In addition, since the majority of the photographs featured in the exhibit were scanned from old Spec-trum yearbooks, we would love for everyone to visit our research room and look at these yearbooks more in-depth to see how organizations have shaped our campus since its conception. For more information, feel free to stop by and see us!

As summer study abroad trips approach, Special Collec-tions has started a new initiative that will showcase and preserve study abroad experiences.

The project, entitled “Letters from Home,” stems from the idea that students’ once-in-a-life-time exchange ex-periences deserve to be documented, preserved, and shared. Special Collections aims to do just that by ac-cepting letters, photos, emails, and other types of com-munication while students are overseas.

“This is a chance to share your experiences, learn from others and guarantee that your time abroad will be re-membered and preserved,” said Kate Pope, Georgia College archival associate.

The correspondence will document student life and learn-ing at GC.

Special Collections enlisted the help of Professor Macon McGinley’s publication layout and design course, and mass communication students Katlyn Mobley and Con-stantina Kokenes’ poster designs were chosen to pro-mote the project.

Special Collections is encouraging students who wish to participate in “Letters from Home” to correspond through Facebook, the Special Collections blog, or by mailing Special Collections, CBX 043, Milledgeville, Ga. 31061. For more information call (478) 445-0988.
