The project aims to develop and transfer tools in the field of eco-design applied to the furniture industry and, more specifically, to

the furniture itself. On the basis of a comparative analysis of existing tools and a pilot project, Ecomovel will provide the following : an eco-design guide, a tool kit to support the eco-design implementation as well as a self-assessment for companies. The project will be completed with the execution of a eco-design event for the furniture industry, to educate not also the public in general but also companies in other sectors.

Easy Finance is aimed at reinforcing innovative assistance services for enterprises in order to increase their

access to financing through a transnational system of intensive use of innovation and knowledge technologies. In the pursuit of creating new innovative enterprises and of injecting capital in growth enterprises, the project will create new methodologies and will propose a shared space of resources between business development and innovation centres in the Mediterranean.

IP-SmEs project proposes to boost competitiveness, innovation and technology transfer actions of SMEs in Med Area improving the actual assistance by BIOs and Institutions aiming at increasing SMEs awareness

and enforcement toward IP instruments. This model, with 5 innovative services, transnational I&TT operations and related upgrade of operators, will be tested directly to local selected SMEs, capitalised into guidelines and roadmap for a law proposal and linked to National and EU networks.

Upcoming project events IPR EXPERT WORKSHOP IN MARSEILLE – 24TH OF JANUARY 2011 In the framework of the project activities development, the Chamber of Commerce of Marseille will host in January an international workshop which will gather Experts in the Intellectual Property matters from all countries directly involved in the project. This one-day workshop represents an important step of the Component 3 “Benchmarking analysis and selection of innovative IPR services”. Starting from the reports produced by the partners on the local SMEs needs in terms of Intellectual Property Rights, the experts will identify five innovative services to be later implemented in the pilot actions. 2ND STEERING COMMITTEE IN MARSEILLE – 7TH AND 8TH OF MARCH 2011

Project Partners will meet to take the stock of the situation about project activities evolution, especially focusing the attention on the development of the five innovative services produced by Component 3 and on the preparation of the related training modules for the implementation of the Pilot Actions.

The IRH-Med project “Innovative Residential Housing for the Mediterranean” seeks to improve the competitiveness

of innovative and sustainable models for housing able to retain the Mediterranean identity and taking into account region specific socio-economic conditions. To this end, the specific objectives that the project aims to achieve are to facilitate the development of common guidelines and policy approaches for the labelling of Mediterranean buildings. The approach shall boost the use of sustainable and responsible models of housing, while developing market opportunities for SMEs in this field.

KnowInTarget aims at producing a cohesive framework supporting adoption of “knowledge and innovation society” concept at the regional level, with a transnational

and cross-sector approach/methodology, laying on the needs for: targeted knowledge transfer to SMEs, coordinated, cross-sector and goal-oriented action with the synergetic participation of key actors of all categories/levels concerned, in designing, testing and applying rational strategies for “Knowledge Society” at the regional level.

The project aims to realize the M.E.I.D. model to plan, build and govern sustainable Industrial Areas.The model goal is to enhance capacities and decision tools of Competent Authorities to integrate environmental friendly solutions into the Regional and Interregional Development Strategies related to Industrial Policy. Thanks to the integration approach, SMEs will be the first beneficiaries, in terms of fostering eco-innovation, competitiveness and transnational cooperation.

The main objective of the project is the implementation of a Mediterranean Network of Technological Interface

Structures « technopolis », for the renovation of the existing ones and the expansion to new regions and to a large number of small and medium sized cities in the Mediterranean sea, the dynamics of innovation, knowledge economy and information society, in general. The project MED TECHNOPOLIS includes three essential components: the creation of a Mediterranean Network of Technological Interface Structures « technopolis », the launch of a Mediterranean cycle of Training-Action course, for executives and entrepreneurs, the implementation of Regional Action Plans. The project will establish an EGTC- European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation MED TECHNOPOLIS, in the last phase of the project.

Main objective of the project is to contribute to the efficient technology and knowledge transfer from university to industry for increasing economic growth. R&D Industry aims

at SMEs, which are unable to achieve proper knowledge transfer from university due to their limited resources. R&D Industry will identify SMEs’ R&D lacks and support them to benefit from newest university’s research achievements. In addition, the developed platform and networking activities will strengthen the university-SME cooperation.

2InS aims at the design and validation through pilot actions of an integrated, transnationally conseptualized and

coordinated framework for the creation of competent, viable collaborative platforms “SMEs' Innovation and Internationalization Support Clusters" - 2InS Clusters promoting and enhancing regional competitiveness and knowledge society, through the support of knowledge-based and internationalized entrepreneurship. The emphasis will be placed on Organizations/Structures supporting Knowledge Transfer and development of Entrepreneurship, and on corresponding Governmental Agencies. The 2InS Clusters will cooperate in the frame of a Transnational Expert Network, which will act as a powerful means for collection, processing and re-distribution of knowledge, providing also for coordinated and harmonized action and effective cooperation among the Clusters and consequently, their local systems. 2InS further focuses on Creative Economy-related businesses, considered as potential drivers of sustainable regional socio-economic development in MED area.

Sustainable growth and economic development depends on Creativity and Innovation as the main drivers for competitivenes. In this context the

CreaMED Alliance is an initiative aimed at fostering Creativity and Innovation between MED Regions at both, public and private level, as a route to a Regional Sustainable Development. The project aim is to encouragie mutual policy learning, synergies and cooperation in order to provide a framework for developing Regional Innovation Policies within the Mediterranean Area.

ECOMARK’s main objective is to promote and apply the Eco Industrial parks as an eco alternative to Green Marketing principle to Industrial Areas where several SMEs are settled, raising environmental awareness among the actors of the industrial sector, without negative impacts onto the

entrepreneurial goals. Through concrete actions that consider environment and profit as equally important, the SMEs are stimulated either to settle in Eco Industrial parks or to convert to ‘sustainability’ in an existing Industrial Area. The project will provide : guidelines for Green Marketing Plans, schemes for innovative services and demonstration of a reduced environmental impact induced by industrial areas on the local community.

EMMA project born by the necessity to sustain the public-private cooperation process in the field of SMEs with women management, particularly in this period of economic worldwide crisis. The milestones of project are: the development of a

Public-Private Med round table for defining guidelines to improve SMEs environment, realisation of guidance points on territories, setting up of 4 transnational events, adopting ICT facilities for communication.

Knowledge intensive activities (CREATIVE or KNOWLEDGE CLUSTERS) are driving forces

of growing importance. They comprise cultural industries, high-tech branches, higher education institutions and advanced producer services. This project enhances the cooperation of key institutional and economic actors and promotes the “knowledge economy” in the territories of 4 countries of the MED space by launching a transnational dialogue platform on policies, tools and strategies for attracting and creating “innovation".

Hidden Innovation determines a form of innovation not reflected in traditional activities, such as R&D, but rather in organisational forms, business models and absorption of existing technologies. HIDDEN’s focus is to ensure synergies and create a transnational public-private

network providing a joint strategy on addressing the Hidden Innovation concept in innovation development policies.

The main project objectives are to strengthen the potential of innovation of the cooperative enterprises in fishery, agriculture, tourism and environmental sectors and to promote them on the international markets. The main activities include: a survey on regional policies supporting the

cooperative entrepreneurship, a common action plan for the integration of cooperative systems, a feasibility study for the “clusterization” of MED cooperatives of the sectors identified, pilot projects and online services.

The main project objective is to foster the competitiveness of MED SMEs promoting a new public-private partnership to support innovation based on a more open approach of knowledge and technology transfer and on a strong public-private cooperation. The main activities

include: innovation providers’ quality certification system, analysis of existent public-private mechanisms of cooperation to fund innovation, trans-national public-private working groups, pilot projects and open sciences initiatives. .

The main goal of InnoNauTICs is to reinforce the innovation ability of the SMEs of the nautical sector through the diffusion of innovative solutions and the

creation of transnational initiatives of cooperation that allow the modernization of a key sector for the insular economy in the Mediterranean. A new technological platform will increase the knowledge degree of internal competitiveness and strengthen the start-up of pilot actions of the Mediterranean nautical sector enterprises.

Med-KED proposes to approach Knowledge Based Enterprises development in the MED area. To match this objective, the project will provide the following activities and outputs : defining a MED transnational strategy, creating a MED KED transnational network

allowing the exchange of experiences, know-how and best practices, implementation of joint approach, promoting their mainstreaming.

PACMAn aims at stimulating the innovative and dynamic capacities of the agro-food sector in MED regions. Through collaboration between transnational economic development

actors and public authorities, the project will focus on key factors of agro-food clusters in MED areas, in light of the latest economic changes. PACMan will implement pilot actions, coupled with a shared joint analysis and will provide new horizontal solutions to the cluster criticalities and inputs for the elaboration of integrated policies, territorial marketing and a sustainable innovative model to support the agro-food sector expansion at international level.

The main goal of the project is to improve regional policy across Med area in retail sector innovation, promoting an effective improvement of knowledge among partners and designing innovative tools for SMEs of

the retail sector. REINPO RETAIL will create a knowledge network to allow the exchange of knowledge and expertise. The project acts as a testing laboratory for innovative actions promoting competitiveness.

In Responsible MED 9 partners use transnational cooperation to evaluate and capitalise on corporate social responsibility as a tool for competitiveness. Based on

regional analysis and benchmarking, a common methodology will be developed and tested to evaluate and monitor links between Corporate Social Responsibility policy and levels of innovation and competitiveness. In promoting this concept as added value for SMEs, the project guarantees real economic impact and supports sustainability and equality in the MED area.

WIDE project aims at

strengthening Micro/SMEs organizational innovation capacities, through strategic cooperation between MED public and private actors to deal with Euro-Mediterranean development process. The core activities of the project will favour MSMEs performances upgrading in terms of the new offered products and services, increase of international competitiveness, “time-to–profit” and posit impact on growth and job creation within the focused territories (Italy, France, Spain and Greece). The main concrete actions include: the definition of public/private partnership solutions to improve coordination of MED innovation key actors, the implementation of customized paths to boost MSMEs organizational innovation, joint strategies between public and private actors to catch Mediterranean market opportunities.

TEMA (Technology-based Environmental Enterprises Market Approach) seeks to encourage Environmental Technology based SMEs to surpass the regional dimension and develop more

internationalised activities. The project, developed by a participative-sector approach, will produce, through regional pilot tests, a methodology for the internationalisation and valorisation of Technology-based Environmental SMEs, based on a reinforcement of strategic cooperation between economic development actors, public bodies and SMEs.

The project is geared to ensure sustainable planning and development of the wood energy sector in the Mediterranean space with regards to the sustainable development principles and to foster a territorial cohesion policy. The project will develop a joint framework for underpinning the experimentation of innovative solutions. The project milestones include: designing the online MED resource base, providing an impact assessment tool to help decision makers and economic stakeholders when planning or assessing a wood energy project, formulating policy recommendations for a sustainable development of the wood energy sector in the MED space.

The point of departure of In.FLOW.ence is the notion that policentricity is a strategic concept to foster territorially integrated, sustainable regional development. In.FLOW.ence will map and analyse the potential for functional policentricity in the Mediterranean regions. In.FLOW.ence will also investigate how an INCLUSIVE and PARTICIPATIVE governance can contribute to a balanced spatial and sustainable development within the regions by involving three levels of actors: broader society, local institutions, economic key actors.

Project aims at improving and address territorial governance of Med rural areas towards sustainability through an innovative integrated planning model comprising: integrated social, economic, environmental analysis, assessment of institutional framework and review of success governance modes, establishment of communities participation process, definition of 4 strategic pilot plan patterns and drawing up of 4 key interventions in the involved areas, transnational synergies for the planning model execution.

OTREMED begins from the need to provide public bodies with competence in spatial planning a tool to facilitate decision making for the territorial governance, consistent with the structure and the dynamics associated with uniqueness of the Mediterranean.

13 actions consistent with the sustainable and balanced development of the territory will be carried out. Project results will be capitalized to the whole MED space and will improve the territorial competitiveness.

The aim is to design a common agrochemical plastic packaging waste management scheme to protect the natural resources and valorise waste materials. This scheme will be based on adapting

compatible elements of ongoing national schemes where such schemes exist. It will be coherent and will exploit the research results developed by the system of valorization of agricultural plastic waste Labelagriwaste. The project will pilot test the proposed scheme in the countries where no scheme exists.

Protected Areas play an important role for sustainable territorial policies.Often perceived as a limit to economical growth, protected areas have to face up anthropic pressures reconciling economic

interests with ecological requirements. New integrated plans based on a transnational framework will be fostered to improve protected areas sustainable growth. Increasing awareness and diminishing economical and social impacts are instances considered by the project to avoid the loss of MED ecological balance.

APICE proposes a decision-making approach and related set of mitigation measures that assume the impact of air pollution sources as driver for the coast management in port-cities. This model is based on a stronger coordination of environmental and spatial planning policies, leading to

curb emissions and preserving economic potentialities of port-cities. Results will be owned by some of the main MED port-cities to move towards the attainments of the key objectives of EU Integrated Maritime Policy.

The project aims to improve the coordination of regional maritime policies, between themselves and with National, European and Mediterranean levels of governance. Fourteen regional partners and the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) will carry out an overview of the policies implemented and their governance, will identify pilot coastal zones for transnational management, operational tools to aid in common decision-making. They will develop means to disseminate these results in order to encourage integrated maritime management and the sustainable development of coastal zones for the different levels of coastal governance. The partnership with the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) will allow the results to be shared with the fifty Regions of the inter-Mediterranean Commission and will encourage discussions with the departments of the European Commission and the Action Centres of the Mediterranean Action Plan.

The growing use of Renewable Energy Sources is leading to a new awareness about their compatibility with landscape and heritage preservation policies. This project wants to investigate and evaluate the impacts that a non-regulated

diffusion of renewable energy sources could cause on Mediterranean territories and landscapes. By connecting energy and territorial planning, partners will identify suitable strategies for considering ecological, landscape and heritage aspects while setting up renewable energy sources promotion policies.

The aim of MEDIWAT is to provide innovative and sustainable technical, operational and managerial solutions for tackling problems caused by water resources quality worsening and shortage in Med insular context. The main deliverables of the project will be: a web database and advisory

platform through which realizing and maintaining an inter-islands network of expertise and cooperation as well as two strategic master plans for effective and sustainable management of water resources in small and large Med islands.

MedPAN is the network of marine protected areas managers in the Mediterranean. The objective of the MedPAN North project is to improve the management effectiveness of MPAs, including marine Natura 2000 sites, to benefit the marine environment. It

will be reached through activities in 4 components: Innovative aspects of marine protected areas management, sustainable management of fisheries, sustainable management of tourism, information, communication and

capitalisation.

Rural territories participating in the project, inspired by European Landscape Convention, seek to valorise and transform its common Mediterranean landscape not only into a mark of identity but also into a driving force for territorial

development of European rural areas The partners will develop a common methodology and pilot actions in landscape planning allowing to set up an innovative and participative model of governance and sustainable territorial development based on landscape.

The main idea of the project is to promote a coherent framework of governance based on spatial planning and management practices able to carry a sustainable development. To that end, three lines of intervention have been

identified: to raise the awareness of the local actors to give evidence of the soil degradation processes over recent decades, development of operational instruments which give evidence of the relation between soil consumption and territorial planning policies, large scale diffusion of the deliverables within the local and economic actors, environment protection associations and citizens.

The information system developed during the project aims at giving evidence of the possible balance between economic development and environment protection.

SylvaMED intends to facilitate

innovative integration of forests environmental services into regional policies. Mediterranean forest ecosystems provide multiple goods and services, and are key to the socio-economic development of rural zones and to the well-being of urban populations. Many of these forest collective goods are crucial to environmental sustainability but currently unrecognized. Quantification of their value and field experiments will allow for their policy uptake.

The project aims at the development and demonstration of an integrated approach for monitoring and controlling water losses in drinking water supply systems. This objective will be pursued through the following actions : establishment of appropriate water loss reduction strategy, the development of decision support system tool to reduce water losses, the demonstration of the developed tool and of the corresponding water loss reduction measures in the partners’ areas, and critical evaluation of the results.

Upcoming event : The SylvaMED project will participate to the second Mediterranean Forest Week, in Avignon from 5th to 8th of April 2011. The event will be focused on biodiversity of Mediterranean forests and the project will bring its perspectives on its economic valorisation and the implementation of practical experiences of payment systems for forest environmental services in the Mediterranean. www.sylvamed.eu [email protected]

Enermed aims to coordinate and improve the regional policies of renewable energies. The project intends to persue this objective through: the creation of a

long lasting framework of regional cooperation (EGTC-type) in the field of renewable energies, the convergence of the regional systems in support of decisions, the creation of a database on renewable energies in the Mediterranean including the good practices in matter of regional strategies to support the development of the renewable energies.

The project deals with the dissemination and implementation in the Mediterranean regions of the successful methodology named “European Energy Award – eea®” which rewards cities and towns with a label for outstanding efforts in the governance of energy related

fields. Main activities and outputs of the project include: transfer the eea® methodology to the partners through training sessions and the implementation of the eea® in selected municipalities. The project will end with the creation of a best practice catalogue and policy recommandations aimed at regional governements and municipalities.

SCORE will support the implementation of sustainable energy policies in the construction sector in fragile coastal and rural MED areas with exceptional landscape values, exploiting eco-innovative potential, using traditional building elements combined with

innovative green technologies. The transnational cooperation will develop a bench learning model, foster sustainable construction and create transferable innovative tools for energy-efficient building practices.

Public bodies play a key role in energy

efficiency policies as more than 50% of the GHG emissions and up to 80% of energy consumption come from local communities. The main project idea is to favour the creation of local Public Private Partnership promoted and coordinated by association of municipalities or provinces which involve both small municipalities and public and private actors active in the field of energy . A double fold campaign, both at local and International level, targeted at citizens, entrepreneurs will follow project’s implementation to promote energy responsability in daily behaviors and in business strategy. Project outputs are as follows : enhancement of energy performance of Med area towards the goal of Zero Emission Community, attraction of private funding on initiatives of sustainable economic development, creation of new businesses and job opportunities in a framework of local sustainable development, behavioural changes in citizenship of the involved areas and their deep engagement in Zero Emission community realization, adoption, by other local institutions beyond project partnership, of the scheme and of energy efficiency policies.

The core objective of TOSCA is to improve the quality, speed and effectiveness of decision-making process in case of marine accidents (oil pollution, SAR Operations) in Mediterranenan, by the development of a long lasting network of local authorities, policy

makers and scientists and by the implementation of technical and decision support tools.

Till now the control of fires has been based on theoretical models or on traditional experiences. The

negative data emerged in “Forest fires in Europe 2007” induce to reconsider the current strategies and address toward the search of new solutions. The main objective of Cyp.Fire is to demonstrate that cypress made fire-breaks represent an innovative way to replace the traditional fire-breaks with better economic and ecological results in fire control.

The innovative aspects of TOSCA is to implement an integrated and scientific sustainable monitoring/forecasting design based on state of the art technology that will be implemented at the territorial scale and for local needs through the following steps: analysis of past dramatic events and state-of-the art in terms of methodologies, instruments and response plans, setting-up of an observational network based on HF radar and drifters providing direct information on ocean currents, coupled with other instruments and models, assessment of the system considering different case scenarios.

Mediterranean forest ecosystems now show the first damages linked notably to

climate change. Their managers are mostly unable to react properly. Through the project, the partners aim to develop, share and disseminate efficient management tools and techniques to foster the adaptation of these natural areas to a modified climate. All commonly-agreed solutions will be made available to territorial managers and decision-makers and will be disseminated at national and European level.

The project focuses on the promotion of sustainable mobility in small and medium urban contexts, in order to make people use the bicycle as daily mean of transport. New services and facilities for cycling, as well as the

implementation of innovative and integrated solutions supporting the use of bikes, will lead to an enhanced quality of life and health of citizens and tourists. The specific objectives of CYCLO project are :design and implement bike-friendly systems in small and medium cities, develop local strategies to promote the use of bicycles as intermodality and tourism means, increase the awareness and knowledge of public and private key-actors about cycling policies, enhance public/private partnerships for local sustainable development, disseminate EU policies related to the use of bicycles.

The project originates from the development of the traffic of chemicals in the Mediterranean and

aims to reach these main objectives: promote cooperation among chemical districts and between them and the main harbours, improve integration between harbours/hinterlands, sustain intermodality, reinforce the railways/waterways transportation for chemical products, promote a transfer of know-how and safety technologies, harmonize regulations and policies.

The project aims to define and agree upon a common strategy for improving mobility and territorial accessibility of transport and logistic systems of MED area, developing connections between local and regional networks with the Trans-European Network of Transportation. Project activities will lead to designing and implementing an ad hoc organisational model for the development of logistic services and value-added activities in peripheral areas with fragmented and weak production systems. Through the active participation of key private and public actors, the projects forsees the creation of a Mediterranean Observatory.

The project concerns the congestion of shipping systems because of bottlenecks at the access of urban ports, deepening: infrastructural and intermodal criticality in interregional/local transportation networks, economic influence and environmental impacts of shipping in the coastal metropolitan systems and their hinterland. The project will apply a new system of guidelines to integrate regional planning and port management to overcome the dichotomy between Maritime and transport policies and urban/local sustainable development of the areas surrounding the ports.

Integration based on a more efficient junction between harbour and the inland system together with improved accessibility can be the key to success in undertaking the support of inshore areas. The project aims at developing strategies to increase the competitiveness of some areas, by improving accessibility between inshore and inland areas, acting not only on infrastructures but also by creating linear network systems where environmental elements can be integrated with territorial functions.

FREIGHT4ALL aims at tackling the

fragmented functioning of transnational multimodal freight transport chains by providing an interoperable and distributed ICT solution. It will facilitate remote collaboration of the involved parties and jointly use of available e-logistics systems, thus strengthening territorial cohesion and providing cost effective and sustainable services. The real life cases and extensive communication program will effectively capitalise results to the wider transport community.

The project copes with the mobility problems in areas affected by weak demand of transport, characterized by inefficient public transport systems and widespread use of private car. Aim of the project is

to enhance, support and integrate local public transport making it more flexible and less expensive through: the creation of networks, the experimentation of light mobility, info mobility and intermodal transport for people, the use of new technologies and sensitization of decision makers at different levels.
