Run with it.MAIN

EVENTCITYmy

There is an unfinished project currently waiting in Yella, Ethiopia that could be providing clean drinking water to the 18,000 people in the village.

Envision Financial’s 8th Annual Run for Water on May 31 needs to raise $150,000 to complete the large-scale water project that began last year.

Staging the run itself requires a lot of money, and while many of the costs are covered through sponsorships, some of the funds must pay expenses.

“To close roads, we need to pay for every police member involved, we need to pay for traffic control, for ambulance, for medals, shirts, chip timing, et cetera,” says Run for Water executive director, Peg Peters.

When someone signs up for the five-kilometre run they pay a mandatory registration fee of $25. Of that, 15 to 20 per cent goes towards helping the people of Yella get clean water, but 100 per cent  of individually fundraised money goes towards the cause.

“Our biggest goal is to convert runners into fundraisers this year. Usually, less than 10 per cent of runners fundraise,

the community doesn’t know how to fix a pump or can’t afford the diesel,” says Peters.

Instead, a system of pipes uses gravity to deliver the uncontaminated water to 45 different water points.

It costs only $35 to bring each person clean drinking water and change a life forever.

Another project is Kids4Caro through Run for Water’s 50 partner schools throughout the Lower Mainland, that encourages students to fundraise to help build a school and bring clean water to the village of Caro, Ethiopia.

“Girls typically have to walk for four hours to find water for their family and the water they get is contaminated and full of disease,” says Peters. “This project will change everything. Girls will get to go to school and they will have access to clean water for the first time in their lives.”

They are also partnering with imagine1day.ca  - a charity from Vancouver that works in Ethiopia doing educational transformation.

For more information or to register to race, visit runforwater.ca

so we see huge potential for growth,” says Peters. “Our goal is to do our best to share the story of exactly where their money is going and how it is being used, and hope that our transparency appeals to people to get them involved.”

The biggest change that Peters has noticed over the past eight years is how large the event has become, attracting nearly 5,000 people last year.

Regardless of the complications of holding such a high caliber and growing run, it’s all worth it for Peters and the team of part-time staff and volunteers, who are excited that an event with such global impact was started in Abbotsford.

“It is unlike any other race or marathon event in B.C.,” he says. “It allows competitive runners to have a great experience, and also allows families to walk with strollers around Mill Lake.”

To bring water to the people of Yella, the goal is to complete the gravity flow water system that uses technology suitable for the community.

“It doesn’t make any sense to put in a diesel generator with a pump when

Spring is a time of renewal, when nature comes to life, creating a palette of fresh, light colours.

Spring fashion echoes this trend, producing a season of pastel and vibrant shades that bring your

wardrobe to life.

Tones such as violet, melon, tangerine and avocado are popular choices in looks that can be either casual or dressy.

Try one of these shades in a flirty spring dress or, for the guys, in a T-shirt paired with comfy khaki trousers.

Or keep your look simple and choose an attention-getting accessory, such as a purse in a fun floral design.

The Farmer and the FoodieAs swiftly as the mighty Fraser flows in June, so quickly has time swept past us since our grand opening five years ago. And not only have we survived, but we’ve come to call the most dedi-cated team of co-workers our friends, we’ve been humbled by the community support and swelled with pride watch-ing our guests cook healthy and deli-cious meals to share with loved ones.

Here are five reasons you should come by to give us a high five this weekend.

Loads of great $5 specials — 8 packs of chicken drumsticks, BC Hothouse mixed bag, local jams, smokie packs, and many more in-store deals.

Our BBQ will be serving $5 ham-

Sticky Chicken

PROVIDED BY LEPP FARM MARKET

INGREDIENTS:2 1/2 - 3 lbs Lepp’s chicken pieces (I prefer skinless, bone-in

drumsticks or thighs)

1/4 cup honey

3 tbsp soy sauce

2 tbsp cornstarch

1 tsp freshly grated ginger Best kitchen tip I ever learned: store your ginger in the freezer, and grate the frozen ginger on a rasp or fine grater, you don’t even need to peel it)

3-4 cloves garlic, minced or crushed

1/4 cup fresh orange juice

1/3 cup ketchup

to taste salt and pepper

few drops hot sauce (optional, to taste)

INSTRUCTIONS:1 Mix all sauce ingredients together.

2 Marinate the chicken overnight or bake right away.

3 Place chicken pieces in a large enough pan to hold in a single layer and pour sauce over. Cover with foil, and bake in a 350° oven for 1 1/2 hours or until chicken is nicely browned and tender. Baste occasionally.

4 Remove the foil for the last 15 min-utes to brown the chicken. Watch carefully as the honey might cause it to brown quickly.

For even more helpful tips on this recipe go to leppfarmmarket.com/recipes

In honor of our 5th Anniversary, I am sharing one of the first recipes we put on our website. It still remains one of my favourite ways to cook chicken for a crowd. As our children were growing up, this recipe adapted from Better Baking was often my go-to dinner on a busy day. It’s a great make-ahead dish, as you can mix the ingredients in the baking pan, pop the dish in the fridge to marinate, and it’s ready bake in the oven. By the time the homework is done and the rice is cooked, the chicken has baked into a gorgeous sticky, tangy and not overly sweet dish. Young or old can’t resist a simple “sweet and sour chicken”, making it special enough for guests.

Insulation plays a key role in keeping our homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But the benefits can go well beyond achieving basic requirements. Quality insulation can provide added benefits that contribute to the comfort, safety and efficiency of a home, including:

SOUND ABSORBENCY Life is loud, but the right choice of insulation can help reduce noise transfer throughout your home. Insulating between floors and interior walls can help create a peaceful sanctuary.

A SAFE INDOOR ENVIRONMENTChoosing insulation that is water repellent and resistant to mold, mildew, fungi, bacterial growth and rot can help to prevent common issues behind your walls that may pose serious health and safety concerns and lead to costly repairs. Look to products that will not off-gas or emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

SAVINGS A properly insulated building will be more energy efficient, a benefit that will continue to provide return on investment long after the install is complete. The result is reduced heating and cooling costs, less stress on your furnace and air conditioner (potentially leading to a longer equipment lifespan) and, at the end of day, more money in your pocket.

PERFORMANCE It’s important to remember that not all insulations are created equal. Some insulations can sag or contract over time, leaving gaps that can let outdoor air in and conditioned air out. Choosing insulation that is dimensionally stable, durable and that offers long-term thermal performance will ensure your home can stand up in even the most challenging conditions.

When it comes to quality, comfort, safety and efficiency, is basic really the best choice? Quality counts when it comes to all building materials. Always look for products that will deliver benefits well beyond the status quo.

The benefits of a well-insulated home
