If you thought last year’s carvings were spectacular, wait until you see what will be created this year! Twenty carvers will be ring up their chainsaws at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24. This is the Campbell River Shoreline Arts Society’s 19th year holding the Transfor-mations On the Shore competition. As in past years, the competition is at Frank James Park on the Island Highway in Willow Point, Campbell River. The carvers start on Wednesday morning and nish at 7 p.m. They continue to carve on Thursday and Friday while a small army of volunteers take away all the bits of wood and sawdust that don’t belong. By Saturday, most of the carvers take a break and compete in the Quick Carve competition with the carvings being offered for sale by live auction, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, the carvers nish up their work and it is scrutinized by our expert judges. Awards will be made on the Sunday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. The weather in past years has been on our side so take the opportunity to bring friends and family to see the carvers in action. Over the past few months, I noticed a few new eating places have opened in Willow Point and the Willow Point Hall will be open on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday so plan on having lunch! Parking is limited, so think about parking a little further away and walk to the park to see the carvers. There are some great local businesses that will be open for your shopping pleasure. It has been a long year of planning this event and the Board of Directors spends countless hours lining things up for the com-munity to enjoy this event, and to keep it free of charge. The wood suppliers contribute carv-ing-quality logs at no charge, and any left-over logs are donated to schools and carvers to help them get better at their craft. John Ellis delivers the wood to the park and this community spirit keeps the event happening year after year. Along with provincial and
city grant money we rely on cash sponsors and donations to operate every year. Local hotels and motels supply free accommoda-tion for any carvers who come in from out of town, and various restaurants supply them with lunches and snacks for free. A number of equipment rental companies not only pro-vide equipment for free, but their employees often help set up the park and take it down at the end of the competition.
The Campbell River Shoreline Arts Society is non-pro t and we appreciate all of the or-ganizations who help put on the event. The City of Campbell River was especially helpful last year when it helped deliver the carvings, and the Campbell River Mirror always comes through with media releases, advertising, and our big Thank You after the event. We are very aware of just how many orga-nizations are fundraising and leaning on local businesses for support, so we particularly want to thank all of our sponsors and every-one who helps put on this event every year. This year, not only are many of our favou-rite carvers coming back, but we have one of the stars of the television show “Carver Kings” and a carver from the Netherlands. Did you know that some of our local carvers have attended international chainsaw carving competitions in places like Japan? Be sure to stop by the raf e tent, buy a ticket, and sign our guest book. If you have any questions, there will always be at least one board member on site. See you on Wednesday morning!

Log-istics Thanks to the gen-erosity of companies like Island Timber-lands, Western Forest Products, Interfor, and Timber West, up to 40 cedar and r logs are dropped off at Frank James Park at the end of June. The next day is spent distributing the logs throughout the park, and cutting or bucking some of the logs into sizes suitable for the Quick Carve Event. Winning carvers from last year get rst choice of the logs, followed by whoever registered as a participant rst. Logs are positioned by the carvers and braced, and if needed, loaned scaffolding is put in place. Actual carving begins at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24. When asked to explain what they do, carvers often say that they just remove whatever wood doesn’t belong, and that’s when a small army of volunteers moves into ac-tion. Last year more than 80 huge bags of sawdust (and a few truck-loads of wooden chunks) were re-
moved from the site. Many thanks to Paul Davis Systems and the army! After the carving competition, there are often logs left over, and we try to make sure that they are used responsibly. They may be donated to schools, donated to a carver who is doing a carving for public display, or used to educate rookie carvers. We try not to let them go to waste. We can use your help, though. We need more volunteers for the sawdust army, and we would be thrilled to nd a volunteer or three with a forklift licence or with a HIAB truck and licence! Please contact Don at 250-895-1691 if you can help.

The carvingthat started it all...On July 1 (Canada Day), 1996, well-known local artist Max Chick-ite stood working on an old stump that had been on the beach for many years. After 10 hours, a remarkable octopus appeared from the wood and "Octy" was born. Octy was a gift to the city from Max. A few days later, vandals cut off the Octopus' head and stole it, but it was found 11 days later on a logging road. Max repaired the charred, damaged head and returned it to Octy's body. The vandalism caused furor and is the reason the Driftwood-Carv-ing Competition was started. We felt that since a city could be so upset about the damage to one carving, it would surely appreciate a city lled with carvings. "Transformations on the Shore" began in 1997 and has been seen by thousands and thou-sands. Visitors and local residents love to watch the carvers at work and enjoy the carvings that are left along the Sea Walk and through-out the City of Campbell River. The Octopus has had other adven-tures as well, but he is still standing proudly (although much smaller) in his spot looking across Discovery Passage (on the 50th Parallel).

Welcome Carvers!
Adam Youngblut – Ladysmith, BC Originally from Ontario, Adam has always had a love for art and working with his hands. Trained as a horticulturist and also a certi ed arborist, he rst took an interest in carving while working for a conservation authority back east. In the fall of 2013, he and his family moved to Vancouver Island. This provided the chance to pursue his new interest. He has been carving ever since, inspired by the wonderful surroundings of the Islands.
Joel Palmer – Browns Flat, New Brunswick I have been full time carving since the summer of 2012 at which time I also entered into the rst ever Atlantic Canada Chainsaw Sculpting Championships and won rst place over my peers. The contest was a week long competition over which each day a carver is given ve hours to complete to his or her best a 6 - 8 foot log, over the period of a week, ve carvings are completed by every carver and on the sixth day one is chosen for completion - an additional ve hours. This was the competition that really set me off and challenged me in the art form. Since then I have excelled in what I do and currently in 2014 won the championship again. I love to compete and I know that if given the time alotted in the competition you are hosting, I will be able to produce a work like nothing I have ever done. I come into competitions like this to win but most of all have a good time with fellow carvers.
Roderick Brown – Terrace, BC Born and raised in Ontario, Roderick spent much of his time growing up in the forests and lakes surrounding his family's house and grandparents' cottage. Now living next to the mighty Skeena River, he draws inspiration from forest, rivers and culture so deeply rooted in this awesome place. Roderick is a self-taught wood sculptor who combines both realistic form and elaborate surface designs to his work.
Junior Henderson- Campbell River, BC Junior Henderson is the hereditary chief of the Wei Wai Kum Band of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation from Campbell River. Born in 1976, Junior inherited the Henderson family’s artistic talent from his grandfather Chief Sam Henderson, a distinguished Kwakwaka’wakw Master carver; his uncle, Bill Henderson, renowned carver; his uncle Mark Henderson, eminent traditional painter and his father Dan Henderson, artist, storyteller and cultural historian. Junior has been competing in the Transformations on the Shore competition for the past 15 years.

✁✁RYAN COOK If you watched “90210” or “The Hills” you may have noticed him. And if you watched “Saw Dogs”,
he’s the rookie who acciden-tally decapi-tated an eagle carving with his forklift. And if you watch “Carver Kings” you’ll know him as Ryan Cook, the carver with the mop of blonde curls who always wears a Saw Valley t-shirt. Ryan started out in acting, but got into chainsaw carving while playing a rookie carver on “Saw Dogs”. He began carving in earnest, and be-came a professional carver while here in Campbell River just a few years ago. Now he appears regular-ly on HGTV, and he recently made a statement on the reality show that he is tired of carving eagles and bears, so we are really looking forward to see-ing what he comes up with this year!

Our competitors range from novice to professional. We also have three professional carvers who don’t compete,
but who act as consultants to the other carvers. They may actually help carve pieces being created by novices, but usu-
ally they are restricted to pro-viding advice. They are also
responsible for helping ensure that the carvers are proceeding in a safe manner and taking care with their equipment.
Max Chickite is the founder of Transformations On The
Shore, and he is the carver of the octopus that is now our logo. Normally working on the main-
land, we are thrilled with however many days Max can spend
at our event.
Genn Greensides is a professional carver based in Saywardwho is known world-wide for his chainsaw creations.
Our third consultant is Jerry Strelioff, a master carver whois based here in Campbell River and whose works appear
all over the province.
The Shoreline Arts board realized last year that rather than have prominent local people act as our judges, we should take advantage of our expert consultants and get them to judge the carv-ings. Who better to decide on dif culty, design, ow, and creativity?

Come down on the Wednesday morning and watch the carvers get started. Some take forever to make that rst cut. And some just jump right in. Make a guess as to what each log is going to turn into! By Friday, the carvings are pretty much taking shape, so take a walk through the park and see if you guessed right. There’s raf e tickets for sale, souvenirs, and the popcorn lady will be there. On Saturday afternoon there is the Quick Carve event at 1 p.m. and the Live Auction of all the carvings. Sunday at 2 p.m., don't miss out on owning your own chainsaw artwork! If you are getting thirsty, visit the Willow Point Hall, just on the other side of the cottage. The Hall will be open from noon on Friday until about 6 p.m. and again on Saturday. On Sunday we’ll be open at 10 and close around 4. We will have a lemonade stand outside, offering iced tea, water, and pop. And inside, we will be selling hotdogs and burgers, and maybe a few surprise menu items. The strawberry shortcake was a hit last year, so plan on having a cuppa and something sweet. We have tables and chairs available for you to
take a break inside, and the shade is free! There will be craftspeople inside and outside the Hall so you can do a little shopping. The face painter will be there for the kids on Saturday and Sunday! Don’t like lining up for the porta-potties or for the washrooms at Tim Horton’s? C’mon down to the Hall and use our facilities. We even have a wheelchair friendly washroom! This is the 76th year that the Hall has been around and we are busy raising money for a new foundation and a new roof. Come and say goodbye to the old kitchen – demolition starts on July 6.

The Black Bear That Barely Survived Strathcona Park Lodge and Outdoor Education Centre, situated on the Gold River Highway west of Campbell River, has a unique wooden artifact that survived a horri c re in 1973, when the entire original lodge building burned down. The artifact is a life-sized carving of a black bear, that was created more than 40 years ago by one of the rst chainsaw carvers in British Columbia, Henry Stadlbau-er. Stadlbauer was staying at Strathcona Lodge in the early 1970s and Myrna Boulding, who founded the Lodge with her late husband Jim, recalls watching the artist working on his creation out in front of one of their workshops. According to an article written about the carver in The Chilliwack Progress in 1972, his preference was to work with red cedar, which
he said "has a very nice co-lour to it and stands up to bad weather". It is astonishing that the carving of the black bear he made for the Bouldings, that stood at the entrance of the Lodge, also withstood the blazing re. Although partially blackened, the bear is com-plete and today, the ne work-manship is
still apparent. Stadlbauer was born in Austria and came to Can-ada in 1953, rst living in Que-bec. He moved to Vancouver Island, then eventually set-
tled outside Chilliwack. Already a wood work-er who had used hand tools for many years, it seems that once he took up the chainsaw as a carving tool, he had found his métier. He rst tried it out in 1968, and liked the rough nish it gave to his pieces. He said
that he didn’t like to sand or polish his work, but would simply coat them in linseed oil and commented that "I like the feeling it has with ev-ery mark of the chainsaw left on". Entirely self-taught, he became very well known for his works and received orders for his carvings from all over the world. Stadlbauer passed away in 1991.

DECOMPRESSION & LASER CENTER
Do you suff er from a herniated disc, chronic or acute back pain, headaches, whiplash,
knee pain, carpel tunnel syndrome? Maybe you need help changing your lifestyle through exercise and dieti ng. Perhaps you need an ergonomic assessment to help functi on bett er at your workplace.
Dr. Janis Guthy, a Doctor of Chiropracti c with more than 34+ years experience, can help. And, in the process she wants to change the way you think about chiropractors. “Chiropractors treat more than just back strain,” she says. “The conditi ons we see range from sciati ca to headaches and sprained ankles to carpal tunnel syndrome, fi bromyalgia, arthriti s and more.
We also see a wide range of pati ents from children to the elderly. “You don’t need a medical referral to see Dr. Guthy, nor do you necessarily need to have pain symptoms,” she adds. “My clinic has always been proacti ve. People come in for a spinal check-up and preventati ve spinal care just to make sure they’re healthy.”
Identi fying and correcti ng minor imbalances early on, she says, can oft en prevent serious long-term conditi ons, including chronic pain. “Take your feet… they’re the foundati on of your body. If you’re walking improperly, it’s eventually going to aff ect your ankles, knees, hips, back and neck.” Custom-molded
foot orthoti cs, which Dr. Guthy can prescribe and make for you, can help to correct most gait problems contributi ng to other musculoskeletal pain.
If you have an ICBC claim, you can visit Dr. Guthy without a referral to receive treatment without any out-of pocket cost. The same applies to people with WorkSafe BC claims and RCMP or Veteran’s Aff airs coverage (BlueCross).
In additi on, Dr. Guthy off ers Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (DTS). “DTS relieves pressure on the spinal nerves through the use of a mechanical tracti on device applied through a highly sensiti ve computer,” explains Dr. Guthy. “It is completely painless and, as the name suggests, non-invasive.”
With spinal decompression’s precise, computer-controlled tension, the appropriate disc levels are gently and painlessly stretched to achieve a negati ve pressure within the disc. The negati ve pressure created in the nucleus pulposus allows compressed discs to be re-oxygenated, re-hydrated and re-nutrifi ed as they draw in moisture and nutrients from surrounding body ti ssues as well as promote retracti on of bulging or herniated discs.
While results may vary, Dr. Guthy notes that many Spinal Decompression pati ents including post-surgical pati ents and those with long-term chronic pain, are soon able to resume normal acti viti es.
For pati ents with sports or repeti ti ve strain injuries, tendoniti s, bursiti s, arthriti s and similar conditi ons, Dr. Guthy oft en employs the latest, non-invasive treatment of low-intensity laser therapy.
“Essenti ally, the laser initi ates a cascade of physiological reacti ons within the aff ected area,” she explains. “The result is restorati on of cell structure and functi on and it is highly eff ecti ve and has no known side eff ects.”
If you are suff ering from low back or neck pain, such as sciati ca, herniated, protruded, or degenerati ve disc, a s s o c i a t e d w i t h n e u r o l o g i c a l symptoms, you may benefi t from DTS and Laser therapy.
Dr. Guthy also has two other state of the art therapies. The
Exer-Rest is a bed on which the patient re c l i n e s w h i l e i t moves back and forth at a rate of 140 slides per minute.
The Exer-Rest is a patented, clinically trialed non-invasive device that works to improve circulation, i m p r o v e j o i n t mobility and reduce m u s c u l o s k e l e t a l pain and support overall health. The bed stimulates the
natural release of nitric oxide into the blood and helps pati ents feel more vibrant during the day and sleep bett er at night. Nitric oxide has potent anti -infl ammatory properti es; improves transmission of neural impulses; improves cogniti on, balance and learning, parti cularly in prior brain damage; is anti arteriosclerosis
(helping prevent hardening of the arteries); and, can limit the extent of heart and stroke damage. The therapy is equivalent to jogging without the stress to the heart and joints.
The Thermal Shiatsu Massage Bed helps increase c i rculat ion and reduce chronic pain. Far Infrared rays penetrate the surface of the body, allowing for the expansion of collagen ti ssues which then allow the mechanical jade heads to eff ecti vely push out all of the impuriti es that are stored in those ti ssues.
