A profit machinethat allows you to perform jobs that used to be impossible.

> We focus on end results. That’s why we’ve developed a tool that has changed the working conditions of a whole profes-sional group. Today, tiltrotators are regarded as standard in the Scandinavian construction and installation industry. Virtually all excavators and backhoe loaders in Scandinavia weighing less than 33.1 tons are equipped with a tiltrotator. Tiltrotators are available in various models, depending on the weight class of the base machine. The mountings and quick hitches can be cus-tomized to individual needs. What’s more, engcon offers a wide range of tools and accessories, which can also be customised.

> We give center stage to excava-tors and their skilled operators. We spotlight the operators and let them show off what they can really do – change their machine into a profitable, versatile tool that could previously only do a fraction of the things it does today. It’s all about feel-ing professional pride and satisfaction over a job performed to perfection.

We focus on thewhole picture. That’s why we’ve created a completesystem that makes your excavator more efficient.

> Now your excavator can become even more profitable. We’ve supplemented our wide range of tools and attach-ments for digging machines – including vibratory soil compactors, stone and scrap handling grabs and quick hitches, to mention only a few – with a new line of our own products collectively referred to as System engcon. They include deep excavation buckets, grading buckets and cable buckets optimized for use with a tiltrotator, as well as tarmac cutters and rippers – all compatible with exca-vators weighing 1.1–35.3 tons.

> All the tools in System engcon are compatible with engcon’s other products for excavators, and offer you an integrated solution for all the most common jobs. They’re made of high-quality steel and designed for maximum flexi-bility. Their wear surfaces are reinforced with Hardox steel to withstand extra tough strain. System engcon transforms the operator’s extended arm into a multi-purpose tool for fast, precise and versatile function.

Malcolm Davidson just dug a Y intersection and the tiltrotator allowed him to do the job without moving the

machine to a new position.

The Scottish Highlands are breathtakingly beautiful – and dreadfully damp. The latter has made Malcolm Davidson a successful entrepreneur. “You can see that drainage is essential”, he says as his heels sink into the soft, soggy, rain-soaked ground.

The surrounding area is stunningly beautiful, with hills that roll relentlessly to the mountains, which are already white with snow.

But Malcolm concentrates on the job. He just dug one hundred meters and is now toddling along in his Cat 308D to dig a trench to the main ditch. An assistant unrolls the drain hose and lays it in the newly dug ditches.

Malcolm has operated his business, Davidson Land Services, for six years and the fleet now consists of four excavators. The Cat that he’s driving is now two years old and shines as though

it were brand new. “I like to take good care of my machines”, he

says. He believes it’s important for the company to give a good impression and that the machines have a higher resale value if they are cared for properly.

Small machineryThe company specializes in drainage and land-scaping, and no excavator is larger than eight tons. According to Malcolm, many of the jobs he does couldn’t be done with larger machines. The engcon tiltrotator is also brilliant on the soggy ground.

“With the engcon tiltrotator I don’t have to move the machine as often while I’m working, which radically reduces damage to the land and we avoid lots of unnecessary restoration work.”

A fifth excavator is on the way to the company and with his experience of Cats equipped with engcon, Malcolm did not hesitate about which ac-cessories to include.

“The engcon tiltrotator is now just as obvious a choice as a bucket!”

department at the Sheffield railway divi-sion. “We’ve been using tilt rotators for over a year. They’ve proved an extremely reliable and popular addition to our machine ry stock in Sheffield,” he reports. “Once our customers see them in ac-tion, they ask for them again and again.”

Thanks to the tiltrotator’s ability to tilt and rotate at the same time, Frode can perform his work faster, with greater precision and without having to move the machine.

Frode works for Bröderna engströms entrepre-nadmaskiner aB in Örebro, Sweden. The firm started in 1956 and is run today by the second generation of engströms, brothers Jan-Olow and Per-eric. The company provides earth work services across a large part of Sweden and has about 140 machines, of which about half are tracked or wheeled excavators in all sizes.

“Just about all the excavators from five to 25 tons are equipped with tiltrotators from engcon. The operators can’t work efficiently without a tiltrotator”, says Hans Nilsson, Workshop manager at engströms.

One of the machines, a hardly year-old Liebherr

314 is driven by Frode Mathiesen. It’s equipped with the hydraulic quick hitch eC-oil and tiltrotator from engcon.

Effortless“Driving without a tiltrotator is unimaginable for me. I drive effortlessly, the tiltrotator is just like an extension of my thoughts. It’s so natural. I just think about how I want the work to proceed – and with the help of the tiltrotator it just happens, without me having to worry about it.”

Like today, where he’s digging for a district heating pipe installation in an industrial area. as quick as a flash, and without any problems, he

changes implements – from a tarmac cutter to a bucket – without even climbing out of the cab. and by tilting and rotating the bucket, Frode can quickly finish off the trench with precision and the minimum of shovel work.

“For me, a tiltrotator is standard equipment on an excavator. Today it seems a bit strange and old fashioned to drive without a tiltrotator.”

Workshop manager Hans Nilsson agrees.“With the tiltrotator we can do more in less time

and with fewer people. an excavator without a tiltrotator is quite simply not as profitable.”

Our customer’s demand– a tiltrotator is a must!Frode Mathiesen, an excavator operator for the last 15 years, can’t stop talking about the benefits of a tiltrotator.

But that’s not the only reason why he uses one.“It’s the customer’s demands that decide. Without a tiltrotator the guys working on

the ground would have to wear themselves out and everything would take much longer.”

Dennis Marais first spotted engcon’s tiltrotator at the Batimat expo in 2003, and was immediately convinced that tiltrotators would be the future in the excavation sector. He took his boss by one hand and the machine sales rep by the other, and showed them his discovery.

Cheaper than conversion His boss quickly realized that it was pointless trying to convince Dennis to buy an excavator with an offset boom instead. And the sales rep had no option but to find out about engcon’s product range. Both of them soon discovered that it was actually cheaper to fit a standard machine with engcon’s tiltrotator than convert it for an offset boom. What’s more, an unconverted machine would be much easier to sell at a later date, since machines with offset booms haven’t caught on in Europe yet. They decided to buy a spanking new Komatsu PC160.

Enthusiastic operator turned contractor Two years later, Dennis started his own business and took over the construc-tion and installation operations from his former boss, who now specializes exclusively in recycling. His boss kept Dennis’s old excavator, which had done over 5,000 hours, and he wouldn’t part with the tiltrotator or the engcon RF

and SK either – so Dennis had to buy new equipment. The old Komatsu exca-vator had been fitted with an engcon S60 hitch, and this hitch is now standard in Dennis’s company. He replaced the Komatsu with a used Daewoo 170. The used Daewoo had also done 5,000 hours, but was completely renovated and overhauled and looked like new.

Proportionally controlled tiltrotators “I bought a new tiltrotator because I planned to use it on the next machine”, says Dennis, who is busy creating a tidy slope which he could never have done with an ordinary excavator. During the break, Dennis’s colleague Stefan arrives with his Komatsu PW140. His machine is also equiped with engcon. Just a few days ago, Dennis picked up his brand new Daewoo after it had been converted by engcon’s service staff. Stefan already uses a proportionally controlled engcon tiltrotator, and now it’s Dennis’s turn to work with the best engcon has to offer. The two French colleagues assure us that their services are in high demand. They explain that this is because their equipment makes everyone else’s work on the construction site so much easier. Dennis Marais could never have created such a tidy slope with an ordinary excavator. With his engcon tiltrotator, he can do everything from finishing work to rugged jobs.

“My excavator is actually a bit too big, but small machines aren’t my thing. and with an engcon tiltrotator, I can do everything from finishing work to rugged operations – a big advantage when you don’t have a big machine fleet”, says Dennis Marais, a French contractor in Normandy.

engcon’s vibratory soil

compactor best in test!

In the test, a Volvo EW140B and the engcon vibratory soil com-pactor PP600 were used. The test was based on a 100 cm bed of loose recycling material, equivalent to 0–80 crushed gravel.

The Dr. H. Seeliger company has a great deal of experience of similar tests, and is clearly impressed by the engcon vibratory soil compactor which proved to be the absolute best of the ones tested in its class.

The degree of compaction was remarkable, achieving 103.2 % for two passes and 101.6 % for six passes.

“An outstanding result”, says Dr. H. Seeliger, who had no hesita-tion in declaring the engcon vibratory soil compactor the winner in competition with compacting wheels as well as rival brands. He also states that comparisons with other brands showed great variations.

“We have compared Allu Kenguru and one of the compacting wheels on the market, and they do not compact the ground as well as the engcon vibratory soil compactor”, says Dr. H Seeliger.

engcon’s vibratory soil compactor fitted to an excavator is an incredibly effective way to compact soil. This was recently demonstrated in a completely impartial test carried out by the geologist, Dr. H. Seeliger, in autumn 2006 at a location on the outskirts of the german town of Kassel.

When engcon’s reporter began his journey to Trondheim from our main office and factory in Strömsund at 4:30 a.m. on a cold March morning, the sky was blue and the temperature was -22 °C.

After passing Åre, the sky clouded over. Near the Swedish-Norwegian border, a snow storm broke out with driving snow and zero visibility.

As I rolled down the hills towards Stjördal, the weather cleared. The temperature was minus two degrees, and brilliant sunshine greeted me in Trondheim, where there was virtually no snow.

The first warm smile of the day came from Arve Öksnäs, an after market sales rep at the Komatsu importer Hesselberg, who was there to help me find the contractors I was to visit during the day.

Towards central TrondheimAfter a quick coffee break, we visited a building site near central Trondheim, where we had an appoint-

ment with Hans Skogaas. Hans operates a Zaxis 200 LC fitted with a proportionally controlled EC20 and an engcon SK stone and scrap handling grab for his employer, Ole P Bakken.

Ole P Bakken is a 40 year-old company with its own gravel pit. One of its major clients is the local waterworks.

Ole P Bakken has five employees, and its machine ry stock also includes an engcon-equipped Hitachi ZX 225, two trucks and two wheel loaders.

Ease and precisionalthough Hans is not using his machine and the site today, he swings up into the cab to show how pleased he is with his well-equipped machine.

Hans starts picking up large blocks of stone from a pile beside the building area. He quickly places the stones in a row, deftly maneuvering his tiltro-tator and grab with gentle, precise movements.

“I’m absolutely delighted with this combination. It’s unbeatable in many situations. The propor-tional control system means I can operate with precision”, says Hans, who mainly works with ex-cavators in the company.

I ask if engcon’s products come in handy in other situations.

“all the time! There’s actually no job I would do without a tiltrotator. They’re fabulous for every-thing”, says Hans, who has worked for the com-pany for four years.

The engcon S60 is the first quick hitch to be approved for use in Network Rail, the British rail administration.

“We have always known that our quick hitches are safe – but now we have also got it on paper”, says Caroline Sigge, head of engcon’s UK office.

In the UK, rail excavators equipped with grabs, buckets are often used to perform work along railway banks and also on the track. However, following a spate of four fatal accidents due to semi-automatic quick hitches, Network Rail had to look into the use of the equipment to increase safety.

New agreementNetwork Rail has been very active in meetings with the quick hitch manufac-turers to go through and discuss the issues and concerns about the quick hitches being used in the rail industry. This has resulted in that european manufacturers voluntarily have agreed to stop the supply of semi-automatic quick hitches into the British market. This agreement came into effect on the 1st of October, 2008. It has even been said that some contractors has banned the use of semi-automatic hitches on their sites. This results in that in the future, only manual or fully automatic hitches will be available. “The semi-automatic hitches are based on a different principle than the

engcon S60 hitches. They have a safety pin that’s fastened manually. If this isn’t done properly or perhaps not done at all, the accident risk increases”, explains Caroline Sigge.

engcon has taken it furtherengcon has taken this even further and appointed Lloyds British Testing to certify the engcon S60 quick hitch with a safe work load of 11,04 tons. The test load was SWL + 100 %, i.e. 22,08 tons.

“The S60 is SWL-marked for up to 11,04 tons, which is significantly more than the machines are even capable of lifting”, says Daniel Sjödin at engcon Holding, who has previously worked for engcon in the UK for five years.

This shows that engcon has taken it further to ensure that they have got the safest and most efficient quick hitch on the market.

In addition to the test of the S60 quick hitch, engcon have also taken the eC15 Tiltrotator to Lloyds British Testing for a certification. Like the S60, the eC15 has a SWL of 11,04 tons.

Jakob Christensen, owner of the company JC entreprenör-service, now really appreciates the benefits of a tiltrotator.

“It only took us a short time to realize what a flexible machine we had”, says Jakob, who is currently driving his first machine fitted with a tiltrotator.

The machine, a new Takeuchi TB1140, has currently been hired for a hous ing development in Balerup. When we visited Jakob, he was just about to create a pile of fine gravel which must not be mixed with the dirt from the ground.

The use of a tiltrotator means that Jakob can avoid moving the machine repeatedly, since he can dig both away from, towards and to the side of the machine.

“Now that we’ve seen the benefits of using a tiltrotator, we will definitely have more”, says Jakob, who owns a further four exca-vators.

“It’s definitely more

engcons for us!”

The image is symbolic: in one corner of the job site is an unused shovel on which georg grabmeier has hung his hat.

“Since we bought a tiltrotator we no longer need anyone on the job site who works with a shovel. That’s an advan-tage you just can’t ignore”, he says.

The old saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” doesn’t apply to Georg Grabmeier. On the contrary. For years he worked as an assembler at BMW, but at age 55 he decided to switch gears and do something completely different for the rest of his working life.

“I wanted to become an excavator contractor, I was absolutely sure about it”, says Georg, who ad-mits that his wife Isolde was not totally thrilled about the decision.

But that’s what happened and even Isolde soon realized that it was the right decision. In his new job, in the excavator, Georg found new energy and job satisfaction.

That was 1999. The operation grew and the company now has two employees and machinery that includes an excavator and a dumper.

But that was not the last successful choice George made in his working life. At Demopark in 2009 he saw a tiltrotator from engcon for the first time.

“I immediately understood the advantages and opportunities of the tiltrotator.”

No doubtsWhen Georg bought a new excavator later that same year, the vendor recommended a tilt coupler – but Georg already knew what he wanted.

“There was no doubt that I would have a tilt-rotator from engcon. With the work I do – cable trenching, planing, landscaping, etc. – the tiltrotator simplifies my job considerably.”

It was particularly noticeable that day when Georg Grabmeier was putting up a wall and leveling the ground at a newly renovated house just outside Munich. Georg dug with great precision from the outer edge of the street to make room for the new wall. No manual labor is needed and it’s remarkable how easily and precisely the work is carried out.

And Georg Grabmeier is not alone in his praise of the tiltrotator.

“Customers see the advantages of the tiltrotator, too,” says Georg, who knows how the next excavator will be equipped. “Absolutely, it will have a tiltrotator right from the start.”

On the right track in TurkeyInterest in engcon’s tiltrotators has exploded throughout europe. Now Turkish en-trepreneurs are also discovering this product that is already considered standard in many other countries. It’s to do with time, money – and safety.

The Turkish company Yapiray Railway Construction Systems Industry & Comm. Inc. was started in 1998 as an expert company focusing on railway transport systems in Turkey and abroad. Yapiray is a subsidiary of YaPI MeRKeZI, one of Turkey’s largest construction groups. Yapiray currently has 59 employees and is Turkey’s leader in railway systems.

The company has just bought an engcon eC20 tiltrotator for one of its ex-cavators to make its railway construction processes more efficient.

“Combined with our sleeper layer, this is exactly the equipment that Yapiray lacked”, says anders Rosenqvist, CeO and owner of Rosenqvist Rail aB in Hudiksvall, which supplied the products.

“Yapiray contacted us a while back requesting solutions for various special-

ised applications in their construction processes. They are highly satisfied and have already shown interest in continued collaboration.”

according to anders, engcon’s tilt rotator combined with Yapiray’s own railway equipment provides a complete solution that significantly rationalizes railway contractors’ work.Tiltrotators are already regarded as standard in many parts of europe. The benefits speak for themselves; anyone who has tried a tiltrotator never wants to do without it again.

“It’s not just about time and money. The tiltrotator also significantly im-proves safety by minimizing many manual tasks”, says anders.

High level powerPower line poles are huge: 60 feet tall, weighing over one ton each. Yet it looks so easy when Jonas Nilsson raises them, one by one, and places them in 6 feet deep holes. “With the tiltrotator, I don’t have to plan how to stand to grab them and then raise them.”

Page 19: SPECIAL GROUP - Mählersmahlers.se/download/18.7e8804c713b8fc7aa6b1c36/... · And the sales rep had no option but to find out about engcon’s product range. Both of them soon discovered

The utility company Jämtkraft is building the fifty-kilometer long power line from the wind farm in Ollebacken to the power plant in Kattstrupeforsen. The new 130-kilovolt line will consist of a total of 267 stands with two or three poles each.

Hjorts Entreprenad & Mekaniska AB is the contractor and 28-year old Jonas Nilsson is the operator of a brand new Hitachi Zaxis 225, equipped with an engcon EC30 tiltrotator, Palfinger PK29002 crane and Grab John bucket.

“It’s a good job with freedom and I get to be outside all day”, says Jonas. He worked as a machine operator when he did his military service, but

then he ended up in an office job in Östersund. “It wasn’t any fun at all”, he says. So he took a course for machine operators – and now he’s sitting here

and loves his job.

Smooth and preciseWorking and being responsible for a machine that can both dig and raise poles is not the easiest job around. But Jonas maneuvers both the ma-chine and the crane with smooth and precise movements. Being too fast in this job can have dire consequences, since the two line mechanics Stefan Svensson and David Antonsson are always nearby.

“If any of us loses our concentration or makes a mistake it can actually have dire consequences”, says Jonas.

After Jonas digs down the two poles, it’s time to lift the crossbeam on which the power line will be hung. Stefan and David prepare by mounting the insulators and then Jonas lifts the beam into place with the greatest precision. With quick steps Stefan and David climb up to a height of 18 yards and then bolt the beam to the poles.

At first, they only managed one stand per day. Now they’ve come up to speed and can finish 1.5 to 2 stands a day. And the tiltrotator is invaluable on the job.

“With the tiltrotator, I don’t have to plan how to stand when I grab the poles and then raise them. The tiltrotator also makes it much easier and faster to fill in around the poles.”

It’s good thing that it’s so fast. Hjorts Entreprenad, which specializes in line construction work and cabling, is busy thanks to the Swedish initia-tive to secure the supply of electricity in the country. So new challenges await Jonas.

Cristian has just dug up, adjusted and refilled the ground around a well and stopcock hidden in a nar-row alley in central Vasa. engcon’s camera captures Cristian filling in the ground with high precision and minimum material waste. This would be impossible without a tiltrotator.

Cristian, a construction contractor, has been using excavators for twelve years. He has been using tiltrotators for the past four years. “I can’t imag ine excavating without a tiltrotator now. Most

importantly, our clients would never allow me onto a worksite without one!” Aarno Pälvimaa, who purchases contracting services for the City of Vasa, confirms that tilt rotators are now regarded as standard. Renting machines without them would be taking a big step backwards.

“In the past, a whole team of extra workers had to walk behind the excavator making adjustments with their spades. This was costly and really com-pletely unnecessary, since we also had to pay for

the excavator to stand idle while the men shovelled gravel round the bucket”, explains Aarno Pälvimaa. Another advantage observed by the City of Vasa is that traffic safety has increased since tiltrota-tors started being used. “Now excavators can work from the same place along the road, whereas in the past the machine had to be moved each time a new operation was required. This has signific antly improved traffic safety”, reports Pälvimaa.

Centimeter precision:

Cristian Saarela in the Finnish city of Vasa can achieve optimum precision. He can work behind house walls, in narrow passages and at seemingly impossible angles with his eW160B fitted with an engcon eC20 with an integrated grab and engcon RF20 hitch.

“It’s important to have the right buckets”, says Kevin, who realized the advantages of engcon’s tools and attachments, which are adapted for optimal compatibility with the tiltrotator.

“With engcon’s planing bucket I can take maximum advantage of the tiltrotator. It’s very convenient, easy to dig with and well de-signed for most types of work”, he says.

In addition to his engcon equipment, Kevin always brings along another faithful companion.

It’s Murphy, a calm Potterdale terrier who is happiest next to her human on the floor of the excavator.

“She follows me wherever I go and we really understand each other when it comes to ma-chines”, says Kevin with a twinkle in his eye.

About KWR Plantestablished nearly 20 years ago by Kevin Rus-sell this east Midlands based business has gone from strength to strength through con-tinued re-investment into the core business.

The team now totals 6 full time operators, paired up with their specialist equipment for the task they are a real force to be reckoned with.

To show you how good they are Kevin represented the UK in the Caterpillar world championships in Malaga, where the team finished a credible 4th out of 35 teams!

as always Kevin and the team are always looking for the next innovative piece of equip-ment to constantly improve their performance, this means that the jobs can be completed in the minimum of fuss in the most cost effective way.

after using engcon’s tiltrotator for one year, Volker eckert wants more. “I couldn’t imagine using an excavator without a tiltrotator now”, he says, referring to the tight site he’s working on, an excavation job around an apartment building in Osterburken.

Volker eckert runs the company with 14 employ-ees that his father, Paul eckert, started in 1958. There’s no shortage of small service jobs for his Takeuchi 153 – equipped with engcon tiltrotator eC10, stone and scrap handling grab, tarmac cutter, pallet fork and a variety of buckets.

For this particular excavation job, Volker decided to test engcon’s soil compactor.

“ I knew I would be even more efficient if I could use the excavator to compact the soil.”

Quick paybackaccording to Volker, the more he can do with the excavator, the better his profitability. and he finds that the tiltrotator in particular is indispensable.

“It does everything faster and more efficiently. But the tiltrotator performs at its best in back-fill work, it’s absolutely outstanding.”

Volker points to the current job as an example. He doesn’t have to keep moving the excavator; he can place the backfill material with the bucket in any position at all and then easily place the material exactly where it’s needed.

“Before you had to ‘toss’ the material with the excavator and then shove it where it belonged. Then, a man with a shovel put the material in place”, says Volker, noting that he even saves money on manual labor, which is no longer needed.

An excavator without a tiltrotator is incon-ceivable for Volker
