Proposal of a Special Issue for International Journal of Project Management Special theme on: "Advances in Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Construction Projects" 1. Introduction The competitive global business environment calls for the deployment of various levels of strategies and technologies on enterprise and their projects. The successful delivery of large-scale construction projects require significant planning, design, construction and project management efforts. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an enabling technology and the processes which can significantly transform the project delivery process and add value across the whole project lifecycle. Nowadays, the technology side of BIM is becoming more popular and mature in different sectors of the construction industry. However, the proper understanding of change in business processes and practices that come with BIM implemen- tation, along with the project management aspect of BIM, is still a young area of academic inquiry. Without the proper studies of the associated project manage- ment processes and managerial side of BIM, the successful adoption of BIM on projects, particularly on large-scale and capital intensive projects is going to be extremely challenging. In this regard, this special issue focusing on project management of large-scale construction projects in relation to BIM is timely and critical to coordinate and manage overall project information, processes and aligning project and organizational strategies for improved project performance throughout the entire lifecycle of a project. This softarea of BIM research is rather new but has a huge potential to impact on the overall management of projects. Even a small improvement in any of the project management processes can make a huge difference on overall cost, time, quality and sustainability of projects. This special theme on International Journal of Project Management (IJPM) is aimed at addressing the above- mentioned agenda by incorporating BIM in the management of large-scale projects. We invite scholars to submit innovative and thoughtful research on BIM case studies, real world organizational and project issues and best practices that have significant contributions on theory building or the practice of project management on large scale projects/megaprojects. 2. Scope Examples of a range of BIM-related topics for this special issue include, but are not limited to: Project management Contractual arrangements Information management and integrations Strategic management Communication and coordination Innovative procurement methods based on BIM Decision making Dispute resolution Productivity studies Performance measurement and effectiveness Relationship management Sustainability Lifecycle management Culture and union studies Modular construction Global information sharing in international construction Construction Innovation 3.
