Will Elijah the prophet reappear on the earth before Christ’s second coming? Malachi 4:5-6 is a dual prophecy, having two fulfillments. “Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet. Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse (utter destruction).” This prophecy was first fulfilled by John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Christ’s first coming. In Luke 1:17 it says “ And he (John the Baptist) shall go before Him (Christ) in the spirit and power of Elias (Elijah), to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” This prophecy does not mean that Elijah will be resurrected before Christ returns. Rather it is speaking of someone who has the same spiri-tual calling and office as the prophet Elijah, the man of God who witnessed with power to a re-bellious nation and commanded them to obey God. (“If the Lord be God follow him.” ( I Kings 18:21) When John the Baptist began preaching re-pentance and baptizing in the wilderness, the priests and Levites came from Jerusalem to ask if he was the prophesied “Elijah”. John an-swered no. (John 1:19-23) “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.” (verse 23) But Jesus said that John was indeed the prophesied “ Elijah” of that day. (Matt 11:7-15)

“So they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send My messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you. Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.” John was the “Elijah” who came to restore all things in preparation for Christ’s ministry. (Matt 17:10-13) But the second stage of this prophecy was to be fulfilled in the last days, “before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” This is speaking of our time now. (Matt 17:10-13) “And His disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes day that Elijah must come first? Then Jesus answered and said to them, Elijah truly is coming first and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise suffer at their hands. Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.” At the close of this present evil age, an-

It is very smart these days to be frugal, health-conscious and nature oriented. We in the Church of God have been taught for years to be good stewards of our resources. This article is to update you on how we have an impact on our environment and the need to keep learning of ways to con-serve. Each of us is a consumer of the air, water and soil. We can be very wasteful without realizing how much we use and throw away each day. It’s like having a checking account that without regular monitoring becomes over-drawn and the checks bounce. It has only been recently that our government and the private sector have awakened to the reality that our bank ac-count has been overdrawn. There is good news however, with thoughtful planning and some lifestyle changes we can make a difference without much sacrifice.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle We need to know what prod-ucts we use that can be recy-cled. Aluminum and steel cans, cardboard, glass, newspapers and plastic bottles are all recyclable. Steel and aluminum that is recy-cled goes into the building of skyscrapers, automobiles and ships. Plastic bottles can be re-cycled into toys, baskets and even clothing. We can reduce the amount of trash we generate by being careful shoppers. As a con-sumer we have purchasing power and buying products that are reusable or concentrated will reduce the amount of wrappers and containers that ends up in the local landfill. Manufacturers take note of what we buy and will produce more Earth friendly products. Here are some helpful tips that I have received from my friends who are eco- conscious:

Don’t buy more than you need. You will end up wast-ing more. Reduce the amount of pa-per you use. Send emails whenever possible. Buy products that have been recycled. Practice composting of food scraps and yard trim-mings. Use your junk mail and newspapers for wood stoves and fireplace.

Donate clothing and other items not needed to a local charity. Place recycling bins throughout your home and workspace to make it

more convenient for people.

Recycle building materi-als from construction and remodeling. They can go into other buildings or be donated to Habitat for Hu-manity. Take shorter showers. Walk or ride a bicycle whenever you can. Plant more trees (they give us oxygen). Take the ashes from your stove or fireplace and spread over the garden (potash is good for the soil).

It is important that we learn what our community has to of-fer in the way of recycling. We can let our com-munity leaders know that we do need to do this for us now and future generations. This is also another way of getting to know your neighbors young and old. As I am completing this arti-cle I look around at my own space and wonder: “Why do I keep so much stuff?” You will have to ex-cuse me while I go clean up and recycle. By JoAnn Shappard

other “Elijah” is to thunder a warning message to disobedient Israel and prepare a people for Christ’s glorious return to reestablish God’s government on this earth. Before the end of this present evil world the Gospel of the King-dom must be preached as a witness to the en-tire world. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” (Matt 24:14) God has in these last days opened the door of the mass media for His Gospel mes-sage to go out to the world. “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have

4

Continued from page 2 not denied My Name.” (Rev 3:8) God says that only those who have “ears to hear”, who are tuned in to God’s truth would be able to recognize the second “Elijah”, John the Baptist. “And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matt 11:14-15) Likewise, only those who are obedient to God and led by His Spirit will rec-ognize the end-time “Elijah”. “Because you have kept My command to per-severe, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.” (Rev. 3:10) God will protect those who do, and who are heeding the warning message, when the world erupts in the flames of the Great Tribulation.

from my grandma’s house. After graduating

from there I attended high school in Hutsonville,

I worked on the farm for a while. Then I

worked on the State of Illinois’ roads patching

pavement and such things. After that I went to

work on the New York Central Railroad (NYC)

as an operator and agent. The NCY merged

with the Pennsylvania Railroad (Penn Central).

The government took over and 13 railroads were

merged together and renamed Consolidated

Railroad (Con Rail).

I never married. I retired from the railroad Oc-

I own a little farm 10 miles west/northwest of

West Union, on which I rent out the acreage. I

take care of the place where I live.

I began reading the Plain Truth Magazine and

some of Mr. Armstrong’s books. I also listened

to him and Garner Ted on the radio. I have been

A young girl stood by the shore clutching a small bundle in her arms. Miriam, the young girl, lowered her precious bundle into a basket and set it in the water. She then watched as her little brother floated away unaware of the dan-gers ahead. She prayed he would be safe and not found by Pharaoh, who had decreed that, all baby boys were to be killed.

Pharaoh’s daughter, while taking a bath in the Nile River, noticed the basket and sent her servant to get it. When she opened it, she saw the little boy. The baby’s sister, who was watching from a distance, came forward and asked Pharaoh’s daughter if she needed help taking care of the baby. Pharaoh’s daughter told Miriam to find someone to nurse the child. Miriam ran quickly to tell her mother that her brother would live. Pharaoh’s daughter named him Moses.

Many years later Moses went out to where the Israelites were and watched them work. He saw an Egyptian beating one of the slaves. When no one was looking, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day Moses went out and saw two Israelites fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the

Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid be-

cause he knew they had seen him kill the Egyptian. Pharaoh also found out that Moses had killed an Egyptian. Moses found out that he was really a Hebrew. He knew he could not live as a Prince when he was an Israelite, but he chose to live God’s way anyway. Moses ran away to live in Midian where he met his wife, Zip-porah. Her father was a priest named Jethro.

Many years passed, and the Israel-ites were still slaves in Egypt. They worked long and hard to make bricks for Pharaoh’s buildings. God saw how the Egyptians treated the Israelites and called on Moses to lead them out of slavery. While watching Jethro’s sheep near Mount Sinai, God appeared to Moses in flames of fire within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn. God said to Moses, “Do not come any closer. Take off your shoes, for you are standing on holy ground.” Then God told Moses to go and tell Pharaoh to free the Israelites. Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, “The Lord did not appear to you.” God commanded Moses to throw down his shepherd’s rod and it became a snake. When Moses grabbed it by the tail, it be-came a shepherd’s rod again. God also performed another miracle by causing Moses’ hand to become leprous and be healed again. Moses could use these miracles to show that God had called him to go before the Pharaoh, King of Egypt. Moses still did not want to face the King of Egypt. He told God that he could not speak well, so God agreed to let Moses’ brother, Aaron, go with him and talk to Pharaoh for him.

Moses and Aaron went to see Pharaoh. They told Pharaoh that the God of Israel said, “Let my people go.” Phar-aoh said, “Who is God that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know God

and I will not let Israel go.” Pharaoh was now very angry. He made the Israelites work even harder than before.

Later, Moses and Aaron returned and spoke to Pharaoh again. This time God per-formed miracles before Pharaoh by turning the shepherd’s rod into a snake, but Pharaoh would still not let the Israelites go, so now God sent ten terrible plagues to Pharaoh and the Egyptians.

Circle the ten plagues in the word

search below. You can use your Bible to find the answers in Exodus 8-12

During each of these plagues, Phar-

aoh would say that the Israelites could leave, but when God would remove the plague, Pharaoh would change his mind and say that the Israelites could not leave. Finally, after the death of all the firstborn in Egypt, Phar-aoh let the Israelites go, but soon after the Israelites were freed, the Egyptians changed their minds and began to chase after them.

Which sea did the Israelites have to cross?

The Egyptians were coming toward the Israelites ready to kill them. God parted the Sea and dried the ground so that the Is-raelites could pass through safely. When the Egyptians tried to come after them, God closed the Sea and the Egyptians were killed. God protected the Israelites from the Egyptians and guided them by a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. When the cloud moved, the Israelites moved and when the cloud stopped, the Israelites stopped.

When the Israelites reached Mt Sinai, God told Moses to have all of the Israelites meet at the bottom, where He would appear. On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning. A great heavy cloud came over Mount Sinai, and Moses brought the people out of the camp to see God. Moses spoke and God answered with fire and thunder. God told Moses to leave the people and go to the top of the mountain where God gave him the Ten Command-ments.

A Tea was given by the Terre Haute congregation after services on August 15. A light lunch was served followed by two interactive seminars, one for the men and one for the women. Nelson Arnold hosted the seminar for the men, presenting the topic “Are We Living In the Last Days?” Julie Shew hosted a seminar for the women titled “Becoming a Woman After God’s Heart”. Both topics were well received and an enjoyable time was had by all. The congregation hopes to host another Tea in the future.

The next Men’s and Women’s Studies will be in the early Spring. The topic will be “How

to Cope After loosing a Loved One: A Positive Spin on Sadness” The men's seminar and

discussion will be given by Rick Whitt. The women's will be given by Caroline Whitt.

Germs are everywhere, but less than 1% are considered harmful. Germs change sizes and shapes to penetrate your body. There are bacterial, viral, fungal and other infections disease carrying germs. Germs can live 2 hours or longer on tables, doorknobs, and desks and on many other surfaces. Scary isn’t it? But your body does a good job protecting you. Here are a few simple habits that can go a long way to help your body’s fight against germs:

1. Wash your hands before preparing food, eating and after sneezing or coughing and using the bathroom.

2. Use bleach in your laundry to kill germs. 3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, especially after being in a public place. Use

hand sanitizer after leaving any store or restaurant. 4. Disinfect objects and surfaces in your home such as counter tops and children’s toys. 5. Get plenty of exercise and plenty of sleep. 6. Eat vegetables and fruits and also drink plenty of water and fluids to flush your system. 7. Last of all, stay home when you are sick. I hope this will help you to maintain good health this winter.
