Pat Lipper CHUM Volunteer How lucky we are to have Pat Lipper as a part of our “army of volunteers” at CHUM. Pat has been attending College Hill since the 1980’s and her preferred service is the 8:30am Service. Pat is currently working on the WSU Event Staff and she held jobs as a hospital escort and a postal pre-sorter in her earlier working career. Pat volunteers at CHUM with the food pantry, in the office on Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings, as a greeter and with the Prairie Land Food distribution. She also helps with meals for funerals and weddings. Pat is a busy lady! She also works at the voting polls during election time - a very long day! What you might not know about Pat is that as a little girl she was neighbors with Faye and Kathryne Schmoker (also long time members of CHUM). Thanks Pat for all you do!

Library Collecting Books for Children in Paraguay Wichita Public Library, Trees for Life, and Kansas Paraguay Partners are joining hands on a project that will run August 19 - September 30. They are asking for new, or lightly used, Spanish-language books for the children of San Marcos Elementary School in Luque, Paraguay. These can be dropped off at any Wichita Public Library location. See our community bulletin board for more details on this project. Financial donations can be made at www.treesforlife.org.

Doormat Orders Being Taken Now As the Mission team begins to plan their trip to Cookson Hills with all the Christmas In July donations, they are also planning to return home with all doormats we order. These popular mats are made by recycling used car tires into doormats which gives jobs to recovering addicts and former offenders. The orders are needed by Sunday, September 7 and will be ready for pickup Monday, October 13. You have 3 sizes to choose from and a wide variety of bead colors too. The costs are $10, $15, or $20. Stop by the church office for an order form.

New Member Gathering Thinking about joining the College Hill Family? We’d love to have you! There will be an informal gathering on Wednesday, September 3rd, at 6:30pm. We will gather in room 105 - across from the elevator near Fellowship Hall. This is a great opportunity to visit with Pastor Kent, to ask questions, or learn more about College Hill.

November “Bus Trip” Crawl On Saturday, November 8, we will be traveling by

bus to Ellsworth, KS to eat at Pretty Boy Floyds. Take time now to mark your calendars for the late afternoon & evening of November 8. More details and sign up for this event will be given later so watch the newsletter!

Our Sympathy to … Tony Canidy & family, in the death of his mother, Corean Canidy. Our sympathy also goes to Bill VanSteinberg, Jr. and family, in the death of Bill’s father, Bill VanSteinberg, Sr. Sympathy to Doris and Neil Lusk in the death of Doris’s sister, Mildred Hupp.

Baptism At the 9:40am service, we celebrated the baptism of

Nadya Ellen Rusanowsky. Her parents are Nancy & Alex Rusanowsky. Her sisters are Gracie and Abigail.

Spelling Bee Congratulations to Joan Buenten for taking second place in the Greater Wichita Senior Spelling Bee this past week. Other participants from CHUM included Phil Coleman and Mike Owings. Madgie Hinners, Marilyn McKee, and Neil & Doris Lusk were involved behind the scenes. After the initial 50 words were given for the handwritten spelling test, a total of 16 people were selected to play in the oral portion of the contest. Joan Buenten and Phil Coleman were two of the sixteen. Joan came in second and Phil did an awesome job. Good seeing Chum so well represented. The spelling bee was sponsored by Life Ventures. Holiday Open House Tour We are looking for volunteers to open their homes this year for our Annual Holiday Home Tour. We would love to have 4 homes never before on the tour. The date selected for this fun event would be Sunday, December 7th. Please contact the church office if you are willing to participate. All money raised in ticket sales goes towards the purchase of CHUM TV ads.

Animate to begin Monday, August 15, at 6:30pm. This is a young adult Bible study and Fellowship group. Child care will be provided at the church while you gather at the home of Brian Sutton @ 551 N. Terrace Dr. Contact Brian Sutton at the church with any questions.

AGAPE, Rm. 201 - We had interesting conversations after taking a quiz on what

type of money handling traits we have. Thank you Papineau's for hosting a fun

pool party on a HOT Sunday afternoon. Happy birthday to Bill this

week. Hahn's treat next.

ARCHITECTS, Rm. B1 – LaVerne handled the business part of class in Lilaha’s

absence. Elmer Keech’s birthday was today (8/17) so we sang him “Happy

Birthday”. We’ve heard from Jacque Herzet and she was hoping to get back

before too long. We miss her! Neil visited Enid and she is doing better and

hopes to get back home soon. Mission Sunday is 8/24 since we won’t have class

on 8/31. We will meet at CHUM on Sept. 4 at 8:30am to prepare lunches for

240 people at the Open Door Homeless Shelter. Don’t forget! Neil handled the

TV for the movie “Heaven Is For Real” and we have 2 more segments to view.

This is so meaningful and our discussion was great. Continued prayers for ill and

shut ins.

BUILDERS, Rm. 305 - Continuing The Roma of Europe so be sure to read

Chapter 3, page 34, for Sunday. Joan has treats Sunday. Keep Royce Morgan in

your prayers as he is fighting infection as well as Charlie M.

COMMUNICATORS, Rm. 301 - Calendar - Meet and Greet on Sept. 21.

Prayers for Vicki's dad and friends of Caywood’s.

CONTEMPORARY STUDIES, Rm. B5/7 - Sunny Sunday brought together

twenty-four! Concerns for her father, Joe Sims, were shared by Vicki Hitchcock.

Happy Birthdays this week for Floyd Hansen, Barry Gaston, and Bill Lusk.

Next semester's book to be taught by Keith Williamson, Eternal Life: A New

Vision, by John Shelby Spong, is available for $12 in the church office or in

class. After viewing Roundtable on "What is the Kingdom of God?" by John

Dominic Crossan and Craig Evans, tabletalk focused on if the kingdom of God

ideas are important and what do they have to do with the way we live. Sunday,

"Was Jesus Raised From the Dead?"

DOUBLE CIRCLE, Rm. B4 - Class opened with everyone expressing their

everyday feelings. Moe read a card from Brian & Mike thanking us for the

indoor picnic we held in the Parlor. Betty had no illness to report. John B. had a

great 101st birthday - good living John! Tom’s daughter, Sheila, gave devotions.

She is taking care of Tom (Ha Ha!) while Candy takes a few days of vacation.

Brian gave a wonderful lesson from Corinthians. It was very good, thanks Brian!

There were 12 in attendance.

TRAVELING COMPANIONS, Chapel @ 11:00am - Join us for discussion on

spiritual development and personal growth.

VICEROY, Rm. B3 - Marcus Borg said about his conventional Christianity, "My big question was where would I spend eternity?" Then in college the notion of one "right" way seeing things disappeared. In his home town both religion and politics were divided, one on the right side of the tracks and one on the wrong. It was in college he became convinced that what is meant by "God" is real and sometimes known. We discussed where we fit in these concepts.

KIDDO PLAYTIME W e d n e s d a y s ( 9/3/14 through 5/27/15) 9:30am - 1:00pm Kiddo Playtime is a ministry with our youngest children. Our goal is to provide a safe and enriching environment for young children (18 months to 4 years old) to play once a week. It is also a wonderful opportunity for caregivers to take a breather and enjoy time to themselves. The cost of Kiddo Playtime is $50.00 per month. Please bring a sack lunch for your child to enjoy. Registration forms are available in the church office, on the children’s ministry bulletin board and in the church nursery. If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Dayna Hauschild by calling the church office or by email: [email protected]. You can also contact Terri Bohanan via email at [email protected].

Wednesday Evening Snack Suppers Just looking ahead, we would like to once again offer Wednesday evening snack suppers prior to the classes and activities taking place each Wednesday evening beginning September 10th. We are changing the time for snack supper so that it will run from 6:00 - 6:30pm. Give some thought to hosting one or more evenings on your own, with your Sunday school class, or with your friends. Great time for fellowship! Thanks to Susan Moeder for arranging the schedule for these suppers! Please contact Susan 267-4830 if you or your group would like to sign up to serve a snack supper this Fall. You can also email her at [email protected].
