Special Needs Mom's

You may think us “special moms” have it pretty rough. We have no choice. We just manage life when things get really tough. We've made it through the days we thought we'd never make it through. We've even impressed our own selves with all that we can do!

We've gained patience beyond measure, love we never dreamed of giving. We worry about the future but know this “special” life's worth living! We have bad days and hurt sometimes, but we hold our heads up high. We feel joy and pride and thankfulness more often than we cry.

For our kids, we aren't just SUPERMOMS, No, we do so much more :) We are cheerleaders, nurses, and therapists who don't walk out the door. We handle rude remarks and unkind stares, with dignity and grace. Even though the pain they bring cannot be erased.

Therapies and treatment routes are a lot for us to digest, We don't know what the future holds, but give our kids our best. None of us can be replaced, so we don't get many breaks. It wears us out, but to help our kids, we'll do whatever it takes!

We are selfless, not by choice you see. Our kids just have many needs. We're not out to change the world, but want to plant some seeds. We want our kids accepted. That really is our aim. When we look at them, we just see kids. We hope you'll do the same.

September 4 AU-SOME Adult Book Club (1st Wednesday each month usually) September book is “Cornflakes for Dinner” by Aiden Comerford For Adults on the Spectrum LOCATION: Village Inn, 546th and L Street, OMAHA TIME: 6:30 – 8:00 pm COST: Cost of foods and or drinks are up to the individual attending to cover. The reader will also need to purchase or obtain a copy of the book being read that month. Almost ALL the books are available through local libraries in Omaha also. MORE INFORMATION: https://asnausbookclub.eventbrite.com DESCRIPTION: This book club, designed for Autistic Adults (or Adults who identify as being on the Autism Spectrum), for those who identify As a “spectrum adjacent” and those who have a direct connection of autism in their lives, will meet up to discuss the book assigned to be Read for that month. The literature chosen is across a spectrum of reading materials: meaning it is a mixture of fiction, graphic novels, nonfiction, essays and biography. The key element here is that each of the books is connected, in some manner or method to the theme of autism; although the book itself, may not be autism-specific, the topic addressed can be conceived as relating to autism. Here we will discuss the books’ characters, the social meaning behind the story, biography or poem, and immerse ourselves into an in-depth discussion with the other readers in our group. Occasionally, in association with the book, we may participate in an outside event such as the watching of a film, related to the book or tied to its theme. In conjunction with the book readings, for those who elect to just gather for the purpose of reading, we will host a “silent” book club selection away from those of us discussing a specific book. Here you can read quietly whatever it is that is of interest to you. No pressure to report what you are reading, and you are welcome to bring books to trade with others to read, if you wish. And if reading is NOT your thing, you are still welcome to come participate in the discussion, hang out doing a favorite “portable” craft or perhaps even play a game with another person present: need to bring the craft or game though J

Bellevue INFORMATION

Project Lifesaver in Sarpy County The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office implemented Project Lifesaver in 2008 to help locate missing persons. Children with Autism or Down Syndrome,

who are at risk to wander, can have their safety greatly enhanced through this program. Project Lifesaver emphasizes relationships between specially trained Sheriff’s personnel & individuals enrolled in the program BEFORE the need may arise for a rescue. During an initial home visit,

Project Lifesaver enrollees are fitted with a personalized wristband & transmitter, & family members are provided with a comprehensive overview of the program. Trained in communicating with individuals with special needs, deputies will schedule a monthly home visit to inspect & maintain the equipment & get to know the enrollee better, on a more personal basis. The cost to participate in this program is minimal, at $10 a month. For

more information on Project Lifesaver, contact Lt. Griger at 402-593-2288.

Brain Balance Achievement Center Brain Balance is a comprehensive program that combines physical and sensory motor

exercise with cognitive skill training and healthy nutrition, to place both hemispheres of the brain back in sync. In a properly functioning brain, both hemispheres communicate equally and at lightning speed, millions of times a minute. In a poorly functioning brain,

the left and right sides of the brain pass on partial information causing miscommunication. This is called Functional Disconnection, which is the root of al types of learning, behavior

and social problems. Brain Balance puts the left and right brains back in sync.

Please contact us at 402-933-3541 to schedule a free consultation or to schedule an assessment for your child.

Horses for Healing, Equine Therapy & Research Center Horses for Healing was formed by a group of horse professionals, parents, teachers and healthcare professionals with the belie that there are people in our community who can

benefit from the unique healing power of horses. While our first priority is to serve people, we also place value on providing evidence based research to back the activities our riders engage in. We are collaborating with colleges and healthcare systems to improve the quality of the research in the benefits of equine

Tech Tots Toy Lending Library based in Grand Island For families in Central Nebraska there is a Tech Tots Toy Lending Library available to you at Children’s Rehab

Center in Grand Island. Tech Tots provides developmental toys, adapted toys and devices to children with developmental and physical disabilities. Tech Tots is a FREE service!! You can check out toys to use in your home for 1 month. Tech Tots Toy Lending Library is a program of UCP Nebraska. Play is an essential component of growing up, and is the most important work, explored by children. As children engage in play, they practice and master specific physical, psychological, emotional and creative skills necessary for

understanding and interacting with the world around them. As children all have different abilities, so too are their methods of operating devices and accessing information. The use of adapted toys and devices decrease physical barriers and social barriers to play, enabling children at varied

functional levels to actively explore and achieve some independence. By equalizing play through these modifications, children learn about the cause-effect relationships and practice creative problem solving. As children recognize their abilities through the work of play, they gain the

self-confidence necessary for handing challenges in all areas of daily living. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child!

To access the Tech Tots Lending Library call Children’s Rehab Center, Located at 3004 W. Faidley Avenue, Grand Island
