The 121st Sequim Irrigation Festival’s theme is “Looking to the Future Through the Past.” As Washington’s longest continuous festival, we are constantly working on ways to keep this local celebration exciting. “Crazy Callen” Weekend and Family Fun Day, which started in 2014, proved to be very successful and will continue in

2016. This first weekend of the festival starts with the Crazy Daze Breakfast on Friday morning and continues with the First Friday Art Walk, which now provides a patron preview at the Innova-tive Arts and Crafts Fair. Bring your mother down on Sunday, May 8, for some great shopping, demonstrations and fun on the entertainment stage. The Kids Parade, Sequim Farmers Market and Driftwood Show round out the weekend. The “Grand Finale” Weekend happens during the second weekend in May and opens with the Carnival on Thursday and the Golf Tournament, Logging Show, Strong-man Competition and Fireworks on Friday. The Logging show continues on Saturday along

with the Irrigation Festival Run, Hot Rods and Harleys Car Cruzz and Show ‘n Shine, and the best parade on the peninsula: the Grand Parade.

As citizens of this amazing city, we invite you to experience the wonderful opportunities of our small town and celebrate with us during the first two weeks of May.

An event of this magnitude is made possible because of the endless hard work of the festival board of di-rectors, the countless volunteer hours by individuals and local service clubs, the businesses that recognize the value of community service and the continuous support of our sponsors. This recipe of teamwork truly makes this a “hometown” community event.

Welcome! Welcome from the Mayor

121 years and still going strong! The Sequim Irriga-tion Festival is a tribute to the pioneers who had the vision to bring water from the Dungeness River into the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, turning an arid prairie into fertile farm-lands. The flume was first opened on May 1, 1896, and an impromptu festival took place as families gathered from all over the valley, and as far away as the towns of Port Townsend and Port Angeles, to take part in the historic event.

That initial celebration set the stage for what is now the longest, continuous running festival in the state of Washington, and was named by KING-5’s “Evening Magazine” as the Best Small Town Celebration in 2015!

It’s hard to believe that those pioneers in the past might have been able to look 121 years into the future and see the ongoing success of the irrigation system and the farming industry in the valley, and also to see that the celebration would go on and continue to grow and thrive.

This event is made possible by the tireless efforts of community volunteers and local sponsors who make it happen year after year. We are thankful for their hard work and commitment to this important festival. I hope you are able to take part in many of the exciting events over the next week as we begin “Looking to the Future Through the Past.”

I am so excited to serve as the 2016 Irrigation Royalty Queen along with my wonder-ful princesses, Dana Nguyen, Hailey Kapetan and Tatum Jensen. The 121st Irrigation Festival will be May 6-15 and the Royals and I would like to invite everyone to participate in the events of the amazing festival our city has in store.

The festival has many extraordi-nary things coming up for this year. We have the Sequim High School Operetta, “Cinderella,” celebrat-ing its 50th operetta this year, and it is a must-see! The Log-ging Show, the carnival and the Grand Parade are some of the highlights, but there are many other things to enjoy.

I would like to take this time to thank our volunteers for all their hard work and time put forth to make this festival the greatest that it can be. Also, a special thank-you to our pioneers of Sequim that also have worked so hard to transform Sequim into what it is today.

Again, I would love to invite anyone and everyone to join in on this year’s festival to participate in the oldest running festival in Washington and the greatest time of the year!

Laura Friedkin is the 2016 logo designer showcasing this year’s theme of “Looking to the Future Through the Past.”

Friedkin has more than 20 years experience in graphic design, taking her natural art skills and putting them to use as an assis-tant to an art director and then as a graphic designer working on packaging design.

In Sequim, she has continued to hone her artistic talents and enjoys spending time working on design, photography, painting, beading and other crafts. Friedkin was the designer of the logo design for six previous Irrigation Festival themes.

She and her husband spend their time enjoying the natural beauty of Sequim and the surrounding area, hiking, walk-ing the beaches, and photographing the natural splendor of the Olympic Peninsula.

Friedkin enjoys the small-town warmth of Sequim and the rich tradi-tions of the community and she looks forward to being a part of the 121st Irrigation Festival and all of its many activities.

Grand PioneersMayme Faulk

Mayme Faulk, 85, a fourth-generation Sequim native, said her family living in Sequim dates back to her great-grandparents. She has the declaration

Port Angeles area for 36 years before returning to where he used to live. They have three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Blank said he used to build model boats and regular-sized boats, he played tennis and does a

lot of crosswords and word searches.

Honorary PioneersJo Robb

Jo Robb, 85, was born in Port Townsend on July 5 after a Fourth of July trip to see her grandparents in Port Hadlock. Her family moved to Port Angeles immediately afterward because her dad, Robert Iversen, was in the U.S. Coast Guard.

She moved to Sequim in 1947 and graduated with Faulk from Sequim High School in 1948.

She was married to Ivan Robb and they had three children who went on to have five grandchil-dren, Robb said. “Ivan was born and raised on the property where Sequim Walmart is now,” Robb said. He died at age 44.

She’s been with her companion Royal Seal for three years.

Robb served as a medical receptionist for Dr. Keith Senz for 18 years until she retired but wishes she never had left. “If I was 40 years younger, I’d still be working,” she said. “I liked being around people.”

After years of living in Sequim she still finds it to be “a great place to live.”

“I tried moving away a few times and came right back,” she said.

She’s also an adventurer of sorts who enjoys

to be a second-generation Grand Pioneer during the festival following her mother Dorothy (Mes-senger) Hendrickson, who held the title in 1986.

Faulk lived in the Zaccardo house in Blyn from ages 6-20 and again from 1955-2005 and raised seven children there.

Faulk now has nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

For her career, Faulk spent almost 20 years at Southwoods as a clerk and later its bookkeeper before the store closed. She went on to work in accounting for 10 years and worked another five years only during tax season.

Faulk said she has a lot of family here and after some travels preferred to be in Sequim most. In her time now, she enjoys sewing, knitting, reading, gardening and spending time outside.

William Blank William Blank, 81, a third-generation Sequim

native, said he’s “been quite a few places but I couldn’t find a better place” than Sequim.

He first lived halfway between where Sequim Bay State Park and John Wayne Marina are now before his parents, Ralph and Pearl, moved to Blyn.

Blank worked for the Milwaukee Railroad before it went “belly up,” he said, so he went on to work for Seattle Northcoast and eventually helped his brother build houses and Chet Miller build

sailing, being on the water and in the air.“They haven’t made an airplane I haven’t

wanted to fly in,” she said. “My bucket list is pretty empty.”

Milton Lynch Milton Lynch, 81, recalls moving to Sequim in

1943 during World War II. He went to first grade in Sequim and spent three more years at Fairview Elementary School before coming back to Sequim in the fifth grade.

He built a career around the grocery and retail

industry at Tradewell and spent 10 years working at Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.

Lynch has been married for 62 years to his wife Mary and they had five children with three still alive. They also have 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In 1996, he and Mary began traveling four months out of the year to Courtside, Ariz., as snowbirds and he worked part-time in retail until they stopped traveling in 2006.

As for Sequim’s appeal, Lynch said he “likes the water, mountains, weather and the beauty that’s

here. Arizona had its own beauty but not like here.”For fun, Lynch used to hunt but says, “I got one

deer in 23 years of hunting so I started fishing.” They also did a lot of camping.

Grand MarshalJim Stoffer

Jim Stoffer moved to the Olympic Peninsula in 2002 for a Coast Guard assignment and made Sequim home for his family, including his wife Diana and adult daughter Sarah. He has served as a volunteer and advocate for the Sequim School District since 2002.

He’s originally from Nampa, Idaho; graduated high school in 1979; and attended Boise State University before joining the Coast Guard in 1980. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and and an associate degree in psychology in 1993 from Columbia College.

Stoffer retired from the Coast Guard in 2010 after 31 years of active duty service in afloat and shore-based units.

Stoffer is an active volunteer in Sequim, espe-cially with the schools — last fall he was elected to the Sequim School District board of directors.

Following are the many groups Stoffer has been involved with:

Helen Haller PTA/PTO 2002-2005, Sequim Middle School PTA 2005; Girl Scout troop leader 2002-2005. Sequim High School Choir Boosters president, Sequim High School Operetta Club production team; co-chair Sequim School District Facilities Committee, past president of Citizens for

Serves on the Sequim Irrigation Festival Board; member of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce (individual mem-bership); recipient, Certificate of Merit for Com-munity Leadership and Service to Education, Washington Association of School Administrators. Also Trinity United Methodist Church lay leader; and Sister City chaperone for the Student Delega-tion Oct. 15, 2015, trip to Shiso, Japan.

Bringing irrigation from the Dungeness River to the brown and parched prairie began as a dream of four pioneer settlers who were visionaries of their time. D.R. Callen had moved to Sequim from an irrigated area in Colorado and he convinced James R. Grant, H. Hucksford and Captain Thomas Jones that “water was wealth.” Together they set out to persuade their neighbors to go along with the

idea. The skeptics called them “crazy” and said that water could not be made to run uphill; but there were those who believed. On July 20, 1895, a group of about 20 people held the first meeting of the Prairie Ditch. Incorporation papers were signed Nov. 18, 1895, and the hardy pioneers worked all winter long building the ditch and flume.

surveyor was paid partly in potatoes. Everyone gave what they could and the women cooked for the workers. Even the children helped by carrying water, running errands and tromping clay into the gravel. Finally, the following spring it was time for the “big day.” On May 1, 1896, the residents of the Dungeness Valley and sur-rounding communities came by wagon, on horseback and on foot to witness the opening of the headgate for the first time. completed with shirtwaists, jackets and perky hats and the Sequim farm kids thought they all looked rather funny. Long wooden tables had been set up and covered with hams, roasts of lamb and pork, salads, breads and chicken cooked every way possible. Each fam-ily had brought enough food for themselves and one or two

in “The Grants of Sequim Prairie,” gives a detailed ac-count of that first celebration: (synopsis)

“The day dawned fair and warm for May. The Grants arrived at the picnic grounds while the dew was still on the grass. Other families arrived about the same time, driving their wagons from the nearby Sequim prairie settlement. Those from some close farms walked the dry roads. Later in the morning groups arrived from Port Angeles.

“The Bicycle Club of Port Townsend chartered a tug boat for the trip to Port Williams. They docked at 11 a.m. and some rode their bicycles to Sequim while others loaded their vehicles into wagons. The shining cycles amazed the young people of Sequim, but the dress of the ‘city folk’ was of interest to everyone. The men dressed in turtle neck sweaters, knickers and caps and the ladies wore ‘very daring’ short skirts, almost up to their shoe tops. Their outfits were

other families, and no one went away hungry.

“At the appointed time a group of men who had built the ditch went up to the upper end to turn the waters of the river into the new flume. As usual things did not go according to plan. When the headgate was raised the water refused to turn. Undaunted, the men located a wagon load of clay and picked up a wagon full of kids. They dumped the clay at the head of the flume in the gravel and told the kids to jump in. The kids got in to the river’s edge in their bare feet and tromped the clay into the gravel until the water flowed over it into the flume. It wound its way, the muddy water slowly following the flume, then into the dusty prepared big ditch, and finally all the way to the furrow, right into the picnic area. The skep-tics who had said that water couldn’t run uphill were at last convinced.”

Princess Michaela Green is in Sheri Burke’s third-grade class and enjoys sports and all forms of art: singing, dancing, crafting, and acting. Michaela loves helping others and enjoys being a part of anything social. She is joining 4-H this year with her new kitten, Bella Rue. Her best buddy is her younger brother, Noah, whom she adores. Michaela is a very kind-hearted thoughtful young lady. Her parents are David and Shannon Green and she is sponsored by Nourish.

“What do I think Sequim will look like in the future? I really don’t have any idea! But I know what I want it to look like. When I leave home for college I want to come back and see Sequim the way it is now. I wouldn’t want my memories to change. I love living near the ocean. “I think that in the future there will be hover boards and hoverers. Also I think gasoline will not exist. And global warming will stop; therefore polar bears will not lose their home. I also think people will stop polluting the water. Another thing that I think will happen is people go to space and find an alien life form! And all people will have water, food and a warm house and every kid would be able to go to school no matter how poor they were. Also people will not hunt for sport and every animal had a home with food and water.”

Princess Logen Watkins is a very caring and loving person. Her little brother and sister adore her. Logen loves to sketch wildlife and loves to play basketball. “I think Sequim in the future will have more nature areas, trees and crops of lavender, raspber-ries and blueberries. The rivers, lakes and creeks will be full of fish and salmon. There will be more

stores, schools, hospitals and parks. People will be nice and welcome everyone. More people will visit Sequim for the pretty parks and the nice people. That is what I think Sequim will look like in the future.”

Prince Marshall Phipps Prince Marshall Phipps is 9 years old and in

Ann Riggs’ third-grade class. He is very outgoing and makes friends easily. He loves school and his favorites are math and PE. He always is eager to learn more. He is active in Taekwondo and is within three ranks of achieving his Black Belt. At home he enjoys playing outside, reading and doing treasure hunts with his two older brothers. Marshall always is on top of getting his homework done as soon as he gets home so he can go on an adventure outside or relax with a good book. His parents are Troy and Kelli Phipps and he is sponsored by Brisk Printing.

“In the future, I think that Sequim would still grow lots of lavender and elk would be the most common animal in the city of Sequim. Sequim’s future will have a bigger carnival and Irrigation Festival. We will have better school buildings. I hope that SARC will reopen. I wonder if the ero-sion will change the Dungeness River again. The Olympic Mountains will become more beautiful than ever. I hope that older generations will still share their amazing lives with the younger genera-tions. One thing I know is that Sequim will stay awesome and friendly.”

Queen Victoria Hall

Queen Victoria HallI’m a Sequim native and I love living here. I am the only girl in a family with six brothers. My parents

are Jeff and Robin Hall. I am actively involved in the Sequim High School theater department and re-cently I received an honorable mention in the 5th Avenue Musical Theater Awards for my performance as Golde in “Fiddler on the Roof.”

I served as the Sequim Education Foundation Board representative and ASB Secretary my eighth-grade year and as freshman class secretary.

Recently, I have traveled to Washington, D.C., and San Diego for conferences for the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, of which I am a Tribal citizen. From these conferences, I have learned various leader-ship skills. I plan to go to Central Washington University to get my theater arts degree and teaching certificate to be able to teach drama at a high school level.

I am a member of the Select Choir and Vocal Ensemble. I spend my free time writing songs. Some of the things I enjoy about living here in Sequim are the friendly, loving people that I have met throughout my life, the sense of community and the beautiful, clear night skies. I love Sequim and I hope to be able to give back to my community through the Irrigation Royalty.

My platform is “Advocating for Native American Education and Fighting Stereotypes.” How I plan to execute plans for the cause is by taking myself and the other Royals to the elementary schools and having an hour or two with the native children, reading with them and helping them with studies, as necessary.

Hall is 17 and her sponsor is Anytime Fitness Sequim.

Princess Tatum JensenVarsity cheer, leadership and running are three things you’ll find me doing in my spare time. I

am honored to participate in the Irrigation Festival Pageant along with all of the other genuine and truly wonderful ladies. Within the high school I am involved with many clubs: Honor Society, Be the Change and International Club.

Every year I travel to Mexico with my youth group to advance the Door of Faith Orphanage. Recently, I put together the “Boo-Hunger” food drive with the hope of encouraging the community to reach out and be the change. This is what I plan to have the Royals experience. On Oct. 31 we will all “trick or treat” for the food drive. After high school I plan to attend college to become an orthodontist.

Outside of my busy life, I enjoy watching “Grey’s Anatomy,” spending quality time with people I love, and I am constantly trying to better myself to be the best person I can be. Having the oppor-tunity to serve as festival royalty for 2016 is definitely be a blessing and I hope that I will be able to represent our outstanding community!

Princess Hailey KapetanLiving in the Sequim Dungeness Valley my dreams continue to grow each day with the support of my family. My

parents have always encouraged me to dream big and achieve my goals, no matter the level of difficulty. They have helped me keep a positive outlook no matter the how challenging the task. If it weren’t for my mom and dad, I would not have the privilege of growing up in a humble, comforting home and I’m grateful for the many opportunities I’ve been given.

I embraced the opportunity to volunteer at Pacific Northwest Veterinary Clinic and I learned a tremendous amount by shadowing Dr. Allen with multiple surgeries. Being able to be watch firsthand the process of a surgery take place has thrilled me along with making

me realize even more how much I love caring for and working with animals. I know I will love what I do for the rest of my life with my passion of working with animals. I also began volunteering with WAG as volunteer this past year which has been an inspiration to see how many volunteers have the same passion for animals as I do. The WAG program is recently in the process of building a new housing facility for stray dogs. I enjoy spending my days at WAG knowing that these dogs will be adopted into loving homes. My family also recently put my belief into practice and adopted Cody just 4 months ago. Taking time to share how much Sequim really means to me is something that makes me proud.

Princess Dana NguyenMy name is Dana Nguyen and I am a Vietnamese American.

I have lived in Sequim for 12 years. Ever since I moved here, the Boys & Girls Club has been my second home. Being raised Vietnamese at home was quite strict but the club was my outlet to have fun. I spend my time volunteering there to exhibit my grati-tude for being such a big part of my childhood and I also interned my summer of 2014. As my platform and as a Royal, I would like to give a day of fun for the Boys & Girls Club.

On weekends I help out my parents, Bill and Anna Nguyen, at their nail business. It brings me joy to help others when it’s

needed. In the future, I would like to attend a university. My in-terests for college vary — I love social work because I’m such a busy body and I love to talk to people. My parents helped me experience business since they own their own, but I also have a curiosity in dental hygiene. I wanted to be in the royalty because I want to show everyone how much I appreciate grow-ing up in Sequim. Having the chance to be a part of royalty will give me a new experience and help me grow as a person. Nguyen is 17 and her sponsor is Kim Nails.

Since 1950, the Rotary Club of Sequim (noon club) has been responsible for organizing the Irrigation Festival Grand Parade and getting it smoothly down Washington Street.

Every year, Rotary members manage the more than 120 parade entries that will drive, motor, roll and walk along the parade route.

The parade follows Washington Street and starts at noon from Dunlap Avenue and finishes at Seventh Avenue.

Local residents and visitors will settle into

their favorite spots along the parade route to enjoy community fun at its best.

Nominated last year, The Irrigation Festival has won the Best Small Town Celebration in Best Northwest Escapes, sponsored by KING-5 in Seattle. The Sequim Irrigation Festival is the longest continuous running festival in Washing-ton and this year marks its 121st year May 6-15. The festival was selected by online votes, a true testament to how much the community loves the festival.
