It’s Time to Come Home (original) Kenny Garrett – alto saxophone Vernell Brown, Jr. – piano Corcoran Holt – bass Ronald Bruner – drums Rudy Bird – percussion The Spirit is in The Sound You know it when you hear it That dialogue of your heartbeat with your mother’s as you grow in the womb The Sound is comfort, nurturing and affection Belonging, kindred and connection Sonic echoes from mothers and fathers of long, long ago... The Ancestors of Always, Forever and Infinity How you survive, strive and thrive will all be heavily contingent Upon how in tune you remain, how in rhythm you evolve How improvisational you become and how creative you continue Navigating within the knowing of the cycles, the lessons and the essence Everyone has a Spirit and, within that Spirit, a Sound The Sounds of some rise like high Cs above the fray And it is they who fearlessly lead the way They comprise the Frontline: Soldiers of Wisdom, Power and Resilience They take the hits because they can take the hits For forward the message they must take Translating the Spirit that has always been in singular sheets of identity Yet in ways we all can recall...if we but shut our eyes and listen Kenny Garrett possesses a Sound that places him in the vanguard of his field Through that majestic richness of said Sound we distinctly hear The barefoot dances of our familial celebration on red clay earth The swag of our innovative style, Our beauty in most natural states The undue anguish ever just above or beneath our emotional surface The hope instilled in our seeds, The honoring of our ancestors The serenity in daily prayer, The funk of our noirish fight Lessons in optimal living and the hope for a graceful grow-old toward ascension Reconnecting to the Sound that fills your heart like communion In the temple, the barbecue or the family reunion Be it the church, synagogue, mosque, or the plantation The Spirit is in the Sound wherever worship is taking place Kenny Garrett, arguably the fieriest saxophonist in improvisational music today, has been on this path since his first American major label offerings on Atlantic Records; Prisoner of Love (1989) which included “Sayydah’s Single File Groove,” “Peace for a Dream” and “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” among others, and African Exchange Student (1990) which featured “Ja-Hed,” “Someday We’ll All Be Free” and “Nostradamus.” His purposefulness and spiritual connectedness have always resonated with strength – from one who has been selective about whom he follows, to one with bold yet humble intention to lead, to leader excelsior. Like all great leaders, he ever remains a student – of histories ancient and modern, and of all the musicians he plays with both as a sideman and as The Man. Which means his music is always fortified by some new information. Though this music began conception in November 2019 – before the onset of ‘the pandemic’ – this music marinated during extended time for reflection – taking in a flood of disquieting new documentaries pertaining to the ongoing struggle of ‘the people’ worldwide – how those struggles are erupting in the smaller world of today where the people have become the third eye, and how the clock is ticking on maggot-infested old ways destined for a fervently needed new day. Kenny’s quintet expands and contracts for each selection with anointed guests whose contributions illuminate and put the exclamation point on the statements within – be it the opener’s closing prayer, the Spirit as refracted from the divine female voice, or auxiliary forces of batterie on the battlefield of “Soldiers.” The Drum is especially highlighted in “For Art’s Sake,” a piece that shows and proves the connection between Art “Buhaina” Blakey’s Be-Bop influence on Nigeria’s Tony Oladipo Allen who volleyed back with Afrobeat, on into The Garrett Quintet’s Ronald Bruner who lights things up with the staccato cadences of modern jazz drumming today. All in turn inspired Kenny to put his horn down for a minute to take a rare electric piano solo. This piece is arguably the most explicit expository of how Kenny seamlessly connects the past, the present and the future and, by extension, the way our culture carries on sacred traditions while blazing trails not yet known – Full Circle in Congo Square. Miles, Hubbard, Shaw, Hutcherson, Hargrove and Corea Wallace, Mulgrew, Kirkland, Geri and Jarreau Pharoah, Hancock, Valdés and Blanchard Haynes, Tain, Marcus, Q-Tip, Stern and Sting In his ongoing mission to be authentic to history and his destiny Kenny is channeling and translating Codes from the Creator His sensitivity enables him to tap the through-line of Spirit Vibrating at high-points of frequency – beyond false boundaries To instinctively gravitate toward Reflectors of Spirit As he is seeking Kindred Spirits, they have been seeking him, too With much magnetic force for the multitudes When they collide upon The Path, we all receive the blessing Feeling the FIRE from the now-Sonic BOOM Within the haunting melody of its afterglow we fully overstand Brothers and Sisters, “It’s time to come home” Sounds From The Ancestors is Revolution in Revolutions Cop the licorice black vinyl for the Uncut Elocution Uhuru / Sankofa / Amandla The Spirit is in The Sound You know it when you hear it ~ A.
