At the beginning of any course we shouldgive our learners a test to find out whatthey know, to know about their roots, whatthey do not know. I am talking about adiagnostic test. Teachers and school want to know about learnerslevel and to know this we can give our studentanother test; placement test, I think this optionmay be in language school, but we consider very

important. After we have finished teaching some topics, lessons and we have to find out if our learnershave learnt and the goals have been achieved, teachers must give the students another test;formative assessment, even a progress test, wemustnt forget to give learners feedback on theirstrengths and problems to work in English.

Passive voice is used when the focus is onthe action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing theaction.Example: My bike was stolen. In the example above, the focus is on the factthat my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.Sometimes a statement in passive is morepolite than active voice, as the followingexample shows:

In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but Ido not blame anyone (e.g. You have made a mistake.).Form of PassiveSubject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd columnof irregular verbs )

Example: A letter was written. When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note thefollowing:the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of thepassive sentencethe finite form of the verb is changed ( to be + past participle)

the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of thepassive sentence (or is dropped)
