HOW MUCH SHOULD I FEED?
- 3 -
www.buddiesnaturalpetfood.ca
An average dog should be eating
2.5% - 4% of their body weight,
whereas active dogs can eat
between 4% - 6% of their body
weight. Puppies can eat up to 10%
of their body weight, depending on breed. A good rule of thumb is: ½lb
of raw food for every 25lbs of dog.
FOR EXAMPLE: A 75Lb, 1 year old Shepherd puppy who plays for hours a day, as well as going for an hour walk a day would eat about 1 ½ lbs. of food split into 2 meals per day. A 50Lb, 4 year old boxer that exercises for two hours a day
would be considered “average” therefore he would consume about 1lb of food split into 2 meals per day. A 15Lb, 12 year old Chihuahua who only goes on a 15min walk per day would eat about ¼lb of food split into 2 meals per day.
• INCREASE for active and growing dogs • DECREASE for non active and senior dogs • USE your judgment, YOU know YOUR dog best! • PLEASE advise if your dog is a:
• Puppy
• Lactating mother • Has dietary needs
small
medium
large

A LOOK AT YOUR DOGS DIET Take a step back, visualize, and go “Back to Basics.”
This may seem strange at first, but imagine your pets diet as their prey:
- Your dogs prey is made up of mostly meat and bones – usually
about 50/50. This is why you feed un-cooked meat & bones.
• Feeding a bone-in protein blend or recreational bones and necks daily
would suffice. It is recommended to feed both.
- The organs make up a smaller percent of their prey but is still an
important factor in your dogs diet.
• Feeding 1 – 2 servings of organ a week would suffice.
- Vegetables are found through the animals stomach and intestines.
Grasses, seeds, herbs, berries will be found in there with little to no
grains.
• Feeding 75% meat and 25% veggies a day would suffice.
- Their preys diet is full of nutrients and trace elements with high levels
of omega 3 & 6’s. Dogs will eat their prey whole, which includes
eyes, brains, intestines etc.
• Feeding raw green tripe once a week as well as supplementing with our
Super Food Blend and an omega oil once a day would substitute for this.

TRANSITIONING TO RAW
• It is recommended to introduce raw food slowly into your pets diet over
the course of 2 weeks.
• Some pet owners find that “my dog will eat ANYTHING” so they have
been able to switch their dog over “COLD TURKEY”.
• If your pet is used to having food available all day, slowly transition them
to once or twice a day feedings. Then begin to transition to raw.
• Consider fully transitioning to raw in the beginning (even if you ultimately
intend to feed a mix of raw and cooked or dry).
• This will give your pets digestive system the optimal environment for
generating healthy enzymes and flora.
• If you do intend on feeding a mix of raw and cooked/dry be sure to
keep them completely separate. We recommend feeding raw in the
morning as it only takes 3 – 4 hours for them to digest and then feeding
the cooked/dry food at night as it can take up to 12 hours for them to
digest. Mixing them together can cause digestive issues with your dog.
• Feeding raw can take time. Changing your dogs diet will be new and
strange to him/her. Take it slow and don’t get discouraged if s(he) is
apprehensive at first – that is normal!

WHY IS COMMERCIAL FOOD NOT GOOD FOR FIDO? • Cooking their food takes out most to all of the nutritional value
• Grains change the naturally acidic PH. in their stomach, making it
harder for them to break down and digest their food
• Processing/cooking raw natural foods destroys and alters enzymes,
amino acids, vitamins and minerals
• Commercial foods consist of:
• Additives to make the food taste better, causing them to overeat
• Preservatives
• Salt
• Dyes
• Main ingredients in most foods are cereal grains which lead to:
• Allergies
• Intestinal problems (as their salvia is unable to break down grains)
• Hot spots, shedding, rashes, etc.
• Most commercial foods have far too many carbohydrates in them.
High level of carbohydrates can cause dogs to:
• Overeat
• Become diabetic
• Gain weight
• As well as numerous other problems
• Dogs should eat a diet with SMALL
amounts of carbohydrates

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
• Can I cook your product? Cooking is NOT recommended. Cooking destroys enzymes and nutrients in raw food, defeating the purpose of feeding raw. It can also be dangerous if you do not know how to cook raw, some raw
products are bone-in which can splinter the bones when cooked and harm your companion.
• Will raw food help my pets allergies?
It’s very possible. Raw food may alleviate allergic symptoms your dog may be having. Most allergies are
connected with the protein in grains, which can be symptoms of chronic yeast infections, rashes and stiff joints or arthritic conditions. Long term exposure to grains can cause serious and permanent illness over time. It is NEVER too late to switch to a raw natural diet. Pets of any age can be given a new diet and benefit from it QUICKLY.
• My dog is having a negative reaction to switching
diets, why is this?
Very often, when dogs (or people) switch to a healthier more balanced lifestyle, negative symptoms can arise such as: runny eyes, itchy skin, pimples, rashes, bad breathe, smelly ears, etc. This is just a part of the healing process. Your dogs body is trying to push out the negative
to make room for the positive. The symptoms should pass over a period of one – two weeks. If the symptoms keep occurring, talk to a Buddies staff member or your vet to see if there is more to the problem.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS • Can I mix raw food with kibble?
No. Raw and kibble should NEVER be mixed. If you are wanting to feed both dry and raw, feed one meal of raw in the morning and one meal of dry at night. Raw meat is much easier to digest for dogs, taking only 3-4 hours, whereas kibble usually takes 9-12 hours to digest. Kibble is a cooked processed product, with molecules being bound tighter together making it very difficult for dogs to breakdown and digest.
• How do I handle raw food safely? Keep raw food cold at all times, thaw in the refrigerator or cold
water. Avoid using the microwave. Thoroughly wash your hands and all surfaces before and after
handling raw food. Use stainless steel, glass or ceramic dishes as they are easier to
clean and do not hold toxins within the material.
Wash your dogs dish after each use. Use your dogs food within 2-3 days after thawing. Do not refreeze thawed product.
• My Vet told me to never feed my dog bones. Is this true?
No it is not true. Raw bones are extremely safe for carnivores to eat, their teeth are designed to grind the bone into powder. Their
stomach acids are strong enough to further digest the bone to provide nutrients to the rest of the body. NEVER FEED A COOKED BONE to your dog, COOKED BONES WILL SPLINTER and cause severe harm to your companion!
• Can I feed puppies raw?
Yes! Raw fed dogs are fed the same regardless of age, unlike commercial dog foods that offer confusing ranges of foods for
different ages. Puppies however, can be fed up to 10% of their body weight until fully grown (depending on breed). Be sure to steer clear of rich proteins (such as beef) and organs for the first year, as they are too rich for their tummies at this age.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
• Freezing kills all parasites and bacteria.
Freezing does kill some parasites but freezing tends to keep the “bugs” dormant and then they reawaken when the food is back to room temperature. Cooking does kill some “bugs”
but it also kills the food nutrients too.
• Chicken and turkey bones are soft and wholly digestible.
This is very true! Chicken necks provide chondroitin which is used to rebuild cartilage and collagen in the joints. Providing proper nutrients make it easy on the body to rebuild itself. Chicken necks can easily be grinded and
broken down in the dogs digestive system and act as a great natural “dental floss” for your dogs teeth!
• If I feed Raw my dog will get Salmonella A healthy gut should contain 80% good bacteria and 20%
harmful bacteria. If allowed to flourish, the good bacteria keeps the bad in check. Carnivores can eat raw meat and
bones safely because Mother Nature has provided several firewalls. The saliva of a healthy dog contains enzymes designed to start neutralizing bacteria. The carnivore’s stomach is three times more acidic than the human’s stomach. Anything that makes it past these barriers is not given a chance to get hold because the carnivore gut is short and smooth. Salmonella is commonly found in commercial treats and kibble. Because grains are so difficult
and slow to digest in dogs, the salmonella has time to start reproducing and cause sickness. Also, feeding a grain based diet throws out the acidity of the stomach leaving the animal susceptible to pathogens getting further along and into the gut.
