About JSRSince JSR's success as the first Japanese producer of synthetic rubber in 1960, the company has continued to supply the world market with synthetic rubber in the key categories of EP, NBR, SBR, BR, IR, and IIR as an “Integrated manufacturer of synthetic rubber.” JSR also distills butadiene (a major raw material of synthetic rubber) in-house, and Elastomix, which is already JSR Group company, manufactures and distr ibutes rubber compounds. A vertical business deployment that is not limited to just synthetic rubber enables JSR to provide its products in a stable manner.

Ethylene-Propylene Rubber (EPM/EPDM)

Chemical Structure and Characteristics of EPM/EPDM

■Ethylene-Propylene Copolymer (EPM)

A signature special-purpose synthetic rubber that offers superior heat, weather, and ozone resistance.EPM/EPDM is used in automobile parts such as packing and hoses, as well as in electric wires, belts, and waterproof sheets, and as a plastic modifier.

Synthesized from only ethylene and propylene, the ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) molecule lacks a double bond. For this reason, peroxide is ordinarily used for crosslinking, resulting in material that is characterized by superior heat resistance.

■Ethylene-Propylene Terpolymer (EPDM)The introduction of an unsaturated compound with a double bond as a third component to the crosslinking copolymer of ethylene and propylene enables ordinary sulfur vulcanization. JSR uses ENB (ethylidene norbornene) as the third component of its EPDM, and this allows it to be vulcanized more quickly compared to EPDM produced using a different third component. The high-diene type offers a particularly fast vulcanization rate, and is suited for use in a blend with diene-based rubber such as SBR.

Vanadium and metallocene are the two main types of catalysts used for EP polymerization, and JSR uses a vanadium catalyst. Compared to EP produced using a metallocene catalyst, EP produced using a vanadium catalyst provides a high level of rubber elasticity even under harsh conditions at extremely low temperatures.

Polymer CharacteristicsIn addition to excellent general characteristics including heat resistance, weather resistance, ozone resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical properties, these grades of EP also offers a faster vulcanization rate, lower compression set, and stronger resistance to flex cracking than general-purpose EP. JSR EP grades are suited to application in functional parts such as packing or diaphragms.EP331 and EP342, in particular, offer the best compression set and cold resistance among any of JSR EP grades through the use of array operations with ethylene and propylene. Many of JSR grades have a low Mooney viscosity (MV), and JSR EP lineup offers an excellent balance of both product properties and processability.

JSR EP is available in a full range of grades, including high-propylene and high-ENB grades offering excellent compression set, as well as high-ethylene and medium-ENB grades offering excellent extrusion processability and high filler loading. The EP123 grade uses JSR’s proprietary polymerization technology in a bimodal polymer design in order to offer a unique polymer not available from other companies.

Polymer CharacteristicsIn addition to the general characteristics of EP, these grades also have excellent extrusion processability compared to a general-purpose EP, as well as high tensile strength, elongation, and filler loading. These grades are suited for use in window frames, hoses, injection-molded parts, and other products that feature extrusion and injection with high filler loading.Oil-extended grades keep the mechanical properties of tensile strength and elongation while offering an even higher filler loading than EP57F/C, thereby contributing to lower product costs.

EP123 is used by JSR’s proprietary polymerization technology in a bimodal polymer design.By combining the advantages of both low and high molecular weight ranges, this grade offers excellent processability as well as extrusion and flow properties, thereby enabling high filler loading. Gelation is rare during processing and extrusion, and EP123 features a high green strength. This grade is suited for use in applications that emphasize roll processability, rubber for compound chemical master batches, and high filler loading extrusion products.

These low-MV grades offer fast vulcanization rate and excellent extrusion, with an excellent surface texture after extrusion even with low filler loading in a low oil combination. These grades are suited for use in various extruded products, including electric wires and window frames.

Representative grades: EP57F/C, oil extended EP96, EP98, and EP501EC

Vanadium catalyst EP has a low compression set under low-temperature conditions. In addition, the difference tends to be greater as conditions grow harsher.

In terms of recovery properties, vanadium catalyst EP shows evidence of recovery from a low-temperature state at a faster stage than metallocene catalyst EP.

Kumho Polychem Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as “KPC” below) is a Korean EP manufacturer, and is a joint venture established as a 50%/50% investment between JSR and Kumho Petrochemical. As the first manufacturer of EP in South Korea, KPC contributes a great deal to supply stability and the growth of the automobile industry in the South Korean market.JSR consigns the production of some of its EP grades to KPC.
