UseSpectra circuit-breakers provide a solution for three performance levels:- normal breaking capacity, type EN- High breaking capacity, type EH- Limiter circuit-breaker, type ELBy adding or replacing elements, it is possible to perform the followingfunctions:- earth leakage protection,- visible breaking isolation.
General chracteristics
Suitability for visible isolationSpectra circuit-breakers are ideal for fully visible isolation selection:With the handle free, the indication "open" (green display) is only possiblewhen the main contacts are separated by a distance of > 20 mm.Spectra circuit-breakers conform to standards: IEC 947-3,NF C 79-130 and CNOMO recommendations (protection of machine tools).
Double, forward-facing insulationSpectra circuit-breakers are provided with forward-facing sockets designedfor insertion of internal electrical auxilliaries in situ without the need tointerrupt the power supply. The sockets are completely insulated from the power circuit.
Degree of protectionIn front, in accordance with the NF C 20-010 standard:- basic circuit-breaker: IP 2X (E 160)
IP 3X (E 250 to E 1250)- fixed or withdrawable circuit-breaker, with terminal covers:
IP 3X
Note: the addition of electrical control units, rotary control handle, earth-leakage units or the use of withdrawable devices does not affect theprotection offered by the circuit-breaker
Temperature deratingThe maximum normal current for a circuit-breaker depends on the ambienttemperature in which it is placed. This is concerned with the temperature around the circuit-breaker:- either the ambient temperature when the circuit-breaker is installed in the
open air- or the air inside the box or casing which the circuit-breaker is encased. The reference (test) temperature for all Spectra circuit-breakers is 400C.
Derating is not automatic, the rating plug must be selected according to theambient temperature around the circuit-breaker.
SealFor extra safety, access to connection terminals and to controls can belocked off while at the same time retaining visibility.

The BA bell alarm, AS auxilliary "ON/OFF" switch, ST voltmetric shuntrelease, and UV undervoltage releases are common to the whole Spectrarange. These are placed face up on the appliance installed, without the need tointerrupt the power supply.
Internal electrical auxiliaries
Installation
Spectra circuit-breakers can be mounted on all boards for industrial andtertiary use.In particular, adapter accessories (plates, racks, ...) have been designed forintegration within our Modula 400 boxes and Modula 4000 switchboards.
Spectra circuit-breakers, in the fixed or withdrawable versions, can be fixedon panels, girders or stanchions.Mounting behind or against a door or panel requires no special effort. Thecut-out in the door or panel enables the control handle alone or all thedisplays and controls to be visible, as required.
Fixture
Power source
The power source can be connected either upline or downline of the Spectracircuit-breaker, and up to the maximum voltage for use (690V).

Spectra electronics
Traditional electronic protection devices are based on the measurement ofthe peak value of the current and the deduction of the RMS value. This method is accurate on condition that:
- the power source is sinusoidal and alternating at a constant frequency,- the load is a passive one (R, L, C).
Modern electrical installations are no longer of this type.Modern installations without a static converter or other electronic equipmentgenerating harmonics are rare,
- power networks are subject to interference, both with respect tovoltage and frequency,
- loads are increasingly active.Under these conditions, traditional electronic breakers are completelyunsuitable. According to the network/load couple, it will create an "over-protection" or an "underprotection".
Curve 1: "over-protection"
Curve 2: "under-protection"
Curve 2 shows a current with a20% distortion due to harmonic 3:- peak value Ic = 85 A- deducted RMS value: I eff. = 85/√2= 60 A
- true RMS value: Irms = 71 A
A traditional electronic circuitbreaker would not trip for thisoverload condition, resulting inthe risk of the cable or the loadbeing destroyed.

ST and I settingLT setting
Spectra samples more than 30 times per cycle.
The current sensor output signalfor each phase is sampled morethan 30 times per cycle in order toestablish the true RMS value, independent of the network, thenature of the load and theenvironment of the installation. In this way Spectra guarantees"correct protection".
Spectra: multi-protector or multi-protection
The Spectra electronic circuit breaker may receive two types of instructions:- The rating plug, adjustable from 0.8 to 1 enables the adjustment of
protection againt overcurrent according to the maximum currentsupported by the cable (Iz) and the operating current(Ie).
- Short-term (ST) and instantaneous (I) trip setting enables protection ofcables against overloads and the protection of people against indirectcontact, while taking into account the nature of the source.
The same circuit breaker enables protection of lower power sources fromshort-circuits (alternator) or the protection of a load from a high inrushcurrent (transformer). One version, without the LT function, is intended for the protection of motors(EM circuit-breaker).The fine tuning and precision of the ST setting enables discriminationbetween circuit breakers with LT settings close to each other. In order to guarantee total protection of the installation, the two settings ofthe circuit breaker are linked. Selection of LT protection automaticallydefines the ST and instantaneous (I) setting ranges. This link precludes allrisk of "under-protection" in ST mode.
High performance electronic protection. Spectra's secret in finding the correct protection lies in the combination of avery sensitive current sensor, a fast AD Converter unit and amicroprocessor specially designed for protection.
Curve 1 shows a current with adistortion of 10% due toharmonic 5:- peak value: Ic = 110 A- deducted RMS value: I eff. = 110/√2= 78 A
- true RMS value Irms = 71 A
A traditional circuit breakerwould trip prematurely, resultingin a disruption of operations.

Limiter circuit breakers
The limiting capacity of a circuitbreaker is the expression of thebreaker's capacity, in the event of ashort-circuit, to let no currentthrough that is greater than theassumed fault current.
General
1: Icc unlimited peak2: Icc limited peak (actual)
This characteristic is expressed bylimiting curves.
The great limiting capacity of Spectra circuit berakers is a result of theoptimal combination of:- a light moving part, reducing inertia,- a strong current loop, to generate maximum force of repulsion,- a slot motor with strong electro-magnetic field to accelerate the opening of
the contacts- contact materials combining good conductivity and high durability,- an arc chamber combining a high energy absorbtion capacity, speed of the
breaking of the arc and the cooling of the gasses.
This combination has enabled an exceptional breaking capacity /volumeratio.The use of Spectra limiter circuit-breakers enables a great reduction instresses that normally develop during a short-circuit:- Reduction in thermal constraints in conductors, increasing their life.- Reduction in mechanical constraints due to the reduction of the
electrodynamic forces of repulsion between conductors, which reducesthe risk of deformation or rupture of the wiring
- Reduction in electro-magnetic effects. The electro-magnetic field reduces and causes less damage toneighbouring devices and sensors.
RationalisationSpectra limiter circuit breakers offer multiple advantages:- reduction in the volume of boxes and cabinets,- reduction in logistic costs because of the smaller volume,- possibility of connecting circuit breakers with smaller capacity downline.

SPECTRA - Moulded case circuit breakers
Earth leakage protection circuit breakersDifferential protection
The protection of people and property provided by differential circuitbreakers with residual intensity measurement, is obtained by combining aSpectra circuit breaker equipped with an ST voltmetric shunt release and adifferential block (MIR).The MIR block can be adapted in situ, to the E 160, E 250, E 400 and 630circuit breakers.
The MIR differential units are:- protected against untimely tripping (no tripping by the 250A
8/20 micro-second wave, defined by IEC 947.2 app.. B)- adapted to continual bi-directional and uni-directional pulsed
components (class A).
Differential protection devices ensure the following functions:- protection of people against direct contact in TT systems- additional protection for people against contact in IT or TNS systems- protection of property against destruction or fire in the event of faulty
insulation.Differential protection is also achievable on all Spectra circuit breakersthrough the combination of a circuit breaker fitted with voltmetric release anda differential unit with separate magnetic core (SHR, MTS).
FunctioningMeasuring the faultThe sensor consists of a detection magnetic core. The core is made from ahigh permability magnetic alloy meeting the requirements of IEC 947.2,app. B
Processing the measurementThe processing circuit comprises:- a filter F- a comparator C- a timer TIn the event of a fault, the contact I closes. The rectifier simultaneously powers the voltmetric release ST and thewarning light V:- the warning light changes- the voltmetric shunt release opens the circuit breaker (the open command
can be made permanent). The warning light V cannot be reset (using the RZ button) until the fault hasbeen rectified and the circuit breaker closed.
Remote controlIt is possible to control the opening of the circuit breaker using two isolatedterminals, at the rear of the earth leakage protection unit.Operating voltage: 220 to 415 V AC or DC: no defined polarity.
Test circuitThe "test" button enables simulation of a 30 mA insulation fault; The circuit simultaneously tests:- the sensor (core)- the processing circuit- the warning light (V)- the voltmetric shunt release (ST)
PresentationFront facing:- "test" button.- fault indicator light- the RZ reset button- adjusting switch ∆ I- adjusting switch ∆ t- ST terminals (under the shutter)
Rear:- two terminals for remote control

Electrical auxiliaries
BA bell alarms, AS auxiliary "ON/OFF" switches, ST voltmetric shuntreleases and UV undervoltage releases are common to all Spectra circuitbreakers,e.g.: an AS auxiliary "ON/OFF" switch can be installed equally well on an E160 or E 1250 circuit breaker. Thus it is not necessary to specify the type of circuit-breaker. Only therelease voltage and the type of contact (standard or low level) has to beindicated with the order.
Assembly
As this is intended for installation in compartments that are accesssible fromthe front, it is not necessary to take off the cover of the circuit breaker.
General
Left-hand compartmentOption of connecting UV or STreleases plus 3-pole BA .1 or 2 additional AS contacts can beconnected to the 4-pole E 400 toE 1250 circuit breakers (an extrasocket is provided for this).
On each circuit breaker, ducts for the wiring are provided enabling thepassage of the cables to the right, left, or to the rear side of the device, without increasing its original dimensions.

Electrical control forE 400 - E 630 - E 800 - E 1250 circuit breakers
DescriptionThe electrical control is attached to the front of the breaker without removingthe cover. It enables the opening and closing of the circuit breaker by eitherremote or local control.Energy accumulation type: a universal motor "arms" a spring in which thepotential energy needed for its closing is stored.Local control via a push-button.Indicator showing:- red: "closed" or "open" due to a fault or voltmetric release (electrical control
not reset)- green: "open" and "reset".Wiring connection by means of connecting terminals.Locking in "open" position:- using three Ø 8 padlocks (not supplied)- using Ronis locks (supplied), type 1104, opening to the right.
Operation
The accumulation of energy (compression of the spring), requires rapidclosure of the circuit breaker, and is performed automatically with theopening of the electrical control unit.- closing: depressing the "ON" button (BPM) powers the closing electronics
EF, releasing the spring and closing the circuit breaker.- opening: depressing the stop/reset (BPA) button powers the motor which
opens the circuit breaker and resets the spring.Power is cut at the limit of the movement by the limit swicth (FC) contact ;the circuit breaker is thus ready for a new closure.- opening by an ST or UV release, overload or short-circuit or"TEST" button with resetting required by depressing the BPA button or ifnecessary by means of local emergency controls.Any tripping of a circuit breaker requires closing or resetting of the electricalcontrol.- use of a specific system for automation: call us.Insertion of a BA fault contact in the "rearming" circuit makes local manualresetting obligatory. If closing is permanent (relay or selector switch), do not connect terminal 2to avoid hunting.

Manual rotary control
GeneralThe rotary control is attached to the front of the circuit breakerit is equally suited to the following applications:- fixed- withdrawableor installed:- direct on breaker- behind a screwed-on panel or a hinged door.
Basic elements for all installations
DescriptionThe handle precisely indicates the main contact positions:- red: device "closed"- white: device "tripped" by voltmetric release or "test" button- green: device "open"The rotary control guarantees opening or isolation function being clearlyvisible (IEC 947-3):the handle comes into the position facing the green indicator when the maincontacts are separated by a distance greater than 20 mm.Locking off is not possible unless main contacts are fully open.A seal is available providing enhanced protection in the event of directinstallation on a door.
HandleColour:- grey as standard- red for safety circuit breakers in accordance with the standard VDE 0113
Locking in the "open" position:1 - the handle is fitted with a retractable flap giving access to three
→ 8 padlocks only when the unit is in the "open" position.2 - lock is easily snapped into place, and locking and removal of the key are
only possible in the "open" position.
CACR display contacts (optional)
Two max. NO/NC contacts. These are integrated into the converters to indicate the opening and/orpre-closing of the circuit breaker.
Basic converter
Can be fitted to the front of the circuitbreaker to transform the sidewaysmovement of the control handle intoa rotary movement. The handle can be snap-on mountedon the converter. The handle can be removed in the"tripped" position by a by-pass.
Locking converter for direct mounting through a door orpanel
Offers the same functions as thebasic converter, plus:1 - locking, preventing opening of the
door or panel if the circuit breakeris not "open".
2 - memorises the opening positionand preventing movement of thehandle if the door is open.
3 - by-pass allowing opening of thedoor or panel with the circuitbreaker "closed".
