Montgomery CollegeOpen House

By Carolyn Graybeal

This October Montgomery College’s Rock-

ville campus hosted the Fall Art Open House. The event was an opportunity for prospectivestudents to tour the facilities, meet the facul-ty, and learn about the college’s art program.Professors Zdeno Mayercak and Molly Nuzzowere among the faculty hosting demos andworkshops for visitors and students.ProfessorMayercak, who teaches sculpture and 3D designat the Rockville campus, showcased his creativ-ity and power tool skills in a chainsaw sculpturedemonstration in front of the Art Departmentbuilding. His subject, a four foot chunk of pop-lar denuded of its bark and marked with blueand white chalk. While the trunk tried to lookimpressive, Mayercak got his tools ready, includ-ing two chainsaws, an ax and a crowbar.

“For as long as I can remember I dreamtabout becoming an artist,” says Mayercak.“When I was 12 years old I made my firstwooden statue and realized instantly that I will

become a sculptor. My first big wood sculpture

was a 6 foot tall piece back in 1972.”

The day’s project was more modest in scale, but spectators were still treated to a goodshow. Welding his chainsaws and occasionallyhamming it up for the crowd, Mayercak deftlyworked his way around the wood. “In most ofmy wood sculptures I am trying to reveal the in-terior and expose the emptiness, so air and lightcan freely move through. It could be said, that Iwant inner to become the outer and I want thenon-material and environment to become partof my work.”

This concept was visible in the final piece. In justunder three hours, he transformed a thick solid trunk

into a column of tall linked arcs allowing the viewerto see through the piece at any angle. The sculpturewas on display in front of the Art Building during theOpen House. While woodchips were flying outside,on the fourth floor in a more tradition venue,Professor Molly Nuzzo led a portrait paintingworkshop. The free, day long workshop was open tostudents of any painting background.

“The main focus of the workshop is to explorepainting using very intense heightened color, withoutlosing a realistic sense of shape and form,” explainsNuzzo who readily embraces color in her own work.“Color is the reason painting is exciting to me. Myprimary focus is the human figure, and the forms ofthe face and head are fascinating to study. I find thatpainters are often overly cautious about using color infigurative work. My hope is to teach students to let goof preconceived ideas of skin tones, and embrace theexpressive possibilities of a heightened palette.

”Students used the same minimal palette andinstructed to primed their canvases a bright red onwhich they applied rich blues, yellows and browns.Mixing was done on the canvas not the palette. In thisway the painting process becomes an exercise in colorcontrol. To be successful, students must understandhow colors react together and recognize“the appearance of color is relative” not static.

As if on cue Nuzzo cautioned her students, “Watchout. That yellow ochre is looking greenish gray on the

cad background!”

“But I found the limited premixing of colors morechallenging,” says Katarina Öberg one of the studentsattending Nuzzo’s workshop. “I never tried this meth-od of painting before. But I really enjoy trying newmethods and approaches to creating art, so I amhappy I took the workshop.”The final lesson saysNuzzo? “Embrace color! Don’t use black, or over-usewhite; instead, make a chromatic temperature changeinstead of just a value change. In other words, insteadof just making a hue lighter or darker, use a differenthue! This leads to beautiful, living skin tones, andhelps students stay away from making chalky muddydead colors. Also, have fun with color! It’s endlesslyfascinating! Get excited about it! Be bold!”

Students’ final work can be view on the second floorof the Art Department.

The “who gets to be an artist” is an incentive program for people with disabilities. The facilitators teach them to harness their inner art, specifically visual art, in a oneon one basis. They teach once a week

At the time that I visited their workshop, Vicky Johnson, one of the facilitator alongwith a volunteer was helping Fred who is one of the artists. Fred is

cognitively disabled, but his painting skills and strategy blew me away. At that time,he was painting his Lion and I can tell that he really loves painting it. What makeshim so interesting is his natural way of holding the brush (like holding a knife), hisstrokes on the 50” x 65” canvas is very consistent, and like what Vicky said, “…heknows when paint is too think and he’d spread them out.” Simple to say, he is anartist by heart. The Lion is not yet finished, but surely enough that it’s going to beawesome when done.

After Fred, Trisha comes in as their next artist of the day. I was told that she’s moody at times, but drawsfantastically. Right before she started painting, she thinks first, asked Vicky and the volunteer, and she’d bevery precise to what she wants. Aside from her artistic skills, however, is how lovely a comedian thiswoman is! She would say something as she draws like “it’s from my creative intuition” or “this is goinggood” with a facial expression. Then she started a new piece from which she asked Vicky to trace her hand;although she is helping her, the idea comes from Trisha. As I kept staring at her artworks, I notice that hermasterpieces are happy and lively that reflects her emotions at that moment while she paints. The last Artistthat I met that day was Jen. She already started painting her grandmother weeks before, and I can tell youthat she has talent. While Vicky was helping her figure out the proper highlights and shadows using the trial

and error method, I notice her worriless for making mistakes; but, always with precaution. She’s spot-onon getting the right color that she wants; and her stable hands definitely gives her an advantage.

In the end of the day, “who gets to be an artist” clearly is a great program for those who are disabled tobring their artistic passion out of their dreams and into this world of ours.

On November 2014, the studentart league took a leap of faith toNew York City hoping for an epicArt-ride. The bus left in an early6:00 in the morning promptly, wast-ing no time. Everyone in the trip isexcited like a kid who got his firstride, first toy, first ice cream, or firstmovie to watch, but this time weget to watch as we walk. Some feltas if they were having an adventurefrom a different place, some were

in a different time, and some werelike Alice tumbling down the rabbithole.

At the Metropolitan Museum ofArt, every student took off on theirown in the museum once they gottheir “M” sticker. Some went to theAmerican Wing to see the greatnessof 17th-20th century paintings;mostly by famous artists like Eakins

and Sargent. Others went to see

the Egyptian Art section to feel theoozing and lingering creepy feelingof Mummies; the aura just makesyou feel you are Brendan Fraser.Others who love music went to seeMusical Instrument Gallery on the2nd floor. The museum is too hugeto stay for a day, but it was such asblast. Walking within the halls of“Arms and Armor” section bringsback Medieval times along withancient pistols and swords with

remarkable engravings, etchings, andall sorts of décor which make themlook exquisite.

Afer that, the student art league rushedto the Museum o Modern Art (MOMA).Tere were six floors, all with amousartworks rom around the world. Tismuseum is perhaps the most exciting orthe student because the MOMA containsPicasso’s Artworks, Vincent Van Gogh’s,Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Frida

Kahlo, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock,Andy Warhol, and many more amousartists. Most students started rom thebottom floor while other rom the sixthfloor where the emporary Special Exhi-bition was. Every room, every inch, everysingle space have an artwork that capti- vates people’s attention, and so it is hardto just stand on one artwork when youknow there’s another right next to it. Telast stop was at Chelsea Galleries. Right

when the Proessors stepped off the bus, everyone ollow them like a Duck and theducklings, or the Hen and the chicks. Teartworks were not as amous as the one’sin the books or discovery channel, but

they are all superb. Mostly abstract, somesends critical meaning that you get with-in one look, and some takes time or thestudents to figure out. Some galleries haveinteractive artworks to mess with like TeFlag Art Gallery presenting “DisturbingInnocence” has a human size Barbie-doll-nut-cracker; and the nuts were right

next to it, tempting audiences to use theartwork. At the end o the day, everyonetook off to get something to eat beoreheading to the bus. Within the bus, ewwere talking about what they saw, their a- vorite artworks, and their hated artworks.Others are too tired to move any longerthat simply dozed off on the seats dream-ing about the epic adventure they had.Overall, I wish you “reader” could havebeen there to see. Do not wait any longer,

Join Student Art League and experiencethe epic, the wonder, and the majestic.

Affection and whimsy are the two adjectives thatfirst come to mind when meeting Ruth Lozner andlearning about her art. Lozner gave an artist talk atMontgomery College Rockville on October 28th andshared with the audience her path, inspirations, and

some of her recent artwork. The event was hosted bythe MontgomeryCollege Student Art League. Loznerreceived a BFA from Carnegie Mellon and an MFAfrom American University. She worked as an editorialillustrator and graphic artist learning to be‘creative oncommand’. She has held faculty positions at ParsonsSchool of Design, New York, the University of theArts, Philadelphia and at the University of Maryland,College Park where she currently holds the title ofProfessor Emerita. Since retiring she has been able toexplore other forms of art. “Before, I was identifiedas a graphic artist. I was supposed to make graphicart. Now I have the freedom to explore whatevermedium excites me.”

While narrative has always been at the center of herartistic work, storytelling through sculpture is hercurrent passion. An unabashed collector, she drawsinspiration from the nostalgia, personal history orintrinsic beauty of the objects she finds and combines

them in unexpected ways to tell her own story. “I loveconstructing, but I don’t necessary have the skill tocreate everything I want. So working with foundobjects is ideal. Objects have such personality. I thinkabout what the objects do or their connection to thepast to start the creation process.

I love telling a story, particularly one that isn’t ahundred percent clear. I think it is fun [for the viewer]to puzzle out the relationship of objects and theirmeaning,” she explained. Some of her pieces such asthose in her series Memoria Vitae are deeplyautobiographical.“There are things I want to express, that are very personal to me. Art is my therapy, givingme a way to say the things I need to say.”

Her piece Love’s Labor Lost captures her emotionsfollowing her only son’s departure to college. Anantique looking baby carriage holds an empty birdcage and wooden crate filled with eggs of varioussizes. Atop the crate, a solitary egg freed of it shell

lies raw next to a gardening spade. A few downyfeathers are strewn nearby, ripped out in the rush toleave. Other pieces are inspired from the materialsthemselves.“Some objects are redolent in meaning.Others have a shape or form that I find interesting and ideas for what they could be justcome to me. But really even the most banal objectcan have meaning, some emotional tug. I In termsof materials, I am particularly fond of wood, andI try to retain the quality of the wood and crafts-manship in my final work.” In The Odd Courtship,Lozner made barely any changes to the two nestedwooden chairs that make up the piece.
