CoEd faculty participate in 9TH International Conference on Teacher Education

The International Conference on Teacher Education (ICTED) a biennial event sponsored by College of Education of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, was held on September 1-3, 2016 at the GT Toyota Auditorium Asia Center with the theme “Teacher Agency and Educational Reform: Articulations, Conditions and Possibilities”. It was participated by two CoEd faculty, Prof. Beverly V. Musa and Prof. Madelene Grace G. Rocas from College of Education as well as other teachers from the Department of Education and Higher Education Institutions in and outside the country.

The conference was timely since the Philippines gears up for the full implementation of its K to 12 program, International and ASEAN integration. It also responded to the call for teachers and other stakeholders to improve teacher quality and overall competitiveness of education institutions amidst worldwide reforms.

For all participants, the conference served as a venue for vibrant exchange of ideas on current issues, trends and thrust in the field of Education. It also provided an opportunity to better understand how educational reforms affect individual or collective teacher agency in relation to government perspective and regulations on teacher educations and reform, capacity building curriculum and pedagogical and assessment modalities in various learning environment.

The keynote, distinguished lectures, plenary panel presentations, poster and parallel sessions generated conceptual and practical discourses that addressed many imaginative ways by which teachers navigate the complexities of change in educational policy and practice.

In effect, it posed a challenge for all educators to address these issues and adjust their teaching methods and approaches in the face of

changes in the international education setting. As events and movements here and abroad continue to impact the society, it is the teachers who will carry big responsibility of cultivating the students’ mind and prepare them for the effects that these transformation will bring.

The delivery of education is a dynamic process that is continually evolving. It is now a challenge to CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE and College of Education to be ready and respond accordingly to what is demanded by the times.

Four Great Lessons

CNSC President from being

Leadership is not hard work. It is heart work. When I put my heart to become CNSC’s 4th President in 2012, I saw the great potentials of the College and had a clear vision of what and where I want it to be years ahead. That is the cornerstone where I based all the decisions that I made thereafter.

Being your President for the last four years has not been a walk in the park as you all may agree. My form and style of leadership is different than what you are used to. But I had to do my job. I had to push each and everyone of you out of your own comfort zones and pushed you even further to your full potential, for you to be a driving force in our vision of becoming a premier higher education institution in the Bicol region. I have so much faith in you as ONE CNSC.

Much has already been written about leadership, but let me share the four great lessons that I can take away in my years as your President.

1. Have courage to make unpopular decisions.I made decisions not based on the current situation but on where I want CNSC to be. I had to make

numerous decisions that are unpopular, but are nevertheless sound such as the phasing down of the basic education in Abaño Campus and the implementation of the Quality Management System. We may have suffered through temporary discomfort but I know it will have the best long-term results.

2. Empower yourself by empowering others. I believe that the sustainability of an organization lies on its people. Hence, the implementation of

administrative decentralization. Being a person in a position, gives me a unique opportunity on finding strengths in people, leveraging and celebrating them. It raises the level of personnel involvement and participation towards shared responsibility and accountability. Thereby, empowering them to create bigger and bolder

decisons relevant to their own campuses and colleges.

3. Translate your vision into reality.Like I have mentioned, I already had a vision for CNSC but this vision became even clearer when we had a

participatory planning and budgeting session in 2013 which gave birth to CNSC’s Strategic Development Plan for 2014-2020. This framework depicts the strategies that we are to take to reach our envisioned future for the College. Thus, a leader must not just create a vision, but rather build a solid plan and champion its execution.

4. Build something that outlives you.Leaders come and go; with each new leadership, plans and priorities change. But with

the Strategic Development Plan for 2014-2020 laid out, our envisioned future for CNSC will certainly live on. I hope that the vision that we have set forth for the College will continue to grow and prosper in your hearts. May the changes that we have started in the past four years be our stepping stone as we move forward and savor more successful years as an institution.

of Sto. Tomas (UST), San Beda College (SBC). Ms. Castillo discussed the Financial Planning Process, Gathering and Analyzing Data, Setting Realistic Goals, Identifying Key Financial Issues and Implementing Strategies. She imparted who must take the RFP examination, why take the examination and the benefits associated for being an RFP. According to her, those who are qualified to take the examination are the Professional Accountants, Legal Professionals, Credit Officers, Real Estate Brokers, Insurance Intermediaries, Bankers,

research capability building programs annually, research collaborations and linkages with government and private agencies, research publications in various refereed research journals of the university annually, research utilization through presentations to various significant institutions, research awards to motivate researchers and support for research conferences participation inside and outside of the university whether local, national and international conferences.

The fourth discourse dealt with the topic Intellectual Honesty: Foundation of Research Ethics by Rev. Fr. Dr. Ernesto M. Arceo, OP. STL. He emphasized researchers must know the valid research protocol of the

discipline, honestly comply with the required protocol in order to arrive at a valid result and communicate the result honestly and intellectually. Also, researchers should follow the natural law which is the ethics of right and wrong and other existing laws. The fifth discourse was discussed by Dr. Raul G. Bradecina, President of Partido State University which dealt with Varied Methods in Research Utilization which include quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and quasi-experimental researches.

Conferences like these inspire researchers and faculty members to pursue research initiatives not only for individual and institution’s growth but also for the community benefits through research-based extension activities and research utilizations.
