At ease with excellence

Welcome from the HeadWelcome members of the BGS family, and in particular our guest speaker, Old Bradfordian, medic, TV personality, advocate of the natural world and numerous good causes, Dr Amir Khan (1999), to our second virtual BGS Speech Day and Senior School Prize Giving 2021.

Today is all about love of learning and the fruits of a good education: a golden thread to which Bradford Grammar has clung throughout the ongoing pandemic. Education BGS style has provided focus and structure to many lives, students and staff alike, as much around us has been disturbed. We have persevered, kept learning and progressing. School values of excellence, determination and compassion have once again been evident in our behaviour. Our ambition has been undimmed, we have worked hard and not faulted in our support of each other. To say it’s been demanding is a gross understatement. It’s still difficult, and particularly hard on our Year 11 and 13 students. But we are resilient and remain optimistic about the future, and today we speak to these indomitable qualities. Last year I closed this introduction by saying: “On Speech Day we reflect, say ‘well done’ and commit to keep trying to be the best we can be, no hubris, no complacency, but spades of character and no small measure of good humour, even when times are tough.” One year on and nothing has changed. A Year in Review

Dr Amir Khan (OB 1999)

Amir attended Bradford Grammar School from 1992 until 1999; a degree in medicine at the University of Liverpool followed.

A popular TV doctor on the Channel 5 show ‘GPs Behind Closed Doors’ and a regular on BBC Breakfast and ITV’s This Morning, Amir recently published the Sunday Times bestseller ‘The Doctor Will See You Now,’ which charts the highs and lows of his 15 years as a doctor. A partner in one of the UK’s busiest surgeries, Amir is also a GP trainer and Honorary Senior Lecturer at both Bradford and Leeds University.

We are thrilled to welcome Amir back to BGS for Speech Day 2021 and are grateful to him for sharing his inspirational insights and perspectives on his time here.
