1. Short History of Islamia College.

2. Short History of Chemistry in Islamia College.

3. Contribution of Islamia College as a College and

as University.

1. SHORT HISTORY OF

ISLAMIA COLLEGE

The North West Frontier Province was formed in1901, after its separation from Punjab. Muslims were92% of the total population. The percentage ofeducation was 11.7% in Muslims, 36.30 % Hindus and

22.30% Sikhs. Edwards Missionary High Schoolestablished in 1855 was developed into EdwardsCollege in 1901. The idea of a College in the provincefor Muslims was strengthened in the mind of SirSahibzada Abdul Qayyum (APA of Khyber Agency) andRoos Keppal (Chief Commissioner Peshawar) aftertheir visit to Aligarh, where some Muslim studentsgave them humble donations for the purpose ofStudent Hostel, Hall or any other better Project.

In April 1911, a Committee was formed to collectsubscriptions , and to look after various aspects ofthe project and had Sir Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum asits first honorary Secretary who arranged the first

meeting of this Committee on April 12, 1911, at theresidence of Abdul Karim Contractor in MohallahMundi Beri Peshawar City. The meeting wasattended by Ghulam Sarwar Khan Alkozai , Ghulam

Haider Khan , Abdul Karim , Habibullah Khan ,Khushal Khan, Sethi Karim Bakhsh, S. Abdul Qaiyumetc. for Collection of contribution.

Abdul Karim contractor donated Rs.10,000/- , S.AbdulQayyum contributed Rs.1000/-, Mian Rahim ShahKaka khel donated Rs. One lack, Sethi Karim Bakhashgave Rs.50,000/- for contribution of Mosque. Nawab

of Dir promised for one lac and 25,000/- besides fourhundred trees.

Subscriptions were given by Afirdi heads, poor Labour,Tangawalas, Policemen, Artisans and Pitty

Businessmen. Bibi Gul, widow of Khairullah Khan of Prang gave her

ornaments on June 6, 1911.

In six months time about Rs. 5 lacs were collected

which later on swelled upto 15 lacs in 1914.

CHOICE OF LAND

From the five choices;

Wazir Bagh.

Makri Bazaar on Daudzai Road Larama Area.

Rajar Area of Mohmand Tappa, Kohat Road.

Mian Rahim Shah offered his land in Nowshera.

5th and final choice of the land was between

Tehkal and Burj Hari Singh (Hari Singh was a sickGeneral of Maharaja Rangit Singh defeated in1835, by Afghan Muhammad Akbar Khan).

CHOICE OF LAND

The land was the property of Khalil of Tehkal out

of which a total of 916 K and 17 marlas were

bought in 1911, by a total amount of Rs. 31,166.

The estimate for the college building and

equipment was Rs. 334,500/- and Rs.55,200/-

the annual recurring charges.

FOUNDATION CEREMONY

The foundation stone Laying Ceremony of the

Mosque and Darrul Ulumi Islamia was held on

21st March 1912 by Haji Sahib Tarungzai.

25-30 thousand people participated including

Badshah Gul Sahib of Baja Bamkhel. A few verses

from Holy Quran were recited by the first Dean,Maulvi Qutab Shah.

FOUNDATION CEREMONY

The participants of the function wereentertained with refreshment and food.

The expenditure of the function was borne byMian Rahim Shah, Vice-President of Dir State,Abdul Hamid Khan, Rais of Badreshi, Abdul MajidKhan, Rais of Tangi, Arbab Dost Muhammad,

Arbab Abdur Rauf and Arbab Muhammd Murad. Mian Karim Bukhsh Sethi distributed sweets and

lungis etc among the Ulema.

The preparation of the construction plan wasmade the responsibility of the M.E.S. whichworked in the consultation with the public worksDepartment and the College committee.

Construction was started in the second half ofthe year 1912. Which included one Arts Collegeand a hostel, Darul Ulum and a hostel, a highschool (Islamia collegiate) and three hostels, a

Mosque and residences for the principal andHead Master .

Construction of the high school was completed beforespring 1913 (in nearly ten months) and Collegebuilding before Oct 01, 1913 ( in nearly sixteenmonths)

The opening ceremony of Islamia Collegiate Schoolwas performed on 5th April 1913 and classes startedon 14th April 1913.

The College was opened on Oct 01, 1913, students

were admitted in First year and 3rd year only. The firststudent got enrolled was Sahibzada Khurshid, wholater became the first Muslim governor of N.W.F.P. in1949.

Initially the College had only 10 teaching staff

members one clerk, one accountant and only two

hostel, Qayum Manzil and Hardings, with Mr.

L.Tipping as the first Principal and AllamaAnayatullah as the Vice-Principal and Maulana

Qutab Shah as the Dean of Theology.

At present the total staff of Chemistry is 22 out of

which 14 are Ph.D Doctors , two are M.Phil and 06

M.Sc , all of which are students of Ph.D. Total no of

research papers of chemistry staff, are 326 with

total impact factor of 373.

3. CONTRIBUTION OF CHEMISTRY

& THE COLLEGE

Nearly 60% of the students at intermediate levelare sent to Medical and engineering Universitieseach year.

Four Chemistry Professors became the chairmenof chemistry department University of Peshawar( Dr. Merghoob Ali , Prof. Nowsharwi , Dr. M.A.

Akhtar , S.M. Bahader Shah ).
