3. Chapter Activities

3.1. Outreach Activities

3.1.1. School Visit

School Name: Aadarsh Bal Niketan, Roorkee

Attendees: 45

Optical Outreach Kit:

The Optical outreach kit was demonstrated to the students showing the effect of different mediums affecting the travelling path of light and therefore leads to the dispersion of light. The students also learned about the functioning of magic lighting remote controller and the LED (light emitting diode) bulb being operated with the help of remote control. The students were able to understand light constituents i.e. three fundamental colors red, green, and blue. Moreover, students learnt the generation of other color lights with the help of these fundamental colors. The different functions of the magic lighting remote controller like strobe, flash, etc. were explained to the students. In addition, following experiments were carried out during the visit: -

i) Pinhole camera experiment:

The experiment was carried out to demonstrate that the light travels in a straight line. The aperture size was varied to modulate the brightness of the light. For the increase in the aperture size, the light brightness increases but at the cost of the image focus.

ii) Kaleidoscope experiment:

The bouncing and bending properties of the light were demonstrated through this experiment. Students came to know that the number of images can be maximum if the angle between the mirrors is made minimum.

3.1.2. Leadership Workshop, Optics + Photonics 2016 Conference, San Diego, CA,

USA

The Travel grant was sanctioned for the Optics + Photonics 2016 Conference, San Diego,

CA, USA under the SPIE Chapter officer Travel Grant. Mr. Anant Aravind Kulkarni

presented a research paper titled “Novel compact model for multi-level spin torque

magnetic tunnel junctions” on 28th August 2016.

3.2. Expert Lecture Series

Duration: 08th November – 10th November 2016

About the Talk:

The re-discovery of graphene by Geim and Novoselov, just barely a decade ago, revealed

that it is possible to exfoliate atom-thick two-dimensional (2D) materials from bulk Van der

Waals crystals. Because of its peculiar electronic band structure and extraordinary electrical,

optical, thermal, as well as mechanical properties, graphene turned into the focus of extensive

scientific research during subsequent years. In this talk speaker will discuss graphene as a

platform for future optoelectronics.

Speaker’s Biography:

Prof. Berardi Sensale-Rodriguez received his Engineer's degree from Universidad de la

Republica – Uruguay in 2008, and the PhD degree from the University of Notre Dame in

2013. In July 2013, he joined the faculty of the University of Utah, where he is currently an

Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His early research interests

were focused on numerical modeling of RF/microwave components and analog circuit design

oriented towards low power (sub-threshold) portable and implantable electronics. His

doctoral work was focused on the proposal and development of novel THz devices and

systems. More recent interests include plasmonics, metamaterials, 2D materials, and

optoelectronic devices. He has authored/ coauthored over 70 research articles in these and

related areas.
