“Colourful, physical and packed with energetic street gymnastics; a great show for children and their families to enjoy.”The Burton Mail, UK

Spill is a highly physical and engaging live performance experience created by Artistic Director/Choreographer Shaun Parker and Composer Nick Wales, whose credits include Sydney Symphony, Sydney Dance Company, Sarah Blasko and SBS. Using children’s playground equipment as the set design, Spill was originally created for performance in outdoor public spaces but has been adapted for indoor performance as part of this exciting double bill.

Spill has played 167 performances to over 30,000 people across the UK, New York and Sydney.

Spill is suitable for children and their families, schools and general public audiences and features four urban, agile and charismatic performers who run, glide, jump and swing their way across the architecture of the playground. This 30-minute highly engaging dance performance combines quirky, dynamic movement with high-energy street dance and parkour and is accompanied by a 30-minute public workshop.

The dancers of Spill blaze a colourful trail across the structure of the playground apparatus, maneuvering around, over, under and through swings, climbing frames and monkey bars. The work, which can be performed in a proscenium theatre, black box or outdoors, is accompanied by a lively, dynamic electro acoustic score composed by Nick Wales.

Spill was originally commissioned by the International Dance Festival Birmingham, London Olympics 2012, the Arts Council of England and the BBC SPACE Channel with support from the British Council and the Australia Council for the Arts. Spill has toured to the Dublin Dance Festival, Nottingham Children’s Festival and City of Sydney’s Art & About Festival, marking the production’s Australian premiere. Spill has gone on to play numerous festivals across the UK and made its US debut for Summer Stage in Central Park, New York City.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTBoth shows are underpinned by workshops which are included in the weekly fee:

• SPILL – integrated Electro Pop dance strategy

Leading up to each tour, the Company will roll out an online tutorial teaching the Electro-pop ’80s dance sequence that is used in the show. Here, the audience can learn the fun choreography from the show, which includes moves like “the sprinkler”, “Walk like the Egyptian”, the “Who’s your Daddy?!”, “the krump” and other world famous daggy dance moves.

The Electro-pop can be learned by all the family: parents, grandparents and grandchildren before our arrival. A special Electro-pop dance workshop will also be delivered following the show. In each town, a new dance sequence created by the locals will be added to the original choreography, gradually building on the sequence, ultimately joining the movements of people across Australia into one big dance! This will be filmed and shared with all of the communities as the journey progresses!

To view the full version of the Electro Pop choreography with our dancers, click here: https://youtu.be/Pfbo1k63-n0

This choreography will be broken down into online tutorials such that audience members can learn the dance moves before attending the performance.

• TROLLEYS – Found Objects program:

Inspired by an abandoned supermarket trolley, which led to the full Trolleys show being created, this program offers a link with local art galleries, who can hold an exhibition of their community artists with works inspired by, and utilising “Found Objects” - “How can trash become beautiful?”, “How can found objects become art?” The beauty of this program is that it can be accessed across all age groups and offered to local schools and community groups as well, with the final showcase of art being held in their galleries.

The project is accessible and participatory by way of viral engagement with local communities. During the pre-event lead up and season, local residents will be encouraged to engage online, sharing images of abandoned trolleys, rescued trolleys, rogue trolleys and re-invented trolleys. There is also opportunity to capture the general publics’ impression of a 30 second “trolley dance”- encouraging people to share Mp4 or Vimeo uploads of their own individual trolley encounters.
