Kenneth Hashimoto, M.D., retiredchair of the Department ofDermatology, has pledged a$100,000 gift and a $1.5 millionplanned estate gift to create aresearch chair in his name for thedepartment.

Dr. Hashimoto graduated fromNiigata University School ofMedicine in Japan in 1955. Helater immigrated to the UnitedStates where he completed his residency at the University ofMaryland and then worked as aFulbright Scholar at MassachusettsGeneral Hospital.

In 1980, he joined the faculty at the Wayne State University School of Medicine,where he served as professor and chair of the department of dermatology until1999. Although retired, Dr. Hashimoto still finds time to teach and he spends aportion of each year practicing in Japan.

“Research is essential for the success of this department,” said Dr. Hashimoto.“Dermatology relies heavily on basic science and research to discover new waysto treat illness. This specialty has grown over the years and has begun to flourishin recent times. This chair will help the School of Medicine and ensure that thedepartment remains in the forefront of the research field.”

Finding innovative ways to preventand treat blood clotting disordershas been a lifelong passion for Jeanne M. Lusher, M.D., distinguished professor of pediatricsat Wayne State University Schoolof Medicine and director of theHemophilia, Hemostasis andThrombosis Center at Children’sHospital of Michigan.

“My first experience with hemophilia, which is very rare infemales, was during my residencywhen a one-year old girl came intothe emergency room bleeding profusely and we didn’t knowwhy,” Dr. Lusher said. “I was able to document that she had severe hemophilia.Since then, I have worked with thousands of children, and can see first-handthe marvelous benefits of knowledge gained through research.”

Dr. Lusher’s impressive 35-year career in medicine is matched by her commitmentto the School of Medicine. In 1998, she created the Marion I. Barnhart, Ph.D.,Endowed Chair in Thrombosis Hemostasis Research with a $1.5 million gift.She subsequently added $1.2 million as a planned gift for this chair, which willbe renamed the Barnhart-Lusher Endowed Chair after her death. Most recently,Dr. Lusher increased her bequest by $300,000 during the university’s 2004Faculty/Staff Campaign.

“Enhancing medical research is so important. I feel very good about being ableto support it,” Dr. Lusher says. “I would like to encourage everyone to investigatethe possibilities of support through an estate plan. It is certainly an easy way togive a significant gift.”

Creative ways to support the

Gifts from alumni and friends can make a positive impact in many ways on Wayne State University, its colleges and schools, its research, programs and scholarships. Carefully planning your investment in the university can stretch the value of your gift, enabling you to do much more for the institution and its studentsand faculty than you may think possible.

A carefully planned gift also can benefit you and your family. Your tax savings can be substantiallyincreased, and some planned gifts can provide income for your lifetime or the lifetime of another individual.

A cash gift or check can be used immediately in the areas to which it is designated, or a perpetualendowment can be established with gifts or pledges of $25,000 or more. This type of fund generates anannual income for a purpose designated by the donor – a college or school, a department or program, facultysupport or student scholarships.

Publicly traded stocks or bonds make excellent gifts and can be transferred easily to Wayne StateUniversity. If the securities have appreciated, you not only receive the benefit of the full fair market value asa charitable income tax deduction, but you also avoid the capital gains tax if you have owned the securitiesfor more than one year. A bequest in a will or trust stipulates that the entire amount or a percentage of your estate be given tothe university after your lifetime. Your bequest may be designated to a specific college, school or program, toa faculty endowment or scholarships, or it may be unrestricted and used where needed most. Gifts from yourestate to Wayne State University are exempt from estate tax.

Life-income gifts provide income to a donor and/or another individual, such as a spouse. The donor realizesincome tax savings for the year the gift is given to the university. A charitable gift annuity, for example, provides a guaranteed income for a spouse or other loved one, and a deferred income gift annuity providesyou with additional retirement income. At the end of the beneficiary’s lifetime(s), the remainder is transferredto Wayne State University.

Retirement fund assets would be heavily taxed if given to an individual. After your lifetime, the remainderof your retirement fund can be assigned to Wayne State University as an unrestricted gift or designated for acollege, school, program, faculty endowment, or student scholarships.

Life insurance, in the form of an old policy no longer needed by the original beneficiary or a newly createdpolicy to benefit Wayne State, can be a helpful investment in the university. Small premiums now can generatea major gift in the future, and premiums for these policies may be tax deductible. Many employers providegroup life insurance as a benefit, and Wayne State can be named for a portion of proceeds. This giving vehicleis an important one for younger donors who wish to make a leadership gift.

Charitable lead trusts provide income to Wayne State over a set number of years and then transferassets to children or other individual(s) named by the donor. This plan enables heirs to receive assets whileminimizing taxes.

Other assets that may make helpful gifts while saving taxes include real estate (subject to universityapproval), closely held stock, business practices (law, medicine, etc.), partnerships, contracts, leases, royaltiesand patents.
