Welcome to the first issue of “SPIRITUAL FRAGRANCE OF Pt. Sriram Sharma Acharya.

These are exciting times. There has been an explosive growth in all fields of human endeavor and sciences in the last century. Obviously advances in science and technology have transformed society beyond measure than what is was even 50 years back.

Yet At the dawn of a new century and a new millennium, we find ourselves stuck in a scientific worldview that leads us into ever more destructive modes of existence without any guidance toward wisdom. Our behavior, guided by this worldview, actually threatens our own existence as a species! Global warming and other disruptions of Earth's weather systems and climate, mass starvation and disease epidemics, new threats of nuclear, religious, oil and water wars, environmental toxins and waste buildup, genetic engineering disasters, soil degradation and erosion, water pollution, increased discrepancies between extremes of poverty and wealth, etc. vie for status in our arsenal of species suicide weapons. Yet, we know in our hearts and minds and in our very bones that crisis looms so large now that we can no longer ignore it, that things must change quickly before it is too late.

Both Science and Spirituality deal with our experience of the world. Physical Science try to visualize the world as a set of events and processes in space and time and connected by a chain of causality whereas Spiritual Science explores the inner world where it transcends all boundaries of known concepts of space, time and causality. Spiritualism should be the framework where science, politics, business, arts and education should operate from. Only then can there be all round and integrated development. If not science will only succeed in creating silos of excellence which would benefit parts of the society and may even create conflict.

We want to present a new thinking for people who yearn for a new and inclusive scientific model of reality that does not separate their experience of this physical world from their spiritual experience of life, heart’s life story from that of the mind. This will bring forth a new world order that will foster greater understanding among people, harmony in their lives and an opportunity to work in unison and participate in the evolutionary process. With humankind this is something that is realistic and can be manifested in our lifetime.

Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya (September 20 1911 – June 2 1990) was a seer, sage and a visionary of the New Golden Era - Founder of All World Gayatri Pariwar. His life and work represent a marvelous synthesis of the noble thoughts and deeds of great personalities like Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Mahatma Gandhi, Socrates and Confucius. Rev. Pt. Shriram Sharma was a rishi of the present age whose heart pulsated with compassion for all beings. Every moment of his life was devoted to the welfare of people and the refinement of the moral and cultural environment. He also pioneered the revival of spirituality, creative integration of the modern and ancient sciences and religion relevant in the challenging circumstances of the present times. His personality was a harmonious blend of a saint, spiritual scientist, yogi, philosopher, psychologist, writer, reformer, freedom fighter, researcher, eminent scholar and visionary.

Biography

Acharya Shriram Sharma (revered as "Gurudev" by his disciples) was a great devotee of Goddess Gayatri and had attained perfection in realizing its utmost potential. He successfully practiced and mastered the highest kinds of sadhanas described in Hinduism. He also deciphered the hidden science of Tantras. He attained the supreme knowledge of the philosophy and science of the Gayatri Mantra and yoga. He pioneered experiments on simple sadhanas, which could be easily pursued by the common man / common masses. He initiated programs of spiritual and intellectual refinement of millions of people without any discrimination of religion, caste, belief, creed , gender, or social status. He propagated this knowledge for the Enlightenment of humanity, people across the globe. Shriram Sharma initiated the unique movement of Vichara Kranti (thought revolution movement) with the very first issue of "Akhand Jyoti" ( monthly magazine name). By 1960, he had translated the 4 Vedas, 108 Upanishads, 6 Darshanas, 18 Puranas, Yogavashishtha, and hundreds of Aranyakas and Brahmanas in Hindi with lucid commentaries to enable the masses to understand the knowledge contained in them. The translation was also aimed at eliminating misconceptions, superstitions and blind customs, which were propagated in the medieval era by deliberate misinterpretations of the Vedas and other scriptures. Understanding the modern day psychology of the people, and recognizing the non-relevance, in the present times, of the mythical characters and the background of life depicted in the Puranas, he wrote "Pragya Purana" in the narrative and conversational style of the ancient Puranas to preach the eternal principles of happy, progressive and ideal life with practical guidance relevant to the modern age. He wrote about 3500 books on almost all aspects of human life, whether it be the elucidation of the esoteric aspects of the subtle science of spirituality, research directions on brain and consciousness, discussions on child psychology and family institutions, guidelines on mental, emotional and physical health, and cheerful attitude in daily life. In his comprehensive and penetrating analysis we find no place for delusion, confusion or misconception. Through his literature he strikes a chord of empathy in the reader. The message conveyed in the literature touches the reader's heart with deep sensitiveness, producing a sea of change in his attitudes and ideologies. As a part of his intensive study of the Indian culture and religious philosophy, he rediscovered the sociological and psychological importance of pilgrimage. He taught us how the ancient glory and the real purpose of the tirthas (sacred places of pilgrimage) could be revived in the present times for the welfare of the masses.

The Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya (Divine Culture University) recently inaugurated under the auspices of Shantikunj is an instrument for the revival of the Divine Indian Culture as per his vision. According to the pressing need of the present times, he developed Shantikunj, as spiritual center for implementing the teachings of Great Rishis (Saints) into practice. He established Brahmvarchas Research Institute at Haridwar, a center for inter communion of science and religion. The prime aim of establishing the Brahmavarchas Research Institute is to establish the ancient Indian Yogic Philosophy as the science and art of living.

Scientific Spirituality

Gurudev was convinced that modern man could not be persuaded to accept the values of life patronized by ancient spirituality until and unless these were proved to be scientifically viable for the welfare of the individual and the society. This was indeed a Herculean task, given the trends of intellectual and scientific evolution over past millennium and almost simultaneous deterioration of religion and culture, which had resulted in a near total neglect of spirituality in the human life and the emergence of blind faiths, misconceptions, and prejudices. The Brahmavarchas Research Institute founded by him in 1979 near Shantikunj stands as a living example of how his ideas could be implemented and researched in the modern laboratories.

The Dawn of the New Era

During 1984-1986, he carried out the unique spiritual experiment of sukshmikarana meaning sublimation of vital force and physical, mental and spiritual energies. He authored a special set of 20 books (termed Revolutionary Literature or Krantidharmi Sahitya) highlighting the future of the world and conveying the message of the dawn in of the New Era of Truth during the 21st Century. On 2nd June 1990, he voluntarily shed his physical sheath. The divine light of knowledge and human glory kindled by him continues to illuminate the excelling path of their great mission under the auspices of Shantikunj and promises the ushering of "The Age of Truth" in the years to come.

Biomagnetic ocean in the human body

Human body is a wonderful creation of the supreme natural power. It is endowed with all the physical and conscious energy forms existing in the universe. The living system of human body can be identified as a grand magnet or as a moving electric powerhouse. The human-magnet through its vital energy can affect and get affected by others. An in-depth study and controlled utilization of such effects at (bio)physical and subtle levels offers challenging and important research problems in advanced science. The source of biomagnetism in our body gains energy from the earth's gravitation similar to what the latter gains from the sun. All the universal magnetic forces affect the biomagnetism of the human body. Vital energy levels of a person vary according to the biomagnetism of his/her body. The visible effects of reduction in this magnetic power are: dullness in eyes, spiritless face, dry skin and lethargic body. Feelings of oblivion, illusion and fatigue are common in people with weak biomagnetism. Elevated levels of biomagnetism on the other hand, give rise to corresponding increase in the general activeness, charm, enthusiasm, sound memory and intellect. Persons having more powerful biomagnetism naturally attract and influence the weaker ones.

The reception of cosmic radiations by human-psyche is also characterized by the latter's biomagnetic quality. The north pole of the human magnet is said to reside in the human brain. The formation of an aura (halo of light) around this vital organ is a result of an upward bioelectric flow near the subtle pole. The south pole of the human-magnet is situated near the genital organs. The sexual activities are controlled by the vital energy through this pole. Excessive stimulation of this pole results in severe loss of the vital energy.

Several scientific investigations were taken up to record the biomagnetic energies present within the body. Doctor Y.A. Kholodov of the erstwhile Soviet Union investigated the effects of a constant magnetic field on rabbits. In the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine[1] /) Whole-body exposures to fields between 30 and 2000 oersteds resulted in nonspecific changes in the [animals’] electroencephalograms [EEGs]. He also saw that the natural and artificial fields in man’s environment may have an influence on health and behavior via the nervous system and hypothalamus. Dr.Loenid Vasilev also from the Soviet Union performed extensive investigation into this which were detailed in his book “Mysterious phenomena of the human psyche”[2].

Dr. Albert Abrams tried to measure the electromagnetic- energy emitted by a body. Dr.Abraham's research indicates that the rate of electromagnetic energy through a human body is of the order of

cycles per second; the rate of receiving energy from cosmic radiations however, is much higher. He developed a hypothesis that the human organisms are very sensitive transmitter and receiver electromagnetic waves. Abrams concluded that the frequencies of these transmissions was unique to the human wave length and would vary in states of health and disease. The human organism has its healthy 'tone' as represented by harmonious vital functions and the state of "mis-tunement" represent by the clinical signs and subjective symptoms. This contributed to the growing field of Radisthesia which predicted that all diseases have their own "vibratory rate" which can be measured and treated with his electronic boxes.

Advanced research in related biomedical sciences has shown that the mutual adjustment of the magnetic fields among various tissues and cellular interactions control the normal/healthy functioning of our body. The continuous circulation of blood due to the minute iron and other chargeable particles in the RBCs results in a consistent flow of an electric current. The electric field generated thereby also creates a biomagnetic field inside the body [4]. The iron and other charged particles thus provide energy for various ionic flows at the cellular and organ levels. Because of the highly complex but extremely well balanced electromagnetic interactions between a large numbers of constituent macromolecules, each healthy cell in the body is like a string power storage/supply unit. Any imbalance (due to the intercellular and the extracellular ionic flows) in the cell's electromagnetic activity amounts to a loss of the vital energy, which results in a reduced resistance to various diseases.

Investigators at the Ontario Medical Association, Canada observed a case of one Ms. Carolina Clare who possessed an excess of bio-magnetism. With a little stimulation her body-magnet was able to attract and stick iron made substances like knives, spoons, nails etc. Similar presence of bio-magnetism was observed by some scientists in the fingers of a female student at Maryland University. She was able to hang a 1 ft X 1 inch iron rod in the air by a mere touch of her finger-tips. Compass needles placed near her used to stop functioning. Even the people in her proximity would feel being pulled by an unusual force of attraction. A man named Frank Mac-Quinstry in Jopline, Missouri (USA) was sometimes unable to walk because his feet would stick to the earth in the stimulated state of the sensitive bio-magnet of

his body. Pulling off by a stronger external force used to be his remedy in such situations. There are several such recorded cases of “unnatural” bio-magnetism exhibited by humans. The Greek saint and Doctor, Hippocrates had great faith in the power of vital energy. His philosophy states that - as the body survives because of the power of the soul, it should not be difficult to cure and regulate its healthy state by using the vital energy supplied by the power of Prana (vital energy). In the recent past, a group of Parapsychologists headed by Dr. Thalmamos has experimented on some spiritual healers including celebrities like Dr. Marshal Warshey. Dr Warshey a urologist by profession, was known in the western countries for creating 'liveliness' in the patients by a mere touch of his finger tips. Many otherwise noncurable complaints of headaches were also reported to have been cured by this spiritual healer.The immense physical power of the vital energy has been discovered and investigated by different groups of scientists under different names such as- Biomagnetism, Bioplasm, Actoplasm, Bioflux etc. The manifestation of this power is negligible in plants and other organisms as compared to that in the human beings. What is the science behind creating my own destiny? The law of divine justice follows a mysterious course. In the world we come across many instances of virtuous people undergoing endless suffering and pain; sinners perpetually enjoying pleasurable lives; indolent achieving success; hard-working people meeting repeated failures; the wise suffering adversity; not so wise living in prosperity; egoists held in high esteem; and the righteous held in contempt. We find people born with silver spoon in their mouths and others facing one misfortune after another throughout life. The well-known human norms for achieving happiness and success do not always appear to hold good in practical terms. Such phenomena raise many questions and doubts about the role of fate in life, the will of God and the relationship of virtuous and evil deeds with happiness and unhappiness in life. The rationale given in the ancient literature in this respect does not adequately satisfy the inquisitiveness of modern minds. Consequently, the new generation is becoming more inclined to accept the atheistic ideologies, which regard God and the religion as phantoms creations of sick and fearful minds; the human body merely a chemical combination of inert elements; and denies the very existence of an immortal soul. The new generation is made to believe that there is no Supreme Being or God; that destiny has no role to play in life; and that only arbitrary man-made state machinery has the powers to dispense punishments and rewards. In this series an attempt has been made to give rational and logical explanations of relationship between human deeds and destiny. It explains how events of good fortune and misfortune, happiness and suffering in human life are consequences of one’s own deeds. Who Maintains the Record of Sins and Virtues? A verse in the scriptures states that a suppressed conscience takes one to hell and an awakened conscience leads to heaven. This statement explains the enigma of Heaven and Hell i.e. an individual himself is responsible for creating heaven and hell in his life. Scriptures (Garura Purana – an Indian scripture) describes this phenomenon metaphorically. It is mentioned that in the astral world (yamlok)

there lives a deity named Chitragupta, who maintains the record of good and evil deeds of a sentient being. When a living being dies and its soul enters the astral world, this deity presents the record of its good and evil deeds and, based on this account, the soul is assigned to live in heaven or hell. Common sense would not accept existence of a deity like Chitragupta. The number of human beings inhabiting this earth is in billions. If we take into account the other living beings of millions of non-human species, the total number would be beyond mathematical calculation. It would be an impossible task for an individual to work day and night without rest for millions of years maintaining records of each moment of life of innumerable beings of the cosmos. Impracticability of maintenance of such a stupendous record puts a question mark on the very existence of Chitragupta. Modern science, however, substantiates the reality underlying the metaphorical descriptions given in the scriptures. Science has now established that all mental, verbal and physical activities carried out by an individual having a discriminative mind leave subtle impressions on the deeper levels of the psyche. In this way, like the compressed audio-visual recordings of events on a microchip of the computer or compact disc, all good and evil deeds are being recorded in the secret chambers of the sub-conscious mind. This record, like a CD remains in storage till it is required to be played at a desired moment through an appropriate mechanism. Since time immemorial, enlightened beings in India have wondered about the role of fate in human life. Sanskrit and Hindi literature have abundant references to the “footprints of Karma”, which it is said, cannot be erased by any degree of intellectual endeavor.

In Indian spirituality, karma stands for any physical, verbal, mental or social activity. It means that each karma produces an imprint (Rekha), which cannot be erased before creating a reaction (Karmaphal). There is a belief that the Creator (Lord Brahma) inscribes the destiny on the forehead of a human being and this Divine Inscription cannot be erased by anyone. Let us examine this concept from a scientific point of view. Microscopic examination shows innumerable furrows in the grey matter all over the brain. Medical science has not so far come to know the biological implications of these indentations. Comparative

microscopic research studies have shown that density of these crenulations in the grey matter of highly evolved persons and thinkers is much more, than in the case of common masses. It shows that these microscopic lines in the grey matter of the brain are nothing but compact subtle impressions created by external activities, which we take as imprints of mental, vocal and physical actions.

This record of activities (good and evil deeds) on the neurons of grey matter proves the existence of an intelligent mechanism, which Hindu Mythology refers to as the deity Chitragupta. In Sanskrit language too, the word “Chitragupta” means “a hidden picture”. It shows that there exists in the human mind a hidden chamber, an inner sentient mechanism (Antaha Chetana) or a subtle state of consciousness (Sookshma Man). (We may compare it with a back-up file of executable programs in computer parlance). It is well known that the subtle body coexisting with the physical human body has four components:

“Man” (pronounced as Mun)- the source of desires, longings and aspirations; “Buddhi”- the discriminative faculty which deliberates, takes decisions and determines a

course of action; “Chitta”- which stores traits, habits, inclinations and temperament ; “Ahamkar”- the overall personal sense of selfhood (Ego)

It is also established that “Chitta” carries forward its record of good and bad impressions after dissolution of the body. It appears the expression “Chittagupta” of scriptures came to be known as “Chitragupta” in course of time. Hence the internal mechanism of mind, which creates the compact subtle recordings of human activities, could be taken as the deity “Chitragupta” of Hindu mythology. No doubt, this intelligent mechanism (Chitragupta) is continuously engaged in maintaining records of all living beings. Since each being has its own personal Chitragupta and, therefore, for the entire population of animate beings there is an equal number of Chitraguptas. Thus maintenance of records of innumerable beings does not seem to be impossibility. Human mind has an infinite capacity for storage of information. It is quite possible for the subtle sentient mechanism of subconscious mind to maintain a systematic record of activities of a living being. There is also no contradiction in the one Chitragupta of mythology being countless Chitraguptas in innumerable beings. Divine powers of God are omnipresent. The universal life-force-Prana is one, but it is individually present in each living being. Similarly, the subtle celestial elements designated as deities Indra, Varun, Agni, Shiva and Yama in mythology are also all-pervasive. Air, for instance, in spite of being identified as fresh air of a garden or polluted air of an industrial area, is an integral part of the same atmosphere enveloping the earth. Similarly, though inhabiting and operating in numerous bodies independently, the deity Chitragupta is a single universal celestial entity. The agility of our mind flashes innumerable varieties of thoughts and imaginations in the awakened state. Random reflections of similar fluctuations continue in the subconscious state of sleep too and manifest their arbitrary mingling in variegated expressions of dreams in general. Therefore dreams most often appear vague and meaningless. Unfolding the secrets of this free entertainment has been the center of attraction of the inquisitive human mind since the time of yore. Equally important has been the quest for identifying the nature, cause and mode of interpretation of the rare but significant occurrence of meaningful dream.

Decipheration and analysis of dreams constituted an important part of transcendental knowledge in the ancient times. Implications and messages conveyed by dreams were the subject matters of curiosity and concern for the common people in the later ages too. The masters of this discipline of knowledge enjoyed high repute in the society. An Italian scholar named Archaemidoras had written a book on dreams sometime in the second century. The book was entitled “Onirocritica” –– meaning, “Principles of Analyzing Dreams”. Copies of this hand written book were in great demand those days. This was later published in the 15th century. as a fundamental document for many other volumes published on dreams and mental reflections in the later years.

In the early days of modern civilization, people in some parts of the occidental world used to believe that during the state of deep sleep the soul traverses in a ‘new’ world out of the body. The information gathered by it during this visit of the extraterrestrial world is expressed via dreams. So strong was this conviction that waking up someone fast asleep was regarded risky because of the apprehension that his soul may not have returned to his body before its ‘scheduled time’ and so waking him up during this period may amount to his untimely death. Modern psychologists often analyze dreams in terms of mental and bodily conditions. For instance thrust during sleep might be expressed as a dream associated with hunting for rivers or spring of water. If one feels suffocation in a dream or feels as though someone is holding his throat tight and putting pressure on his chest, then he (the dreamer) is

quite likely to suffer from cough, some lung infection or related disorder. Similar to these examples of subconscious effects, the rise in the temperature of semen in a sleeping state often results in dreams pertaining to sexual excitements and might lead to night discharge. In a psychological experiment on dreams two persons were given pens in their hands while sleeping. One of them dreamt of playing hockey and the other was rotating a club in his dream. When cotton piece was moved softly over the palms of three sleeping subjects, one of them felt (in dream) as if he is holding the tail of a cat; another one dreamt of being massaged delicately; the third experienced a dream in which he was patting his daughter’s silky hair. These examples illustrate the diversities of imaginations and almost instantaneous response to sentient experiences of the subconscious mind. Noted psychologist Sigmund Freud had collected authentic information of about 1900 dreams. He had presented the study of the responsive reflections and psychological implications of these dreams in his popular book “Analysis of Dreams”. He concluded that dreams are rhetoric expressions of the unfulfilled desires and suppressed emotions. Ambitions, avarice, lust and worldly desires and expectations of the people have expanded many folds with materialistic civilization, easy access to means of sensual pleasure and comforts coupled with a corresponding rise in aplomb and ego. The suppressed emotions, unfulfilled desires, eagerness of possession and ambitious race in personal and professional life, etc trigger a revolution in the conscious and unconscious domains of mind. Their reactions are expressed and artificially ‘materialized’ in the imaginary world of dreams. clutches of negative impulses of over-ambition, ego, jealously, etc usually get sound sleep and do not experience vague or hazy dreams. Dreams are termed as mirrors reflecting the basic nature and intrinsic tendencies of the individual self. The nature of one’s dreams helps inferring his psychology to some extent. Especially, the roots of intensive influence of fear, lust, ferociousness, aversion, etc, in one’s mind are easily diagnosed by decipheration of his dreams.

There is also a very distinct class of dreams which are hidden reflections of spiritually refined inner self and which express subliminal communications at higher realms of cosmic force. Such dreams are often experienced in the early hours of morning before dawn and are found to be precognitive,

reflections of clairvoyance, or envoys of divine messages. Dreams leading to intuitive discoveries also fall in this category of the supernormal sensing of the unconscious mind.

Incessant Journey of Scientific Investigations - Dr.Pranav Pandya

The rishis – Indian sages of yore - had pioneered this search of truth – reality of Nature, reality of life, its genesis and ultimate evolution – tens of thousands of years ago in the pre-historic times. These visionaries, discoverers and inventors of the science of Nature and Consciousness also used to share their views and research findings in periodic conferences organized in different parts, usually along the banks of major rivers, of ancient India. Here is a sketchy description of one such panel discussion. “The science propounded by the Rishis pertains to decipheration and expression of the power of Nature and truth of the Omniscient Spirit from different angles. It has uncountable dimensions, each interlinked with the other in some respect. Its domain is infinite; there is novelty as well as convergence in each branch, each facet, and each aspect of research in this science. The flow of knowledge is eternal. Hence the path of science will continue forever. Its research will carry on without a pause” – with these opening0remarks, Maharshi Angiras welcomed the august gathering of Maharshis (rishis, who had achieved eminence in their fields of research), Manishis (accomplished scholars) and Brahmacharis (research students). This was a gathering for a special advanced research conference. Almost all Maharshis from across Aryavarta (ancient India) had come there with their scholarly disciples. The venue also was special – panoramic banks of river Saraswati at the feet of the majestic Himalayas. Nurtured by the nectar-like pure water currents of Saraswati, this place, under the serene shades of silvery white Himalayan Mountains was pervaded with immense natural beauty: surrounded by multicolor smiling flowers here and there protected by lush green rows of tall tress standing like alert guards with their heads up in pride of the motherland and natural carpet of soft green grass on the floor. A dense forest was not far off – which reverberated with casual roars of lions and varieties of other loud or melodious musical sounds of cheerful animals in the open air. The “Kasturi” deer found in that region were running around the venue without any fear and thus spreading soothing fragrance everywhere. Being the Ashram of Maharshi Angiras the place was vibrant with spiritual energy. The Maharshi was the organizer of this conference. There were nearly a thousand brilliant participants. Noted amongst invited speakers were Acharya Bharadwaj (son of Brahaspati), Rishi Pragahs, Munivar Vambarish, Maharshi Medhatithi Kanva and Acharya Vasushrut – who used to call himself as “son of the soil”. They were stars of attraction because of their recent findings. They had investigated the science of Nature in a comprehensive way and deciphered novel aspects of its visible and invisible facets. At the end of his welcome address, Maharshi Angiras invited all of them on the dais and requested them to commence the panel discussion highlighting the aims and scope of the conference. Acharya Bhardwaj spoke on the holistic approach of the ancient Indian sages towards scientific research. He said that science as viewed and developed by the rishis pertained to search of truth in an absolute sense and it was not confined only to matter or manifestation of nature, which was perceivable through the sense organs; rather its domains of research encompassed the infinite expanse of Nature, consciousness force and eternal reflections of God.

Science means knowledge and elucidation of truth.

Supporting the views expressed by rishi Bhardwaj, rishi Pragath said that if a research was constrained by a preconception, prejudiced views, it would not be considered scientific, as it would not lead to the search of truth. Truth by its very definition could not be restrained by specific theories or prevailing ideas of contemporary scientists; one should be focused but should not regard that truth could be investigated only in a particular way or that truth was truth only if it could be verified according to some set norms. Such convictions made scientific

motives of research as unscientific, he said. He further said that those who believed that science pertained to only that which could be investigated, experimented or tested, using material means blocked the real pursuit of science. Physical, Chemical or Biological sciences were confined only to the material domains of Nature. These could decipher material elements and energy as long as these could be studied via some instruments. These were confined to perceivable existence of the inanimate and animate manifestations of Nature. These alone would not lead to truth, thus these alone could not be regarded as science. He illustrated his point by elaborative examples in an interesting way. No one would have disagreed with what he said. Munivar Vambarish explained the point more deeply: “Matter or whatever the researchers of the perceivable Nature* regard as elements of creation of matter is only a manifestation of the tamoguna of Nature. The rajoguna generates activity (energy vibrations and vitality) in every element of Nature. The satoguna constitutes what corresponds to the expression and perception of consciousness and its spiritual faculties. Thus, even the science of nature would be incomplete without considering the domains of rajoguna and satoguna. That means that along with the study of matter and energy contained in its elements, scientific research should also encompass the study of Prana (life-force, vital energy), mental and spiritual energies, expressed as well as intrinsic roots of thoughts and emotions, subconscious The Pioneers of Scientific Spirituality and unconscious domains of mind, sublime facets of spirituality and soul-reality.” “This holistic approach is the nucleus of the scientific investigations of our ancient rishis” — Acharya Vasushrut suffixed this sentence as an approval and completion (or complementary) remark to what his predecessor had explained. Continuing further he said: “Considering only on the physical (i.e. within the grasp of sense-organs or instruments) domains of Nature keep one's research trapped in the periphery of matter and limited forms of energies. Pursuit of this kind of science shields the sight of truth. Single-tracked approach cannot lead to the real purpose of science. If the scientists keep aside the prejudices of regarding truth as what the contemporary norms and theories in their field of

specialization suggests and discard the negative approaches of rejecting other (subtler) dimensions of Nature, they would be able to see newer horizons of Nature and may some day succeed in deciphering the ultimate reality of the soul and the supreme spirit (God). The science propounded by the ancient rishis is free of all such limitations; it adopts positive approach to knowledge and research embracing all the visible and invisible, the physical and sublime, the mental and spiritual, expressions of truth beyond the periphery of space and time. This is why their path leads to peace, harmony and welfare of all. Negative approach of material based science* may be misused and lead to destructive developments. A positive or constructive approach makes prudent use of everything in nature for noble purposes. For example, in Ayurveda, every plant may be used for some medicinal preparation. On the contrary, a single tracked materialistic goal-oriented researcher may synthesize an artificial medicine** or may convert a natural product into a toxic** one.” Most importantly, the speaker emphasized that “the science of rishis aims at satyam, shivam, sundaram – it not only leads to the search of truth (satyam), but also to benevolence (shivam) and auspicious bliss (sundaram)”. The host Maharshi Angiras was attentively listening to the discussion; the smile on his face reflected a deep sense of contentment and appreciation in his heart. He suddenly looked at Maharshi Medhatithi Kanva who had been silent till then; he appeared engrossed in some deep thoughts. He was senior-most of the eminent researchers, who had explored and experienced the subtle world inside the atoms and subatomic particles and also the world beyond our three dimensional space. Maharshi Angiras requested him to say a few words on the theme of the panel discussion. The preeminent spiritual scientist said — “Every realm of existence is as real as the world on this earth. As the plants, animals, humans and other creatures and life-forms exist on this earth at different levels of manifested expression of the Omnipresent Consciousness Force; similarly, the yakshas, pitars, devagana, etc exist in subtler realms. The ionosphere and ideosphere of the earth are affected not only by the energy waves of the animate and inanimate creation on the earth, but also by the energy currents in the other realms of existence. This science of our Vedic rishis deals with the study of this interdependence as well. As all the scholarly views presented so far have pointed out, there is no limit of time or space in the investigations of these scientists. After all, their science is holistic. It aims at elucidation of the absolute reality of Creation (Nature) and the Creator (God), all dimensions of their existence and expressions, all realms of evolution of life”. After highlighting this 'satyam' aspect of Rishi-Science, he also reminded the younger researchers of its role as shivam and sundaram by reminding them that the Vedas say – “Vigyan yagya Tanute, karmani Tanute api Cha|” (Meaning - Science protects and nurtures the growth of all yagyas – experiments for global wellbeing and also of all karmas – deeds of happy progress). Indeed, this concluding remark conveys a message that is relevant even today. May these inspirations of the 'Rishi - Science' cultivate spiritual attitude in the modern science too . * Modern science and technology fall under this category. ** Several of the synthetic drugs and antibiotics are of this type.

What are Vedas ?

The Vedas are probably the most misunderstood word that we have in the world today.

Because whenever we hear about the Vedas we always forget the adjective associated with it

– “Apaurusheya” meaning that Vedas are not from human beings. It is not created or

developed by any human being. It is Apaurusheya. Then about the Rishis (sages) who have

written the Vedas, it is said that they are “Mantra Drashta”. So whatever we read in Vedas is

Mantra Drashta – a vision of the seers. It is almost like science. For example the gravitational

force – the Drashta of it is Newton. But Newton has not created the gravitational force. It has

been there in the universe even before Newton discovered it. But what Newton could do was,

he could understand, utilize the force and then we are able to use. And it is with the use of that

force that the whole of physics has developed. But when we talk about the gravitational force

in the language of Newton, then we can say that the mantra Drashta for gravitational force is

Newton. But the force is Apaurusheya. There is nothing human in it. If we can think about

Vedas with this concept in mind, we can understand what great scientific knowledge we have.

It is a literal science in Vedas which we have. But again when we talk about science, we

should remember that we are interpreting what we get from our 5 senses and then make a

theory of it and when that theory is applicable everywhere irrespective of time and space, we

call it a law. What Vedas has given is a process of using Vigyanamaya kosa (wisdom) .
