SPIRITUAL ISRAEL:Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation of Israel?

A large segment of Christianity is being taughtthat God no longer has a plan for physicalIsrael under the New Covenant, and that Heis now working with only a spiritual Israel. Many Christians attempt to use Galatians3:26-29 as justification for this "spiritual Israel"doctrine:

For ye are all the children of God by faithin [the] Christ Jesus.* For as many ofyou as have been baptized into [the]Christ have put on [the] Christ. There isneither Jew nor Greek, there is neitherbond nor free, there is neither male norfemale: for ye are all one in [the] ChristJesus. And if ye be [the] Christ's, thenare ye Abraham's seed, and heirsaccording to the promise. (Galatians3:26-29)**

*Yeshua is the Hebrew spelling of ourSavior's name and is the author's preference. For a more detailed explanation, read ourtract The Sacred Names of God. ** All Scripture quoted from King JamesVersion unless otherwise noted.

Many Judeo-Christian writers conclude thatthe above passage proves that God is nolonger working with physical Israel under theNew Covenant, but only with a spiritual Israel(people from all races of mankind who havebeen saved in Yeshua the Christ). Leonard C.Lee in his book, Clouds Over America, wrote the following concerning physicalIsraelites under the New Covenant:

God rejected the Israelites as a nation. 1

The Israelites have now passed off thestage of action. 2

Their nationality is of no significance in

Page 4: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

the ultimate purposes of God.3

Mr. Lee further concluded:

Since God rejected the Israelites as anation, we can look for the fulfillment ofHis purposes only in spiritual Israel.4

Mr. Lee then attempted to explain how thistakes place, using Galatians 3:26-29 tosupport his claims:

Those [of other races] who are graftedinto Christ, the root, the true vine, willbecome spiritual Israel and will receive allthe blessings and promises made toancient Israel.5

In his book Just Before Dawn, CorneliusVanderbreggen Jr. wrote:

Here [Galatians 3:26-29] are wordsaddressed not to physical descendants of

Page 5: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Abraham, but to saved [non-Israelite]Gentiles. They are informed that becauseof their faith in Jesus Christ they areAbraham's seed. In other words, spiritually they are his descendants or hischildren, for they have believed in thesame One in Whose coming he believed!6

Dr. Ed Moore wrote the following in hisperiodical The Last Trump:

Hence, we can begin to see that beingthe children of Abraham has nothing todo with race.7

Even the Catholics make the same claim. PopePius XI is quoted as saying:

Spiritually, we [anyone of any race whohas come to Christ] are Semites.8

As a minister who once taught this "spiritual

Page 6: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Israel" doctrine, I feel it is imperative to take acloser look at this passage and at thearguments employed by those trying to justifythe teaching of a "spiritual Israel" under theNew Covenant. However, before doing so itshould first be understood that even if thisparticular passage does seem to spiritualizeIsrael, it does not invalidate the sixty or moreNew Testament passages that clearly deal withIsrael on a physical basis.*

*Please refer to Chapter 2 of God'sCovenant People - Yesterday, Today andForever for a list of sixty New Testamentpassages that clearly teach God's NewCoveant plan for physical Israel.

Taking the foregoing into consideration, wecan now ask: "Does this passage spiritualizeIsrael in the sense that many modern-daypreachers and Christians claim?"

Page 7: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Definitions

Those who believe in and teach a "spiritualIsrael" under the New Covenant will find thattheir interpretation of this passage in Galatiansis totally dependent upon their definitions ofthe words "Jew" and "Greek." They assumethe word "Jew" is synonymous with the termIsrael or Israelites - descendants of any or allof the twelve sons of Jacob. They also assumethat the word "Greek," when used in contrastto the word "Jew," means any or all non-Israelites.

IF THEIR DEFINITIONS FOR THESETWO WORDS ARE CORRECT, THENTHEIR INTERPRETATION OF THISPASSAGE IS ALSO CORRECT!

However, it must also be understood that:

Page 8: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

IF THEIR DEFINITIONS FOR THESETWO WORDS ARE INCORRECT, THENTHEY HAVE ARRIVED AT THE WRONGCONCLUSION!

As an example, if your mother had taught youwhen you were a child that a turkey walked onfour legs, had a tail, and said "moo," then morethan likely whenever you spoke of turkeys youwould be making erroneous conclusions basedon the original definitions given to you by yourmother. Initially, it would be difficult toconvince you that your basic understanding ofturkeys was incorrect because your mother(preachers, college professors, denominations, etc.) couldn't be wrong! How much more so ifa whole society had been taught the sameway? However, the number of people, andso-called authorities, who falsely believe andteach a lie does not make it true.

This is exactly the scenario we find ourselves

Page 9: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

in today. Modern-day teachers have taughtthat all Israelites are Jews, and that everyoneelse is either a Gentile or a Greek. However, the commonly accepted definitions of "Jew,""Gentile," and "Greek" are incorrect. Once thecorrect definitions are given, a different light isshed on Galatians 3:26-29 and on theremainder of Scripture as well.

Page 10: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Correct Definitions

JEWS - The Biblical use of the word "Jew(s)"refers to the descendants of the house ofJudah which was composed primarily of thetwo tribes Judah and Benjamin. The word"Jew(s)" never refers to all twelve tribes as awhole or to the ten-tribed house of Israel.*

*For a more exhaustive explanation pleaserefer to Chapter 1 of God's Covenant People- Yesterday, Today and Forever.

GREEKS - For the most part, the word"Greek(s)" is used in the Bible interchangeablywith the word "Gentile(s)" as illustrated in 1Corinthians and several other locations:

For indeed Jews ask for signs, andGreeks search for wisdom; but wepreach [the] Christ crucified, to Jews a

Page 11: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

stumbling block, and to Gentilesfoolishness, but to those who are thecalled, both Jews and Greeks, [the]Christ the power of God and the wisdomof God. (1 Corinthians 1:22-24, NASV)

Consequently, the word "Greek" in Galatians3:28 could be replaced with "Gentile" withoutdoing harm to the intent or meaning ofGalatians 3:26-29.

GENTILES - The word "ethnos," from whichthe word "Gentile(s)" is derived, has at leastfive Biblical applications:

1. Translated "gentiles" - used in reference tonon-Israelites - Acts 7:45.

2. Translated "gentiles" - used in reference toheathens - I Corinthians 12:2.

3. Translated "nations" - used in reference to amultitude of people; specifically the whole

Page 12: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

human race - Acts 17:26.

4. Translated "nation" - used in reference tothe Jewish people, descendants of the houseof Judah - Luke 7:3-5.

5. Translated "Gentiles" - used in reference toIsraelites, descendants of the house of Israel.Romans 9:24.*

*For a more exhaustive explanation pleaserefer to Chapter 1 of God's Covenant People- Yesterday ,Today and Forever.

As can be seen, there is more than onepossible application for the word "ethnos." Itcan refer to either Israelites or non-Israelitegentiles. It is foolish, if not dishonest, foranyone to randomly select the interpretationwhich happens to suit his doctrinal positionand apply it to a particular passage. Thecontext must be taken into consideration and

Page 13: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

studied to determine which of theinterpretations is the correct application.

Page 14: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

The Context of Galatians

So what does the context of Galatians tell usabout these Greeks or Gentiles? We shouldbegin by asking: "To whom was the book ofGalatians written?"

Paul, an apostle ... and all the brethrenwhich are with me, unto the churches ofGalatia. (Galatians 1:1-2)

With the understanding that the word "church"means those "called out" or "saved in Yeshua,"it is obvious that the Apostle Paul wasaddressing this epistle to those of Galatia whohad responded to the call of salvation. Wemust now ask, "Who were these Galatianswho responded to the gospel?" If we turn tothe first epistle written by the Apostle Peter wefind an important clue in answering this secondquestion:

Page 15: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Peter, an apostle of Jesus [the] Christ, tothe strangers scattered throughoutPontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, andBithynia.... (1 Peter 1:1)

The phrase "strangers scattered" is alsorendered "sojourners of the dispersion," 9"Israelite resident(s) in Gentile countries," 10and is the same Greek noun as found in James1:1:

James, a servant of God and of the LordJesus [the] Christ, to the twelve tribeswhich are scattered [dispersed,NASV] abroad, greeting.

With this understanding, 1 Peter 1:1 can beinterpreted and understood to say:

Peter ... to the strangers, Israelites ofthe dispersion scattered throughoutPontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and

Page 16: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Bithynia....

Many of the Israelites, after being takencaptive by the Assyrians, migrated and madetheir residence in the country of Galatia. TheseIsraelites were some of the people Peteraddressed in his first epistle. Thus it would besafe to say that when the Apostle Paul, whowas contemporary with the Apostle Peter, wrote to those in Galatia, he was writing tosome of these same people. This, alone, doesnot prove that the "Greeks" mentioned inGalatians 3:28 were Israelite Gentiles, but itcertainly deserves consideration in our attemptto discover their identity. Let us now examinethe context of Galatians 3:

Know ye therefore that they which are offaith, the same are the children ofAbraham. (Galatians 3:7)

This verse is also often quoted in an attempt to

Page 17: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

spiritualize Israel in the New Testament. Butthis verse taken alone as it is translated in ourmodern English versions of the Bible does notsupport the concept that Israel is merelyspiritual. If the word "they" spoken of in thisverse refers to non-Israelite Gentiles, then onemust conclude that the children of Abrahamare spiritual children rather than physicalchildren. On the other hand, if the word"they" refers to literal Israelites from either thehouse of Judah or the house of Israel, then onemust conclude that only those physicalIsraelites who are of faith are to be consideredtrue children of Abraham. The remainingphysical Israelites would be an anathema, justas the house of Israel had become when Goddivorced her (Jeremiah 3:8; etc.) at an earliertime in her history.

Nothing can be proven by proponents ofeither position using this verse as it is translatedin most of our modern-day English versions.

Page 18: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

However, if one takes a look at TheInterlinear Greek-English New Testamentby Pastor Alfred Marshall, another clue isprovided which helps determine the correctinterpretation:

Know ye then that the [ones] of faith, these sons are of Abraham.11 (Galatians3:7)

In other words, those who are alreadyphysical sons (Israelites) and who are of faithare reckoned as being truly "of Abraham."

We find a similar expression in 1 Peter 3which acts as an additional witness:

Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling himlord, and you have become her children ifyou do what is right without beingfrightened by any fear. (1 Peter 3:6,NASV)

Page 19: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Peter wrote his first epistle to Israelites of thedispersion; consequently, verse 6 can beinterpreted and understood to say:

...you [who are the physical daughters ofSarah] have [truly] become her children ifyou do what is right without beingfrightened by any fear. (1 Peter 3:6)

Even when using the literal translation ofGalatians 3:7 we are not provided enoughevidence to determine the correct applicationfor the word "Greek" in verse 28. Therefore, further study in Galatians 3 is necessary:

But before faith came, we were keptunder the law, shut up unto the faithwhich should afterwards be revealed.Wherefore the Law was ourschoolmaster to bring us unto [the]Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no

Page 20: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

longer under a schoolmaster. (Galatians3:23-25)

Who are the "we" whom Paul is addressing inthese verses? Clearly they are the same peopleas the "ye" (you) whom he addresses in verses26 and 27:

For ye are all the children of God byfaith in [the] Christ Jesus. For as many ofyou as have been baptized into [the]Christ have put on [the] Christ.(Galatians 3:26-27)

The "ye" in verses 26 and 27 is represented aseither "Jew" or "Greek" in verse 28; thus wecan safely conclude that the "we" of verses 23-25 are both Jews and Greeks. Paul describedthose people, who are both Jews and Greeks,as being "under the law." Which people hadbeen given the law or were considered underthe law? This description fits only one group of

Page 21: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

people - Israel. Consider carefully theScriptures quoted below:

Moses commanded us a law, eventhe inheritance [possession, NASV] ofthe congregation of Jacob.(Deuteronomy 33:4)

For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, whichHe commanded our fathers, that theyshould make them known to theirchildren. (Psalm 78:5)

...who are Israelites, to whompertaineth [belongs, NASV] theadoption, and the glory, and thecovenants, and the giving of the law,and the service of God, and thepromises. (Romans 9:4)

Those Scriptures plainly teach what every

Page 22: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

preacher across this land already knows: theLaw was given to the Israelites, it belonged tothem, and they were under its requirements. Itnot only was given to the Israelites as theirpossession, it was given exclusively toIsraelites as their possession. Thisexclusiveness is made clear in the followingpassage:

He sheweth his words to Jacob, hisstatutes and his judgments ["laws,"Moffatt translation], unto Israel. Hehath not dealt so with any nation; andas for his judgments ["commands,"Moffatt translation], they have notknown them. Praise Yah! (Psalm147:19-20)

This irrefutable evidence correctly identifies the"Greek(s)" of Galatians 3:28. They can be noone else but Israelite Gentiles. Let us look atfurther evidence which confirms this

Page 23: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

conclusion. In our examination of the contextthus far, we have reviewed the three versesimmediately preceding the passage in question.Let us now examine the five verses whichimmediately follow it:

Now I say, that the heir, as long as he isa child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; but is undertutors and governors until the timeappointed of the father. Even so we,when we were children, were in bondageunder the elements of the world: butwhen the fulness of the time was come,God sent forth his son, made of awoman, made under the law, to redeemthem that were under the law, that wemight receive the adoption as sons.(Galatians 4:1-5)

We are provided with three clues in thispassage. "Under the law" is the first clue

Page 24: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

which has already been reviewed from verses23-25.

The second clue is uncovered when we aretold that Yeshua came to "REDEEM themthat were under the law." Notice it saysnothing about redeeming those who were notunder the Law. Why not? Why would Yeshuanot want to redeem non-Israelites as well?Simply put, He could not! He could purchasethem, but He could not redeem them. Thereason is simple when one understands that theword "redeem" means to "buy back". Onlypeople who had once been the possession ofYahweh could be bought back or redeemed.Which people had previously been Yahweh'spossession?

"... 'Now therefore, if ye will obey my[Yahweh's] voice indeed, and keep mycovenant, then ye shall be a peculiartreasure [possession, NASV] unto me

Page 25: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

above all people; for all the earth is mine;and ye shall be unto me a kingdom ofpriests, and an holy nation. These are thewords which thou shalt speak unto thechildren of Israel." (Exodus 19:5-6)

For thou [Israel, see Deuteronomy 6:4]art an holy people unto YHWH thy God;YHWH thy God hath chosen thee to bea special people unto himself [apeople for His own possession, NASV],above all people that are upon theface of the earth. (Deuteronomy 7:6)

It is quite clear, only Israelites had been the"possession" of Yahweh, and only Israeliteswho had subsequently been divorced andrejected by Yahweh could be bought back orredeemed by Yahweh. Both Old and NewTestaments attest to the accuracy of thesestatements:

Page 26: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

"And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn fromtransgression in Jacob, saith YHWH.(Isaiah 59:20)

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, forhe hath visited and redeemed hispeople. (Luke 1:68)

But we [the two on the road to Emmauswith Yeshua after His resurrection]trusted that it had been he [Yeshua]which should have redeemed Israel.(Luke 24:21)

Once again we have evidence which points usto the correct choice in identifying the"Greeks" spoken of in Galatians 3. They mustbe Israelite Gentiles because only Israelitescould be redeemed by Yeshua.

The third clue is found in the word "adoption."

Page 27: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

To whom do the Scriptures say the adoptionbelongs?

Who are Israelites, to whompertaineth [belongs, NASV] theadoption, and the glory, and thecovenants, and the giving of the law, andservice of God, and the promises.(Romans 9:4)

It is conceded that this verse does notharmonize with what many Christians havebeen taught concerning the adoption, i.e., thatanyone of any race can receive the adoption. However, I hope that you are honest enoughto lay aside any previously heldmisconceptions and to accept what theApostle Paul clearly teaches. With thisevidence from Romans 9:4, only oneconclusion can be drawn concerning theidentity of the Gentiles (Greeks) in Galatians 3- they are Israelites to whom "belongs the

Page 28: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

adoption."

The context of Galatians 3 helps us tocorrectly identify the Gentiles as Israelites. Thisconclusion is supported by the Apostle John:

The Jews therefore said to one another,"Where does this man intend to go thatwe shall not find him? He is not intendingto go to the dispersion ["Israeliteresident(s) in Gentile countries." Strong'sExhaustive Concordance] among theGreeks, and teach the Greeks, is He?"(John 7:35, NASV)

In addition to the previous three clues, note theemphasis placed on the words "if" and "then"in verse 29 of Galatians 3:

And if ye be [the] Christ's, then are yeAbraham's seed, and heirs according tothe promise. (Galatians 3:29)

Page 29: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Keeping in mind what we have alreadydiscovered, we can understand this verse tosay: "Only Israelites (either Jews or Gentiles)in the Christ are reckoned as truedescendants of Abraham." In other words,Paul was dealing with Jewish [Judahite]Israelites who were under the misconceptionthat simply being a physical descendant was allthat was necessary to be considered an heir ofthe promises. In contrast, Paul is pointing outthat physical descent alone is not enough underthe New Covenant. Physical descendants areonly considered "heirs according to thepromise" if they are also spiritual sons ofAbraham through salvation in Yeshua theChrist.

This is not to say that people of other racescould not and cannot become proselytes to thecovenants which belong to the Israelites(Isaiah 56:3-7, etc.) and thus receive benefitsderived from those Covenants. However, one

Page 30: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

does not have to distort Galatians 3:26-29 inorder to prove that point.

In conclusion, Paul once again states:

For ye are all the children of God by faithin [the] Christ Jesus.... (Galatians 3:26)

The "ye" (you) in verse 26 is identified in verse28 as being:

1) "Jews" who are descendants from thehouse of Judah, and

2) "Greeks" who (in this context) aredescendants of the house of Israel whohad been under the Law, divorced byGod, and dispersed to Galatia whomYeshua came to redeem and to whombelonged the adoption.

Page 31: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Does This Passage SpiritualizeIsrael?

It certainly does, but not in the sense that somany today are claiming. This passagedeclares that only Abraham's physicaldescendants, who have become spiritualdescendants through salvation in Yeshua theChrist can be considered true descendants ofAbraham. 12

Romans 2:28-29 & Romans 9:6

Two other passages are often used in theattempt to make Israel in the New Testamenta "spiritual" group of people from all raceswho have been saved in Yeshua. Each of themwill be examined briefly:

Romans 2:28-29

Page 32: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

For he is not a Jew, which is oneoutwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is aJew, which is one inwardly; andcircumcision is that of the heart, in theSpirit, and not in the letter; whose praiseis not of men, but of God.

The Apostle Paul is simply addressing Jews(Judahites) who have the same erroneousoutlook as previously described in our study ofGalatians 3. These Jews assumed that physicaldescent alone was enough. Paul is notdeclaring to non-Israelites that they canspiritually become "Jews"; instead he isdeclaring to Jews that unless they (asIsraelites) are circumcised of the heart (savedin Yeshua the Christ) they are not to bereckoned as true Jews or Judahites at all.

Keep in mind that even if Paul wereaddressing this to Gentiles, he identifies the

Page 33: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Gentiles in Romans 9:24-26 as Israelites(descendants from the house of Israel).

Romans 9:6

Not as though the word of God hathtaken none effect. For they are not allIsrael, which are of Israel.

There are two ways in which this verse byitself can be interpreted:

1. "Israel" is comprised of more than justphysical Israelites.2. Not all physical Israelites areconsidered Israel.

NoteOption 1 implies inclusion, an addition ofpeople. Option 2 implies exclusion, a subtraction ofpeople.

Page 34: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

Since we have two possible options forinterpreting this verse, we must allow thecontext to be the determinant in choosing thecorrect interpretation. Does the context implyan inclusion or an exclusion? Read the verseswhich immediately follow verse 6, and itbecomes abundantly clear that Apostle Paul'sintent was an exclusion.

First, the physical line of Ishmael is excluded(verse 7-9). Next, the physical line of Esau isexcluded (verses 10-13). Verses 14-22explain God's sovereign right to do this. Next, the majority of Israelites from both the houseof Judah and from the house of Israel are alsoexcluded (verses 23-27).

The Apostle Paul's point in writing verses 6-26was to illustrate that only a remnant of all Israel(from both the house of Judah and the houseof Israel) will be saved (verse 27). Not allphysical Israelites are considered true Israel in

Page 35: Spiritual Israel: Out of All Nations or Out of the Nation

God's sight. This conclusion harmonizescompletely with what we have alreadydiscovered from Galatians 3:26-29 andRomans 2:28-29.13
