The moral development of pupils is shown by their:

ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives, recognise legal boundaries and, in so doing, respect the civil and criminal law of England

understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions

interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues.

BFL System: Behaviour management system is underpinned

by rewards. System supports students to recognise and adapt inappropriate behaviour.

SMSC Lesson Programme: During PSHE and Citizenship lessons, we

ensure students have a clear understanding of the legal system and its relevance to them.

PSHE Lessons within SMSC Lesson Programme: Regular reviews of PSHE ensure it addresses the moral development of students and reflects the

views of students and current DfE guidance.

Big Questions: Across the curriculum, we encourage staff to pose

‘Big Questions’ and this is supported by the Thought for the Week and assembly programmes.

The social development of pupils:

Whilst the promotion of British values permeates through all elements of SMSC

development, it is of particular importance here:

Advanced Thinking School: Habits of Mind supports the development of key social skills including the ability to listen

with empathy to others.

Educational Visits: Each year, a large number of educational visits

take place and many of these support the social development of students.

External Visitors: Notably representatives of many faiths during

Inter-Faith Week and external speakers to support the SMSC lesson programme.

Student Voice: A range of opportunities such as Head

Boy/Girl elections, operation of the Student Voice Panel, interview involvement, etc.

External Opportunities: Longstanding link with National Citizenship

Service for Y11 students and developing links with groups such as the Youth Parliament.

Charitable Giving: School supports charitable giving and

supporting students to have the opportunities to take the lead in this process.

Assemblies and Thoughts: Opportunities for students to engage

meaningfully with topical issues that support the development of British values.

Whilst only one aspect of the SMSC development of our students, the importance of PSHE, careers and citizenship lessons to the

SMSC development of our students is signalled by the fact that the timetable slot is labelled as SMSC.

These lessons help to prepare students to play a full part in society after leaving SCC – careers education and citizenship programme.

These lessons help to provide students with the knowledge that they need to live their lives successfully – understanding of society, economic well-being, etc.

The programme of SMSC lessons prepares our students to live healthy lives both now and in the future and provides them with the support they need to make

well-informed choices relating to all elements of their personal well-being. Whilst there is no linear exam, for some of our students, PSHE lessons are their most relevant and valuable lesson of a fortnight. Many students rely on these

lessons to identify how to access support for the real issues in their lives.
