I would like to thank my predecessor, P/C Dennis Raetzel. He did an

outstanding job as our Commander last year and leaves the Squadron

in an excellent position for continued success in the future.

The COW was a perfect evening we are especially excited with the

number of members who attended. Thanks to P/C Judy LaPorte,

COW Chairperson and her committee who did an outstanding jobplanning and making the necessary arrangements for our very suc-

cessful Back to Basics Change of Watch.

This year we will focus on Back to Basics. One of our goals will be to

get all of our members involved in the various activities of our Squad-

ron. To accomplish this, we are planning a few new things such as

dinghy rendezvous, one day rendezvous to actively involve our day

boaters, and BBQs on the river at headquarters.

Our Squadron is successful and continues to grow because of our

members and their willingness to volunteer. If you arent actively in-volved, we encourage you to do so. For those who are, I thank you

and ask you to continue the great work.

I look forward to an exciting year and serving as your Commander.

    Follow us on Sail Angle

Boating is fun, well show you how!

ABC3 Class Demographics:ABC3 Class Demographics:ABC3 Class Demographics:ABC3 Class Demographics: During the January General Membership Meeting I was asked about marketingthe ABC3 class and what was the most productive method of advertising. I researched the current class andthe Spring of 2010 for the information. The following is what I found:

It appears from the data taken from the last two America's Boating Course that the majority of those takingthe class are males. The women were mainly the spouses but several were taking it on their own or broughta daughter with them. The average age was 51. The boating experience brought to the class brought into

the class was broad but generally around two and three years. The majority taking the classes had less thaneight years boating experience. Most were outboard powered and in the 16 to 25 foot range and trailera-ble. In a recent Marine Safety Alert, the Coast Guard identified a potential hazard that could prevent proper don-ning of some Type I (offshore) personal flotation devices in an emergency.

In affected models, the chest strap was incorrectly threaded through the fixed D-ring that the strap should clipto when worn. Instead of the strap falling away, the clip end of the strap could snag in the D-ring, preventingthe wearer from wrapping it around him- or herself.

PFDs known to be affected are Kent Adult Model 8830Kent Adult Model 8830Kent Adult Model 8830Kent Adult Model 8830 (USCG Approval Number 160.055/184/0) in Lot 53Wmanufactured in October 2006 and Kent Child Model 8820Kent Child Model 8820Kent Child Model 8820Kent Child Model 8820 (USCG Approval Number 160.055/150/0) in Lot012T manufactured in March 2008.

The Coast Guard strongly recommends that all life jackets be checked for proper strap routing. Completelyunwrap the primary strap to ensure it is free and adjustable. The strap must not be threaded through the fixedD-ring.

If routing is satisfactory, wrap the strap around the life jacket and clip it to the fixed D-ring for storage. If the

strap is incorrectly threaded through the fixed D-ring, carefully remove the snap hook assembly from thestrap, pull the strap out of the fixed D-ring, and reattach the snap hook assembly.

As part of general preventive maintenance, vessel owners and operators are encouraged to verify that theirPFDs are in fully serviceable condition by inspecting the straps, components, fabric and flotation material. Re-place PFDs with significant deterioration or poorly functioning hardware. United States Coast Guard

Communication is the foundation of all successful organizations, companies and relationships.

A couple of years ago National USPS began development of SailAngle.a platform for commu-

nication between its members, Squadrons, Districts and the National organization. SailAngle isSailAngle isSailAngle isSailAngle is

the futurethe futurethe futurethe future. It is not Facebook. It is a means of communication between us all. A way of us all

being on the same page, of us all working toward the same goal.

I am going to persuade the new Commander to create a new position (in my dreams I still have

a little pull) of Communications Officer. It comes with the title of Lieutenant and a lot of hard

work. Were looking for a nerd, techie and someone who has the ability to learn SailAngleand the patience to teach the rest of us. If youre interested or know of someone who fits the

    bill..let me know.

Meanwhile Ill do the best I can to get us started. Please in the next few days..log on to

SailAngle.com..log on as a USPS member and complete your activation.then browse

around..it is a great site. If you have a problemat the March 13th

    (2nd

    Sunday) at 3:00 pm (an

hour early) Ill be there to help you. Bring your laptop/or computer and well get you going.

Pete Jones has arranged the April General Membership meeting at China Lite, this year we are

getting Back to Basics. that would be a lot of eating, drinking and having a good time. Who

better than Pete to plan that for us? See Petes article in this Splash.

I look forward to an exciting year and serving as your Administrative Officer.

Seaworthy Magazine: Why Boats Catch Fire pt4

    Continued from Dec. 2010

One problem with a fire aboard a boat is that unlike a house where running across the street to es-

cape the flames is an option, on a boat theres no place to go but overboard. Unfortunately, this vio-

lates the second rule of boating: Stay with the boat. Ironically, if enough of what the boat is floating

on can be brought into the boat, the fire can usually be put out. This, however, violates the first law

of boating: Keep the water outside the boat.

Obviously, stopping fires from getting started in the first place is the best defense. Fortunately, the

best source for learning how to prevent fires is right here at Seaworthyour Marine Insurance claim

files. The files contain hundreds of fire-related claims which Seaworthy editors have spent many
