Convert Units of Capacity

Refer to the information in the Key Concept: Customary Units of Capacity. Three gallons of juice were served at a class picnic. How many quarts of juice is 3 gallons?

Answer: So, 3 gallons of juice is equal to 3 × 4 or 12 quarts.

Larger units (gallons) are being converted to smaller units (quarts).

Since 1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts (qt), multiply 3 by 4.

3 gal = qt
