THE RESPONSE TO INFECTION CONTROL

Every year, 1.7 million Americans are infected and 100,000 die as a result of hospital

acquired infections also known as nosocomial infections.

MAKING CHANGE

• Given this sobering statistic, Spectrum Health Hospital Group in Grand Rapids, Michigan set out on a campaign to transform their organization, starting with improving hand hygiene compliance amongst its hospital group.

IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM

• In order to accomplish this, Spectrum needed to influence a number of people across the organization. Working with VitalSmarts, Spectrum identified three vital behaviors that would drive the change:

3 VITAL BEHAVIORS1. Get people to take responsibility for their own actions and behaviors

and to focus on things that are most important.

2. Create an environment where people feel safe talking about the things that matter most.

3. Implement a holistic approach to accountability.

The practice of applying natural methods

of wellness and treatments for the mind,

body and spirit.

Characterized by comprehension of the

parts of something as intimately interconnected and

explicable only by reference to the whole.

APPLIED PRACTICE

• Using the Influencer model and implementing multiple sources of influence to overcome entrenched behaviors, Spectrum was able to achieve 96% hand hygiene compliance across the organization within 3 months!

• Your team must create an initiative that addresses the reduction of transmissible disease and illness.

IN THE FIELD• Look around your school and evaluate potential sites

where you can have a positive impact on discouraging or eliminating infectious transmission.

CREATE SOLUTIONS

• How would you change the present system?

• What specific measures would you take to improve the protocol?

• How would you sustain your efforts?

• Be prepared to present your ideas!

• Teams will compete for a contract.

BE NO LESS THAN A PROFESSIONAL

• You must carry yourself as a consultant whose purpose is to create solutions for your client. (Me)

• Your tone must be BUSINESS class.

• Voices must be professional!

• No incidental stories or side conversations.

• Questions must be asked by addressing your client clearly and with proper voice and careful selection of words.

WHEN YOU RETURN

• Mobilize your team.

• Discuss what you observed.

• Identify opportunities to improve the present model.

• Create a business proposal worthy of showing to the principal and The Board of Education.

YOUR PLAN SHOULD INCLUDE:

1. Identification of the problem

2. Statements from professionals/authorities that support your hypothesis or idea(s).

3. Your proposal, including data, financial information etc…

4. Evidence of anything that you produced for consumption, display, learning or other means to change behaviors or systems.

5. A detailed solution for the problem.
