‘Tintin in the Land of the Soviets’ was the first comic album that was published from 1929 to 1930. Tintin was introduced as one of the top reporters of ‘Le Petit Vingtième’. This was the only comic of the 24 albums that showed Tintin preparing an article for the newspaper.

‘The Adventures of Tintin’ exhibition was officially opened by His Excellency Roland

D. A. Van Remoortele, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Royal Embassy of Belgium on 4 November 2011.

Tintin is the young reporter in ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ series of comic albums created by famous Belgian comic artist Georges Remi, also known as Hergé. The exhibition celebrates the works of Hergé, explores the influences in his work and career, and the development of characters in the comic series. The exhibition features the full range of Tintin postage stamps issued by Belgium, France and the Netherlands from the Permanent Collection of the Singapore Philatelic Museum. Rarely seen original stamp artworks, colour trials, and other philatelic materials from the Museum Voor Communicatie in the Netherlands and L’Adresse Musée de La Poste in France are on display for the first time in Singapore. In addition, fans can look forward to a display of Tintin comics and collectibles. The exhibition coincides with Singapore’s release of ‘The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn’ animated movie on 10 November 2011.

Tintin and his faithful dog companion, Snowy, began their adventures in 1929. The adventures featured in 24 comics, took them to various places in the world. These include India, Tibet and China in Asia, Congo in Africa, Arabia in the Middle East, Russia in Europe, North and South America, and even the Moon! Over 200 million of the comics have been sold worldwide. They have been translated into more than 100 languages, including Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Malay, Thai and Arabic.

NAMING CEREMONY

‘In this immense universe and at times, lonely planet, Man is fortunate to have living creatures accompanying us. The Elephant is one such special example. Like us, elephants can see, hear, smell, taste and feel. They are truly magical animals. The Philatelic Museum and I want to send this message: ‘Let us work together to ensure the future well-being of the Asian Elephant’. We use postage stamps to dress Baby Emily up because stamps have helped Man to communicate for centuries. I use dots and lines as the basic elements and a set of Universal Grammar as string rules to produce a resplendent web that envelops Baby Emily, like a coat that protects her. It also represents our hope of spreading the message of caring for the elephants…far and wide to all corners of the world.’

This exhibition is held in conjunction with Elephant Parade Singapore 2011, one of the largest outdoor open-air art exhibitions that supports the conservation of the Asian elephants.

At SPM from now until 6 January 2012, visitors can view an elephant uniquely designed with postage stamps. This has been created by Mr Sun Yu-li, a local sculptor and artist.

ELEPHANT STAMPEDE11 November 2011 – 15 January 2012

Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) has organised an elephant-themed stamp exhibition that traces the evolution of mammoths to elephants, the shrinking of elephant habitats, and factors that have caused the reduction in elephant populations. Visitors can engage in interactive exhibits to differentiate African and Asian elephants, as well as learn fun facts about elephants. The exhibition highlights the symbolism, meaning and significance of elephants in Asia, and concludes with what humans should do to help the Asian elephants. In addition, a collection of elephant skull, tusk, and molar is on loan from the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, National University of Singapore.

The National Stamp Collecting Competition prize presentation ceremony was held at the National Library on 3 September 2011. Guest-of-Honour, Mr Edmund Chen, Singapore Post Stamp Ambassador, graced the event.

Amidst the bustle of activities happening at The Plaza, students and teachers viewed rows and rows of participants’ works, performers from Yishun Primary School and Holy Innocents’ High School entertained the audience while collectors picked up philatelic merchandise from stamp dealers.

This year, the annual stamp competition drew more than 750 participants from 11 primary schools, 16 secondary schools, and tertiary institutions. Participants were required to select and research on a topic of their choice, and present their findings using a variety of philatelic materials. Judges commented that they enjoyed looking at the exhibits as the standards continued to rise and that participants had caught onto the idea that displaying philatelic materials required a good knowledge of the products as well as being able to present their thoughts in a concise and precise manner.

Our heartfelt wishes go to the following Champions: The Best Youth Exhibit Challenge Shield – Gregory Quek, Secondary School Champions – Holy Innocents’ High School and Primary School Champions – Yishun Primary School.

Hands-on workshops for NSCC 2012 will begin in January. Teachers can sign up their students for the workshop. For more details, please contact Lily Samuel at 6513 7347 or [email protected]
