Expect Spokane to feel a little like Italy this summer. The internationally acclaimed exhibit Leonardo da Vinci: Man-Inventor-Genius celebrating the transformational work of the Italian Renaissance master takes over the entire 11,000 square-foot Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture.

Considered one of the greatest geniuses the world has ever known, da Vinci was proficient in all areas of art, science, engineering and music. Almost 500 years after his death, his ingenuity still shows that he was a man ahead of his time. The

exhibition reveals how da Vinci demonstrated his brilliance by mastering diverse subjects and fusing them together through observation, insight and inspiration.

Flying machines, robots, submarines, underwater breathing gear and solar powered devices designed by da Vinci come to life as models meticulously constructed by the Italian artisan family that has been building the inventions to da Vinci specifications for two centuries.

The sixty models include interactive inventions and machines designed for flight, war, mechanics and hydraulics.

Models are only the beginning. Twenty-three reproductions of his artistic masterpieces including The Last Supper and Mona Lisa are also featured. The made-to-scale paintings are presented with films of da Vinci’s life, an audio video guide and recorded music composed by da Vinci. It’s a rare opportunity to see reproductions of da Vinci’s paintings together in the same place, and to consider how the art reflects his love of science and nature.

Five centuries after his death, da Vinci’s work as a painter, sculptor, architect, art historian, natural scientist, writer and investor still impresses.

This exhibit has been hosted by museums in Chicago, Seattle, Houston, Detroit, Fort Worth and Montreal, Quebec. More than 40,000 visitors are expected to Experience Genius at the MAC this summer.

The Leonardo da Vinci: Man – Inventor Genius tour is organized by EMS Vienna and distributed by Exhibits Development Group. Locally it is made possible through many generous sponsors.

There is nothing more enjoyable than taking a walk across a newly mown lawn on a crisp summer morning when the sun is just showing its head and the dew is rising up in your face as it warms and dries. The person that came up with the quote, “golf is a good walk spoiled” must have been thinking about golf courses in the Northwest.

We are lucky enough to be home to some of the best public golf courses in the nation and with the local prices, well it’s just unbeatable. I was originally going to write this article about my favorite course here in the Spokane area, but instead I decided to write about my favorite holes at each course instead. Needless to say, each local course has attributes and faults, so finding one course that is a favorite is tough. I personally like a wide variety of golf which we can get right here in this area, but my favorite course would have to be a combination of holes from all of the courses. So here they are in no specific order.

Let’s start on the west plains and Fairways Golf Course. A nice

track that can be very challenging in the wind, which almost always blows there; but no more challenging hole than the 13th, a medium little par 3 that spans a pond from tee to green. I’ve seen a lot of balls go into that pond which is probably full of them, mine included. I’ve actually hit a ball from atop the frozen pond one year, something I wouldn’t recommend, but it actually turned out well. I was able to make a birdie on the 14th hole, a winding par 5. (That’s the hole I was playing at the time so don’t ask how I got on the pond to begin with.)

The Creek at Qualchan is a favorite for some but personally I

think there are a few holes that just didn’t fit. However, the 3rd hole is a nice size par 5 that has water on both sides. You need to keep it straight in the fairway but the green is big enough to hit from a distance. I also really like both par 5’s on the back 9. Both require a big drive off the tee to make any shot at the green. The 18th is a love/hate situation with me. Even with a good drive I’ve been known to hit a few in the creek on my 2nd, 4th and 6th shots.

Hangman is a track I’ve played a lot due to living next to the course at one time. (Remember the Hangman Hills fire? I was there watching it and putting out flames until I realized it was starting to surround me. Yikes!) I love to stand on the 5th tee and take in the view, knowing it’s going to take a few shots to get down the hill to the large sloped green but this is a hole you just grip it and rip it. No holds barred with this. The 16th tee is similar and has just as good a view but you need to use caution as the opening is a little less forgiving.

Downriver has always been close to my heart. Like so many of us living on the north side, it’s the course we learned to play on. The 1st hole is a great starting hole with the big dogleg left and trees lining both sides of the fairway. It’s easy to birdie of triple bogey and can set the tone for the round. However, the 18th is more fun to watch other people play. I’ve seen people hit cars, hit the parking lot, hit houses (don’t ask), and hit the club house. Coming up those 2 hills to the green that slopes back down can be very intimidating and very entertaining at the same time.

Sun Dance Golf Course doesn’t get nearly the credit it deserves.

The greens are always in great shape and the rough is something to avoid. This is a great course to walk as it’s fairly level all the way around. My favorite hole here is the 13th. Not because it is difficult or easy but because I watched my cousin, in his 3rd time playing EVER, hit a worm burner up the middle and drained it for a hole in one! Someday it’ll be my turn. He did buy drinks for the group and a few others.

Wandermere is one of those courses that is great fun to play in a scramble format. Coming up to the 18th green from a blind shot in the fairway to see where your ball landed and to see all your friends heckling you from the clubhouse patio. Now that’s what a scramble is all about!

If you like tough par 3’s check out Esmeralda Golf Course or “Easy Ezzy” as it’s called. Another great course to walk if it weren’t for the 12th hole which is straight uphill. That also means it’s straight downhill tee to green. (One of those tough par 3’s I was mentioning.) My favorite hole on the course though is the 11th. A par 4 dogleg right that has a great risk/reward feature. Cut the corner and you’re golden. Miss the corner and rack up a few strokes.

One of my favorite all around courses is MeadowWood in Liberty Lake. Hazards everywhere and a lot of water. I really like the 3rd hole, a short par 4 with traps in your landing area and water around the green. What could be better! Then there’s the 7th hole, a nice par 5 dogleg left, but if you can hit one over the bunkers on your drive and roll down the back side, reaching the green is much easier. It’s the only hole I rimmed out a double eagle. 3 inches tap=in for eagle wasn’t bad either.

Now the Liberty Lake course was under construction and re-opened last year but I didn’t get a chance to play it. I’m looking forward to trying it this year and finding a new favorite hole on that track as well.

In Post Falls you’ll find one of the only true links style courses around and aptly named The Links. It gives you a good idea of what playing in Scotland might be like, windy, open, rolling mounds, rough that looks like pasture land and great views all around. My favorite hole though is a par 6 that will kick your ass. It’s the only par 6 in the region that I’m aware of, but it’s worth the challenge. At 640 yards from the blue tees (777 from the black), you can boom a tee shot and you’re still close to 400 out. If the wind is blowing at you, plan on a big number.

Prairie Falls is another great place for a scramble but I really like playing the 1st and the 9th holes. The 1st is a short little dogleg right but if you are gutsy enough to cut one over the cemetery, you may be putting for eagle. I haven’t hit the green yet but I keep trying especially in a scramble. However, when playing my own ball, I’m not quite that aggressive. Then the 9th hole is a par 5 that takes you both ways and you’re not sure where to hit your tee shot.

The Highlands has another great starting hole and one of the best practice facilities around. This is one of my favorite practice areas due to hitting off of grass instead of mats and a number of targets. And it’s close to the club house. But their first hole is another par 5, (what can I say, I like par 5’s), with a slight bend to the left and nice risk/reward for longer hitters. There’s a pond in front of the tee and in front of the green to round out the experience. It’s just a cool hole.

Circling Raven has a great layout but I haven’t played it enough to get a feel for a favorite hole yet. Maybe I’ll get invited to play more this year and find one. I do know I hit a few balls OB on the 9th hole my last visit. I think they still owe me a sleeve! Another great practice facility that I shouldn’t overlook.

And what favorite hole article would be complete without mentioning the floating green at the Coeur d’Alene Resort? It’s not a terribly challenging hole unless the wind is blowing hard, which on the lake it can be, but it’s the whole experience of it. The green is so big it’s hard to miss, but taking the boat ride to the green from the tee box is well worth the trip.

Now, I know I left out a lot of great golf courses in this article but they only gave me a couple of pages and I had to pick and choose my favorites. So what about Indian Canyon you might be asking yourself. I saved Indian Canyon for last because after a round of golf, there is no better place to sit and look at a great view of the city than the club house at Indian Canyon. If I could be buried on a golf course, that is where I would want to be. Right above the 1st and 10th tee boxes watching all the frustrated golfers hacking their way back up the hills, telling lies in the club house, and wishing they had made just one better putt. God I love this game!

If you are like the typical golfer you probably have not spent much time this winter preparing for the upcoming season. Golf can put some significant stress on your muscles and joints so the better prepared you are the more successful your season will be. For the minimalists one of the best things you can do is perform a quick warm up before you start. Several studies have shown that you can get a 12% increase in club head speed right after a warm up and a 24% increase when the warm up is performed for seven weeks. Golfers that perform a warm up for at least 10 minutes also have significantly less injury rates then ones with a shorter warm up. A few good exercises include side lunges, overhead squats, and rotational swings in both directions.

You might think that stretching right before you play is a good idea but it’s probably the worst thing you can do. A study in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning looked at two groups of golfers. One stretched for 20 minutes before taking practice shots and the other did no stretching. The stretching group was 60% less accurate, had 7% shorter shots and 5% slower club speed. These deficits lasted even after waiting an hour.

Golf

There are four main components to focus on for golf fitness. These are mobility, flexibility, stability, and strength/power. Most golfers will have limitations in at least one of these components. Addressing these can make a big difference in your game.

Mobility: The mid back is one of the most common areas of restricted mobility. Increasing your thoracic mobility will improve rotation and allow you to develop more power in your swing. This

is best improved by using foam roller self mobilization techniques. Hip and ankle mobility are also important. Lunges can help with both hip and ankle mobility.

Flexibility: Although stretching right before you play isn’t recommended that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stretch. Improving flexibility in your hips, lats, shoulders and hamstrings can improve your range of motion and help you get more out of your swing.

Stability: Low back or core stability is another big one. You need to be relaxed through the swing but stable at contact. A weak core will allow energy leaks which means all that power you develop doesn’t get fully transferred to the ball at contact. Low back pain is also very common in golfers. Developing good core strength can help minimize your risk. Performing planks and bird dog exercises will help you get a strong core.

Strength and Power: Studies on strength and power training related to golf include increased club head speed, increased driving distance and even a 30% improvement in putting skills. Focus on complex exercises like pushups, lat pulls, squats, diagonal chops and medicine ball throws.

A little time spent on these components now can really pay off later and might be the difference between having a good season and a great season.

There are numerous touring golf professionals who choose to enhance their game by training with a Certified Golf-Specific Pilates Specialist. They include Tiger Woods, Dave Duval, Annika Sorenstam, Lee Westwood, Rocco Mediat, Steve Ballesteros, Rich Beem, Steve Pate, Grace Park, Betsy King, among others.

“I believe great Golf-specific Pilates physical conditioning gives me an advantage, an extra gear. Just as form is an important element of the golf swing, it is also an important factor in Golf Pilates training. Sam Sneed is living proof that you can minimize the effects of time by remaining flexible.” Tiger Woods

“Golf Pilates is a Method of conditioning that involves hundreds of exercises designed to improve strength and flexibility without adding bulk.” Dave Duval

“After a near career-ending accident, I discovered that Golf Pilates unique design had long lasting benefits for flexibility, balance, and strength training.” Steve Pate

“I really just focused in on tightening up my abdominal muscles in Golf Pilates. This really helped with my back problems. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but when I do that, I am able to take the pressure out of my arms and shoulders. I was able to make a pretty free stroke.” Rich Beem

“I have ditched the weights after hurting my back. I radically changed my workout routine to doing Golf Pilates. It is a non impact strengthening workout that keeps me loose, keeps me fresh, and keeps me strong.” Rocco Mediat

The golf swing is one of the most unnatural, complex, and explosive movements in sports. Golf is a highly athletic event requiring a certain precision and strength that is both disciplined and physically demanding. Other athletes who engage in tennis, the martial arts and baseball use a similar level of exertion and muscle recruitment as golfers do. These athletes would NOT consider playing their sport without appropriate physical conditioning to meet the rigorous demands placed upon their minds and bodies.

The de-conditioned golfer tends to overwork and under perform while engaging in the mechanics of the golf swing. Extraneous muscles are recruited throughout the swing to compensate for a lack of flexibility, balance, strength, and power. By expending more energy you tire quickly. You have unsatisfactory results and a higher risk of overuse syndromes. However, golfers with a high degree of Pilates Golf-specific conditioning have better mobility, stability, endurance, breathing, and core power to fire their muscles in quicker bursts when needed.

Optimal golf performance requires a golfer to swing the club with enough speed and dexterity to satisfy both distance and directional criteria. This must be accomplished with great precision and endurance for the four plus hour length of the game. You can now combine your golf needs for strength, agility, coordination, speed and mental focus into Golf-specific Pilates training sessions. There is no better comprehensive cross-training program for golf than working with a Certified Golf-specific Pilates specialist.

In Golf-specific Pilates conditioning the body is always viewed as an entire unit moving efficiently through space. This is accomplished from a strong abdominal core fueled by efficient diaphragmatic breathing. This simple yet empowering formula allows you to play at your absolute personal best. Traditional strength training emphasizes the isolation of muscle groups which can be counter-productive for the golfer. Golf Pilates strengthens the entire trunk muscle structure in order to transfer the power from the legs and hips out to the arms and club shaft.

Golf Pilates reinforces what nature intended for all efficient and powerful movements –the necessity for deep diaphragmatic breathing which in turn activates the core abdominal muscles required to power the ball toward its target.

Joseph Pilates believed that the energy for ALL action must FIRST initiate from the core and then be expressed through to the extremities (arms and legs). In fact a strong core

musculature will protect the spine from the forces of the golf swing – hence less back strain and discomfort. If the core is weak the golfer will overuse the arms to compensate resulting in swing faults and injury.

It is the breath and the core that unites the mind with the body! Yet golfers never give this a passing thought. A Certified Golf Pilates Specialist will cue for breath work and core work within golf specific movements. The most powerful tool for a golfer during the swing is the ability to unite the breath work with core abdominal action. It establishes the timing and enhances the explosiveness of the essentially asymmetrical movement pattern of the golf swing. Consistency is the key for golf and Pilates in order to build correct movement patterns until they become second nature.

Increasing your intake of oxygen means more energy, endurance, and mental clarity needed for the length of the golf game. Inhaling during the backswing creates expansion and lengthening of the muscles of the trunk. The exhale initiates the core engagement which creates the explosive power of the downswing and impact. Golf Pilates Cross Training strives for muscle symmetry, core control, and breathing support for this unilateral sport.

Over the years numerous advancements in technology have enhanced and made easier the sport of golf. You can be sure that this process will continue. However, there is a limit to what materials and construction can do for one’s game. True refinement ultimately boils down to the individual swinging the club. It is time for the golfer to turn inward for a deeper understanding of their own body’s biomechanics! The

human body performs all movement patterns by recruiting muscles in specific sequence. This can be learned correctly or incorrectly. Golf-specific Pilates educates the neuromuscular system to recruit the needed muscles in precisely the right time, with the right rhythm, in the right order, with the right amount of power and fluidity.

A Certified Golf Pilates Specialist helps you to progress from basic flexibility and functional training to – functional strength training – and then advanced power training using the following:

Mind/body connection techniques for warm-up, conditioning, staying in the zone and injury prevention – including back care.

Symmetrical muscular conditioning.Balanced rotational movements with a clear spatial intent.A stronger connection to the “core” trunk muscles using

diaphragmatic breathing.Programming “muscle memory” through exercising the mind/

body connection.Orchestrating the proper movement initiation, sequencing and

timing.

A Certified Golf Pilates Specialist evaluates your golf posture and functional movement patterns to determine where the muscle imbalances exist. They customize a Golf Pilates Cross Training Program to restore length, strength, and endurance to the postural musculature. Additionally, they watch and correct (enhancing the mind-body connection using anatomy-based visual imagery cues, diaphragmatic breathing, and core strength) misalignments during the movement patterns. This deepens the neurological groove from the brain to the muscles used. The deeper the groove you establish along the proper neuromuscular pathway (muscle memory) the better the movement pattern, which results in consistent golf performance. Not only do you create muscular endurance to maintain good posture over all 18 holes but also throughout your entire day.

With threats of interest rates being on the rise, but still ever so low, rumors of the 30-Year Mortgage disappearing, discussions that the qualified residential mortgage requirements will become even more stringent, rents increasing due to supply and demand, all of this might be enough for you to determine that considering homeownership is

now the way to go. Most important is that homeownership may be the single most important asset-building strategy for individuals.

A friend and someone I network with said yesterday that while he

may not have retirement benefits or anything else, he will most likely own his home outright when he retires. I sensed and he stated that this is very comforting to him; I feel the same way. While some complain that their 401K’s are suffering and they’ve incurred loss in their stock portfolios, owning a home and having a roof over your head is the most comforting asset one can have with and/or without any other asset. Homeownership provides a sense of “rootedness” and gives one a stake in their community. If you have nothing else, owning your home can be all one needs to feel safety and security.

It seems that there could never be a better time for one to buy a

home than now. You should know that it is a strong buyers’ market; an opportunity to own for the first time or the opportunity to consider owning properties that you might not otherwise have an opportunity to consider owning in a sellers’ market or even a “normal” buyers’ market.

By becoming a homeowner or upgrading your existing home you

are also contributing to the overall well-being of your community. Homeownership can increase businesses in neighborhoods and stimulate the local and national economy, among a myriad of other benefits.

One would be remiss without mentioning that just like

anything else; something worth having doesn’t come without work and effort too. First, there will be work in securing your home (loan qualification, shopping with your Realtor, getting home insurance, etc.). Once you close the transaction and become that homeowner, there are responsibilities and costs associated with homeownership. Normally, but not always, your payment will include your taxes and insurance, but there are costs associated with homeownership versus renting, such as maintenance and repair, and all of these should definitely

be considered.

Devoted to finishing my first Ironman in Coeur d'Alene this summer, this is my fourth article in a series of mapping out my progress in training. In the following final weeks of training I will begin to peak, and will be in top physical condition before tapering into the race in late June. Currently I am focusing on the strategies I will use in order to excel in each sport of the Ironman Triathlon. Even though training includes exercises focusing on speed and technique as well as long distance endurance sessions, it’s important not to exceed a moderate pace while swimming, biking, or running in order to conserve the endurance reserve built over the last year. We are like vehicles expected to make a long journey with a single tank of gas; our engines are efficient and effective but our gas will soon deplete if we red-line often. I will be trying to keep my metaphoric engine RPM’s low so I can conserve my energy and spread it over the length of this enduring race. Racing in the Ironman is a true gamble - hoping to complete training injury free, and wishing for the best conditions possible to make the day perfect. Like any sport, the Ironman triathlon requires strategy. Here is an insight to mine.

The Swim: My technique has come a long, long way since jumping into the pool last fall. I have Dee Fraser, Derek Garcia, and the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Coeur d'Alene to thank for that. I couldn't be more happy with my abilities in the water which is a complete 180º perspective flip from when I registered for this race. Getting the proper technique developed is hugely important. It’s being able to interact with the water as an element rather than fighting through it with a poor streamline position and improper stroke tempo which would result in excess fatigue and ultimately, a horrible experience. When I enter the water, I will be right up front. I’m going to sprint as hard as I can for the first one hundred or two hundred yards until I feel like I am far away from the confused crowd of people all trying to find their pace at the same time. A nice and easy pace, after I am comfortable, with a few blocks of increased effort until the last few hundred yards of the swim where I will push out the last gusto I have to finish my swim strong before my transition.

The Bike: Maintaining a bike means keeping it tuned up and in good working order, and finding a good bike mechanic at a reputable bike shop is essential. I highly recommend going to CDA Cycle & Fitness on Government Way in Coeur d'Alene. Rob and Jessica Crump live and breathe bikes and have a vast knowledge for the industry and deal with a lot of Ironman triathletes, which isn't an easy thing I'm sure. After transitioning from the water, my goal is to find my pace and hydrate. Water and electrolytes need to be consumed during the race to maintain health and provide nourishment for overused muscles. Gels and carbohydrate rich foods will fuel the body to perform at an optimal level. My pace will be set around 22MPH, and I will try not to push much harder than that pace, nor do I want to fall below.

The Run: Running happens to be my strong point, but after a long bike ride, it may be the most challenging leg of the event. The first five miles are going to be painful. Transitioning from bike to run will mean utilizing sore legs and finding an appropriate pace without fully functioning limbs, or at least what seems that way. Once I find my runners legs I will set a nice, easy pace until the last couple miles. When the finish line is only a few meters away, I’m going to increase my effort until I max myself out right as I become an official Ironman.

Blue jeans, baggy sweatshirt and tennis shoes with the laces dangling, “Nicole” came through the doors of Teen Closet. With downcast eyes, Nicole and her foster mom were met at the door by a volunteer. That volunteer warmly introduced herself as Robyn, said she was glad they were there and told them how things at Teen Closet worked. Robyn walked them around the small boutique, pointing out the neatly stacked and sized jeans and t-shirts, the hanging shirts, jackets and dresses.

“This rack is one of the girls' favorites! It has jewelry, lotions and make-up. The lip glosses are usually a hit.” said Robyn.

As Nicole's shopping experience went on, Robyn took Nicole's choices to the fitting room and talked her into modeling the outfits. Each time Nicole stepped out of the dressing room to look in the full-length mirror (and for approval) her eyes grew brighter. She smiled more freely and became increasingly chatty.

On her way out, Robyn asked Nicole if she would like to sign the poster on the wall. She chose a bright orange Sharpie to leave her mark. Nicole picked up her 2 big bags full of clothes and said thanks. But, it was when the glass door swung closed and Nicole stopped to give a last smile to Teen Closet, that made the day of that volunteer. That smile stayed with Robyn as she refolded the clothes, straightened the racks of shoes and locked up.

You may know our volunteer, Robyn Nance, as KXLY4's 5 pm and 6 pm anchor. Teen Closet was the creation of Robyn and her friend (and foster parent recruiter) Linda Rogers. The two met and became friends when Robyn was reporting on the need for foster parents in the Spokane area.

Robyn has a weekly feature on KXLY4 at 6 called “Wednesday's Child,” which showcases children who need adoptive homes.

Both Robyn and Linda saw a national story about a clothes closet in Florida for girls in foster care, and decided Spokane needed something like that, for both girls and boys. With the help of some wonderful volunteers, community support and the KXLY4 Extreme Team, Teen Closet was open in the fall of 2007.

Since then, it's grown and moved to a location in Spokane Valley. Teen Closet serves foster teens in all of Eastern Washington and North Idaho, and has expanded to help young adults who've aged out of foster care, and children in need ( identified through local school districts).

Robyn's soft spot for foster kids started at a young age when her family's next door neighbors, in a small Missouri town, became foster parents caring for 3 young children. It didn't make sense to her that other children weren't growing up in loving homes. All these years later, she wants to help these kids any way she can. She hopes Teen Closet is it!

Teen Closet's mission statement is “helping boost the self esteem of teenagers in need, by providing fashionable clothing and accessories of their choice”.

You can learn more about Teen Closet, including the first ever TC 50 Relay Race at www.teencloset.org.

Beauty Sleep

Getting Your

Beauty Sleep

THE FIRST IN A SERIES ON WOMEN’S HEALTH

John Axelsson of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden looked at the effect that sleep, or its lack, had on the way other people perceived the attractiveness of the sleeper.

A good night's sleep may be one of the best-kept beauty secrets out there. Several recent studies have concluded that loss of just a few hours of sleep impacts your appearance. It's no wonder that your appearance suffers when you lose sleep, as it is an indicator of what is going on within your body as well.

A sleep deficit can have serious, far-reaching effects on your health – and bags under your eyes are the least of it. Other effects include:

Impact upon your ability to think clearly.Changes in your brain activity similar to those experienced by

people with psychiatric disorders.Making you feel hungry, even if you've already eaten.Weakening your immune systemRapid tumor growth

There are some practical ways in which one can improve or maintain one's health and quality of sleep. Does your sleep system (mattress, pillow, quilt, eye mask, and room). enable you to get quality restorative sleep? We have found ways to provide the vital components of deep sleep:

Proper support. Incorrect spinal alignment or localized pressure points can cause more than discomfort. This may lead to tossing and turning or even interrupt the sleep cycle.

Temperature regulation. Variations in temperature may also interrupt the sleep cycle, particularly in those stages where the body's own temperature regulating mechanism is temporarily suspended.

A relaxing, calming atmosphere. Ambient conditions and massage effects are known to be beneficial in promoting better rest and helping the onset of sleep.

A more natural sleep environment. Dealing with the negative impact of artificial lighting, electronic pollution, sound pollution, air pollution…

If you are having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or otherwise getting a restful night's sleep, you may want to check out the sleep assessment on WEBMD.

Medium Skin, a seven to eight percent DHA concentration is suitable for most mid-range skin tones.

Dark Skin, why? The reason, to even out skin tone. Go ahead and moisturize first on elbows and knees. Use a very light touch and only use on the light areas.

Spray Tan - I personally prefer spray tan booths and have never had a problem with them. Barrier creme is provided for nails, ankles and elbows and I am 100% even all over. May in the Garden

Making certain the soil is ready to work in the spring is a vital key to gardening success.

Don’t work your soil if it is too wet, as it will result in hard, clumpy soil that prohibits the plants from obtaining the water and nutrients they need. To determine its tilth – which means workability - dig down a few inches in your garden and grab a handful of soil. Squeeze it hard in your hand. If water drips out, it is too wet. If, when you open your hand, a hard ball of soil remains, it is too wet. But if you poke that hard clump of soil, and it breaks apart easily – your soil is ready to be worked.

There are a lot of natural indicators to guide you in your seasonal planting. For instance, when the Forsythia is in bloom…around late April or early May, you know it is time to cut back your roses.

Prune away all but 3 to 6 canes on hybrid teas - fewer canes will result in fewer but larger blooms. Vigorous bushes will benefit from thinning, which provides good air circulation and helps prevent fungal disease. Remove all dead, diseased and damaged wood.

And this time of year, a native Lilac bush will tell you what you need to know.

When the Lilac is in bud (early May), you know it is time to plant your root crops, such as carrots, turnips, potatoes and radishes, and plant cold-hardy vegetables, such as lettuce, peas and spinach, when the Lilacs begin to leaf.

When the Lilacs are past full bloom, it is generally safe to plant your frost-tender vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and corn. That is the time for tender annuals to make their way to the garden, as well – such as Marigolds, Portulaca, Zinnia.

Everyone dreams of a lush green lawn, and a lot of effort goes into trying to attain that status. But the truth is, turfgrass is the cheapest thing to put in a landscape, and the most expensive thing to maintain. Cut yourself some slack and follow these guidelines:

Follow the “holiday schedule” when fertilizing your lawn and apply only 4-5 times per year - on Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. The fifth time would be on Halloween, but only if we have late summer temperatures.

Spring is also the perfect time to core aerate your lawn. Removing those small plugs of turf allows your lawn to obtain more water, oxygen and nutrients. Then you can let the plugs decompose on your lawn for additional nutrients.

Good luck this spring and remember, WSU Master Gardeners are available for any gardening question you may have. Visit them at 222 N. Havana in Spokane, just south of the Indians Ballpark, Monday through Friday during business hours. Or visit our website at: http://www.spokane-county.wsu.edu/spokane/eastside or for more information, call 477-2181.

Master GardeningFOLLOW SOME EASY SEASONAL GUIDELINES TO GARDENING SUCCESS

Today’s seeds are tomorrow’s flowers and vegetables and if you get started right, it can be what takes place in your yard. WSU Master Gardeners are volunteer community educators whose task is to provide research based gardening information to home gardeners – information that is specific to gardening in Eastern Washington. The best thing to remember is this: gardening is a science, but it is not an exact science, and experience is the best way to learn.

April 16th, 2011, Red Eye Promotions put a splash on the map with the first Spokane’s Top Model Event. It was held at the Knitting Factory in down town Spokane and was definitely a night to remember and a good time had by all. From 6:00 on a continual line of people surrounded the building for hours as they waited in line to enter the event. Media and Photographers laced the red carpet as the best dressed and VIP guest entered.

At 7:00, the event was scheduled to start but was delayed due to the hundreds of people still lined up outside the knitting factory waiting to get in. The doors were closed at 8:00 turning away over one hundred people. With over a thousand people in attendance the event began with a local radio host, Jackie Brown, from 92.9, as the MC. There was excitement in the room as the lights dimmed and the stage lit up preparing for the first of two walks in the runway show. As each model came out and walked across the stage their head shots and final photos were broadcast alongside the runway, previously taken by local photographers, Shane Savage and Jamie Valandra . In between the runway walks the crowd was well entertained by local dance school, Tangled Roots; Musicians, Kari Marquerite & the 76, and a local rapper “JINK”.

After the 2nd runway walk the audience was asked to vote for who they thought was the best model keeping in mind not just the model but the makeup, hair and clothing. This was to help the judges in case of a tie. The judge’s panel included Seattle Fashion Week

winners, Salon directors and glamour-magazines executives. People cheered in support as the winners were announced. First place model went to Alexandra Wilson, second to Arielle St. Claire and third to Nanayaa Opare. The best boutique was ‘Swank’ and the winning salon was ‘dept.z’.

As you can imagine, a lot of preparation went into this event. Out of 286 entries only 40 girls were chosen to model. Each model was assigned a salon and boutique that worked with them for weeks preparing the perfect look from hair, makeup and clothes. Knowing that they were all competing to be the best in their field of expertise and that they were relying on one another, created quite a synergy between model, salon and boutique.

After the event we took some time to interview some of the people who participated in the event as well as those who just came to watch. These are some of the comments we heard:

Kris Kildruff and Taylor Christian, Owners and Operators of Red Eye Promotions supplied us with the following: “As far as the event, We were very eager to put a fashion event together that not only would be focused on models, but give some of the amazing local salons and boutiques in Spokane a playing field to CREATE; something that could INSPIRE. Concerning the models, we didn’t want to have required measurements or height. We wanted girls who represented the diversity of the involved Boutiques. This night was an example of how Red Eye Promotions focuses on new and

fun ways to brand, message, and build for small businesses and independent talent.”

Below are some of the random comments we heard from others

Steve Malmquist came to the event with friends that night. His comment was, “I don’t remember being anywhere where I saw so many beautiful people dressed to the nines and behaving appropriately. It was a really nice evening. It was as much a show in the audience as it was on stage. Everyone was dressed for the occasion.

Bryce Horey, a friend of one of the models said, “It was a very exciting event with a great atmosphere and good vibes. The show was phenomenal from head to toe and very well prepared. I had a lot of fun.”

Lizzie Hughui, part of backstage production and Red Carpet said, “Spokane Top Model was such an exciting way for Spokane to see a lot of our local talent and creativity in such a diverse way. I am honored to have been a part of such an event!”

Jessi Bailey who was one of the models said, “It was a Blast! What a great experience working with so many different people in the community. I would definitely do it again.”

Laura Feasline, our very own Spokane Savvy Art Director and a model in the competition said, “Spokane’s Top Model was an extraordinary

experience! I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in diving into that world. It was an excellent networking tool as well as a great way to show Spokane what you’re made of!

Christine Stephan, one of the local Nosey Parker Reps commented, “I thought it was very innovative and fashion forward for the event to be put on by the Spokane community. All I’m hearing from the Boutiques and Salon owners is how everyone who wasn’t involved wants to be involved next year. So, I’m looking forward to next year’s Top Model with more of our community involved!”

Lori Kennedy who came to watch her niece said, “I thought it was very professionally done. The models were interesting, fun and got the audience involved. I loved that the competition included the salons and boutiques.”

Kylee Dickinson is 13 and came with her family. Her comment was, “I thought it was really fun and liked to see all the different fashions, especially the different hair styles.”

So, there you have it. It sounds as though the event was a great success but more than that everyone had a good time. I know we did and we are definitely looking forward to a repeat next year! Hats off to all the models, salons, photographers, Red Eye Promotions and all the volunteers who helped make this event what it turned out to be… Awesome!

For a little over 30 years, Jean Auel has taken readers on an epic journey in her Earth Children® Series. When Clan of the Cave Bear was made into a movie, the bargain was sealed and Auel’s engrossing fictionalization of the early history of homo sapiens has taken heroinne Ayla through many lands and many experiences. Now, in the long-awaited culmination of these stories, she has moved human kind closer to the concepts of monogamy, as she and her mate Jondalar begin a family.

Fans will find this sixth novel everything they hoped for and more. Even those who do not usually read fiction will find much in this book to warrant going on the journey. Auel’s research has earned her respect and her ability to weave a tale from her findings has earned her the love of millions of readers.

Told in the language of the track and the alleyway, this is the story of horses and the people who race them. With names like “The Mahdi” and “Little Spinoza” for the beasts on four legs and “Two-Tie” and “Suitcase” for those on two, even if the plot was boring, the narrative would sing with the beauty of truth. This is West Virginia and the cheap track where races end in the horses being claimed by others, even if they win. Into this drama bursts the Lord of Misrule and all bets are off.

Linda Oien is a native of Spokane and has a great love for helping people in her community be successful. She attended Shadle Park High School where she was enrolled in the Distributive Education Class which enabled her to work for school credits. As a high school student she worked at Woolworths as the Candy Department Manager, also helped with advertising. From there she went to General Advertising for the Spokesman Review. Following the Review she worked for Madison South Convalescent Center, Northwest Orient Airlines and Deaconess Hospital to round out her first five years of employment. Then in 1971, Linda was asked to go to work for Xerox. It was at this time that she got a taste of the corporate world, and realized she had ambitions. With those ambitions she went on to accomplish alot in a time when it was nontraditional for women to choose a career and climb the corporate ladder. She began her corporate management career as the first female District Manager of Technical Service Seattle had ever seen, and progressed through the ranks over the next eighteen years. She became the District Manager of Technical Service for Orange County, an organization that grew from 129 to 225 employees during her five and a half years, where she was responsible for delivering a $42,000,000.00 business. When asked about her education she replies, “The best education I had was the school of hard knocks and practical experience.” Her long entailed resume proves that.

During her 18 years of management and leadership experience, a lot of change was taking place in the business world. In the late 70’s when

Xerox patents lapsed and it was no longer the only game in town things changed. Xerox who, at the time, was world renown for their quality of training and development began a major retraining effort where instead of telling an employee what to do and how to do it, management learned how to engage and empower people by tapping into their gifts and talents of creativity. Everyone was taught how to communicate, solve problems and look for ways to improve how the work was done. The impact of this Leadership through Quality movement helped Xerox succeed at recapturing low-end market share.

A decade later many companies placed focus on increasing shareholder value. As a result they stopped investing in the development of their people and employees were considered expendable. As a result, organizations began to fall short of their potential.

Throughout these years of considerable change, Linda embraced the belief that people are a company’s most valuable asset. She also held true to the belief that it is through their people that leaders and organizations will be successful. Then, in 1996 she left corporate America to start her own consulting practice called businessPATHS. Through this business she helps organizations with strategic planning, leadership, team development and executive and leadership coaching. In addition she has been a guest speaker at Leadership Connections, Spokane City Forum, Power Women’s Summit and she speaks to college classes on leadership and organizational development.

Driven by making a difference in people’s lives and businesses she began developing an assessment process and during the economic

downturn, she has written her book, “power 10” LEADERSHIP: How to Engage People and Get Results. Organizations often struggle with how to pull ahead of their competition and win the race. “power10” is a practical work book designed with the busy business manager in mind. It helps them pinpoint areas needing focus, set the pace and tone and get everyone in the boat rowing the same direction.

Linda uses rowers synonymously with the work place. It is said that rowers are probably the world’s best athletes. The sport requires a full-body workout from

members of the crew. Though rowing looks graceful, elegant, and sometimes effortless, it takes hard work, coordination, and precision to end up with the fastest speed and accuracy. Oien looks at your business in that same light…managers and leaders need to motivate the crew, coordinate the actions, serve as their on-the-water coach and usher their team across the finish line. Her book features pictures of our own Gonzaga University Women’s Rowing team.

Setting all her business sense aside, Linda is a woman with a big smile and very contagious laugh. She chose not to have children because of her career. She knew either one would need her complete attention to succeed at the level she would require of herself. Therefore, she chose her career in a time that that may not have been popular for a woman to do.

When asked what she likes to do Oien laughed loudly and said, “What do I do? I’m a workaholic!” She is a member of the EWGA and loves playing golf, spending time with family and friends and hitting the different networking events. She is also an active member of Rotary Club 21 where she has been a member since 1998.

She is a special woman who forged to the top in a man’s corporate world. It wasn’t popular then but she accomplished as much as any man in this industry. She looks back and is thankful that she had the opportunity to accomplish more than she ever could have imagined!

Brain FoodYour brain... How can you ensure its health? The simplest answer is to consume brain food which is food that will enhance the function

of your brain. Brain food is mainly comprised of Omega-3’s and protein (salmon), flavanoids (blueberries), potassium (melon), and monounsaturated fats (avocados). When adding these into your daily diet it will enhance learning, prevent memory loss, increase blood flow and fight free radicals which also stimulates your whole body and gives you more energy. Nobody wants to compromise the taste for being

healthy and you don’t need to. Below is a brain healthy meal that will have your taste buds jumping for joy and shouting for more. Enjoy it by yourself as a simple treat that you undeniably deserve or with a group of your closest friends for a swanky soiree not to be forgotten.

I would have to say that for the past two years, every day has been Mothers Day for me.

In mid October of 2009, my mother got sick. She recovered and we thought it was nothing. Then at the end of January 2010, she got sick again and never fully recovered.

For Mothers Day in 2010 we went to Shari's Restaurant for brunch and my kids and I took her shopping. Even though it was a simple day and it may not seem as something special to anyone else, it was one of the best memories I will cherish.

In June, my mother got even worse and in July of 2010 they told me she had a very aggressive type of Alzheimer's, and she was only 62. It crushed me. Not only because she was my mother, but she was also my business partner. She had to be put into a nursing or assisted living home. We set her up into an apartment and she was so proud of it.

In October of 2010, I noticed things were changing around her apartment. She was more confused and the clutter was becoming a problem. I tried as often as I could, about 3 times a week to come to help her and just visit. With 4 kids of my own to raise and being a single mom myself, it was very difficult at times. But I had to be there, she's my MOM.

My sister lives in Arizona, so she cant be there to help lighten the load. She made it home for Christmas and we had a wonderful Christmas at home with Mom. But my sister and I both knew she was distant; Mom just wasn't herself. My sister left to return home to Arizona with her family and 3 days later Mom got worse and went to the hospital where she stayed for a month. She now is in a nursing home, awaiting her fate.

I still go and see her at least 3 times a week, even though she has told me that I am not her daughter and at times she doesn't recognize me. I bring her a surprise lunch and buy her little things just to see her face light up. I know that she isn't going to be around forever and that her days are numbered now....so to me, everyday I have her here with me is MOTHERS DAY!

Cherish those days with your Mother before they slip away.

Teacher, Comforter, Encourager~ These are the words I think of when I think about my mother, Jeannine Hansen. My mother married my father in 1975, just 6 days after turning 20 years old. In April of 1977 they brought a beautiful baby girl into the world & shortly after she was born they realized she was very sick. She passed 8 short weeks after coming into the world. The very month after she passed away my mom got pregnant again, this time with a baby boy who was born in April 1978, a year almost to the day after their first was born. My oldest brother is now 33 and has 4 younger siblings :) My mom is one incredible lady & such an over-comer! She was a stay at home mom for many years and raised all of her children to be active and positive in everything we do. "Speak what you want" was the main thing I remember growing up. Now 5 grown children (& many "adopted sons & daughters) and 1 grandson later I can honestly say she raised us all well, instilled good morals into us and we are all best friends to this day. Sunday is family night- no matter what! Always has been, always will be. We all go over to my parents house (which has always had an open door policy to anyone) and we eat, play games and have lots & lots of laughs. My mother started 'Bunnies for Babies' 9 years ago in 2003. She sought out childrens shelters in the Spokane area and looked for a way to bless the community and give children that literally have nothing, some hope. Every year on Easter and Christmas my mother, with a little help from the family, goes around to these shelters and hands out Easter Baskets the day before Easter and hand made blankets & stockings at Christmas time. She puts every single basket together by hand and makes each one incredibly special according to the child's age and gender. My father dresses as a bunny and makes them smile while handing out baskets. Each kid gets called by name and knows that someone loves them and cares for them. She spends so much time preparing every year, twice a year and makes sure that no child is missed and that each feels cared for. A simple gesture that goes a long way. She would do it every day to see the smiles on those kid's faces when they receive that gift from someone they have never met. She would happily put anyone's needs in front of her own and she has displayed this over and over and over again. She is the most remarkable lady I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and now that I have a son of my own I know how important the things are that she taught me. If my son thinks I am half the mom that I believe my mother to be then I will have done well. I hope to have an impact on lives as much as she has in the past and will continue to in the future. Did I mention that she and my dad will celebrate their 36th anniversary this year??? What an example! She has a heart for ministry and I am glad to call her momma. She will leave an incredible legacy on this earth with all of her children and soon to be many grandchildren (she has been waiting a LONG time). To my wonderful mother who I adore and could not live without. This is from all of your children who love and adore you to the ends of the earth- "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my mommy you'll be!" Thank you for being you.

Remembering Our Fallen Soldiers

This month Spokane Savvy is honoring Memorial Day and it is good to remind ourselves of the huge sacrifice made by our men and women in uniform, past and present. Last month we asked our readers to send in pictures of loved ones that had given their life in service for our country. We received one and as we honor him, he represents all of his brothers and sisters that served and are no longer here with us. What is our duty on this solemn day of remembrance? Here at Spokane Savvy, we believe it is our duty to assure that the efforts of our fallen have not been in vain. It is up to us, the living survivors, to carry on in the way that they would have wanted us to by upholding freedom, being compassionate, valuing integrity and honor, doing our best for one another and our country. Any action

we undertake which betters our community or our country is the most fitting tribute to our fallen.

So remember to attend the memorial services, place the flowers, pray for the souls of the departed. Do not forget, however, to humbly dedicate ourselves to the real way to honor our departed soldiers and their families with the practical gifts of caring and sharing with those around us. After all, that is the ultimate gift that they gave us when they gave their life to protect us and our freedom. It is a special man or woman who chooses to serve our country in battle and in remembrance, we thank all of those for their sacrifice and ask blessings upon their families.
