A better future: Totcomana and beyond

“My sons and daughters didn’t go to school, but my grandchildren are going to school because we want a better future for them.”

Ana Pushaina, grandmother to several students of the Totcomana school

Home to the Wayúu people, Totcomana is a remote village in the Colombian desert with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Farenheit year-round. In winter, water sources often dry up.

Marian and Kellys, pictured below, collect water every morning from this unprotected jagüey. They are often late for school, when they are able to attend.

IntroductionWaterAid is the leading international NGO focused on improving access to water and sanitation and promoting hygiene. We work to transform the lives of the poorest and most marginalized people, helping them to lead healthy and dignified lives. In Colombia, an estimated 1.6 million people live without access to water and 7.5 million people live without decent sanitation in their homes. If we take into account the functionality, quality of service and exclusion, this number increases significantly.

Enable the coordination and accountability of key actors to improve the delivery of WASH services at the national and local levels

Strategic Objectives

Promote the leadership of women and girls in the adoption of good sanitation and hygiene practices

Demonstrate affordable, effective and rights-based WASH models for their adoption and implementation

OUR GOALis to ensure that marginalized groups and people in situations of vulnerability have equitable access to clean water and adequate sanitation and adopt good hygiene practices to lead healthy and dignified lives.

We work principally with indigenous Wayúu communities in the department of La Guajira, building on ten year's experience from our predecessor, Fundación Aguayuda. In 2018, we expanded our work to the populations affected by the forced displacement and violence of the armed conflict in the department of Putumayo.

EQUALITY – WASH in Rural communitiesWe work to ensure that communities marginalized, excluded from services and infrastructure, have sustainable access to water, sanitation and hygiene. We work hand in hand with communities to find efficient and sustainable solutions, using technologies that are context-appropriate.

INTEGRATION - WASH in SchoolsWe work in schools and early childhood centers to ensure access to WASH for students and teachers. To promote behavioral changes in hygiene habits, we develop fun pedagogical approaches adapted to the context.

HYGIENE - Women's Empowerment in Sanitation and HygieneWe work with women to develop, test and improve behavior change models that are relevant and culturally sensitive. Placing women at the center of our work allows us to achieve direct and indirect benefits for the entire community, including in the areas of health, education and economic productivity.

SUSTAINABLE SERVICES - Sector StrengtheningWe form alliances at the national, departmental and municipal levels to coordinate efforts and improve WASH services. Our partners include: government agencies, universities, research centers, NGOs and the private sector.
