GAME OBJECTIVE With the help of Odal, an alien guide, students must stop Overlord Zek, the evil mastermind bent on causing FINANCIAL CHAOS! Students solve puzzles, answer quiz questions, and use power-ups to triumph. The game requires strategic planning and wise investing to reach financial goals in order to defeat Overlord Zek.

How does the Star Banks Adventure® game help develop key financial literacy concepts?

SETTING A FINANCIAL GOALStudents must select one of three financial goals at the beginning of each level. The Budget, Regular, and Deluxe versions of an item all have different prices, so for each level it’s up to the student to select a goal he or she feels can be reached. Students will discover that setting financial goals is an important part of providing for their needs as well as their wants.

PRIORITIZING SPENDINGStudents are shown how incorporating an allowance for spending, along with saving and investing, is part of a balanced budget. In the game, students can either put their coins in a Star Bank or use them for entertainment. Spending on entertainment does not directly help students reach their financial goals, but it does give them additional “power up” energy.

ASSET ALLOCATIONTo achieve longer-term goals, students use asset allocation to divide their money among the yellow, orange, and red Star Banks. They learn there are different risks for gain or loss associated with each type of bank. In the Star Banks Adventure®

game, students will get a warning when they have too much money invested in high-risk Star Banks.

RATE OF RETURNIn the game, the rate of return is represented by three different-colored Star Banks. The yellow bank is like a savings account, orange is like a bond, and red is like a stock. Yellow has the least risk, but lower returns. Red has the most risk but may deliver higher returns. Students learn that a return is the gain (or loss) of money from a savings or investment account for a set period of time.

INFLATION AND TIME HORIZONSStudents use the concept of a time horizon for reaching financial goals to determine the types of investments that they can choose. In the game, inflation occurs after every five moves, which increases the number of coins needed to reach the financial goal. By using a combination of different-colored Star Banks, students learn how to keep ahead of inflation and reach long-term goals.

DIVERSIFICATIONStudents learn that diversification is the investment of funds in different kinds of stocks, bonds, etc., within each investment category. In the game, students are warned when they need to diversify their coins, meaning that their next rate of return is guaranteed to be negative unless they react quickly and balance their coins among the Star Banks.
