WELCOME MESSAGE

Since its inception in 2007, EACEF has provided a platform conducive to civil engineering academics and researchers in East Asia to meet with their peers from Europe, and interact and exchange ideas. It also provides an opportunity for young researchers and academics from the many and diverse universities in East Asia to showcase their work applying engineering skill and knowledge in the context of this regions problems.

The theme of EACEF2013 is ‘Innovations in Civil Engineering for Society and the Environment’. It reflects the central role of the civil engineering discipline in creating technologically-based systems for the benefit of society and protecting the environment. Increasingly, there is the added emphasis on engineering innovation to deliver better value to society. As Singapore places great emphasis on the education and training of its people, EACEF2013 includes a special plenary session on ‘Incorporating sustainability and innovation in civil engineering education’ to discuss changes that are afoot as a result of rapid technological change.

The program committee received close to 200 abstracts of which 67 from a dozen nations have been selected for presentation. They have been grouped into broad thematic areas like Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Project Management, Transportation Engineering etc.

As Chair of the Organizing Committee, I take this opportunity to warmly and sincerely welcome all of you to EACEF2013. EACEF has always been about sharing one’s best recent work in the spirit of friendship and camaraderie. We hope you will experience the EACEF spirit and enjoy your stay in Singapore. Finally, I wish you a fruitful and successful conference!

With my best wishes,

Chan Weng TatNational University of SingaporeChairman, EACEF2013 Organizing Committee
