Welcome toL Y O N

We are delighted to invite you to participate in the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science (EWASS) to be held in Lyon, France, from 24th to 28th June 2019. EWASS is the annual scientific conference of the European Astronomical

Society (EAS), and is the largest annual astronomy conference in Europe.

EWASS will be hosted by the University of Lyon.

INTEREST AND OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT EWASS 2019

Lyon – at the heart of European Science

With 140 years of history, Lyon Observatory hosts a broad spectrum of expertise and research, ranging from the study of the fundamental nature of the universe - to the search for life on Mars.

In particular, Lyon laboratories have a long tradition of building state-of-the-art instruments for the largest observatories and space missions. They participate in large international collaborations, to produce the best scientific results.

France is a key investor and partner in a multitude of next-generation observatories and satellites (including LSST, ELT, Virgo and Euclid), as well as running forthcoming LHC and neutrino experiments.

Lyon researchers contribute directly to each of these projects, ranging from the provision of world-class computer facilities and technical expertise, to the manufacture of complex optical systems.

Among its recent successes, Lyon led the design and construction of MUSE, a €21M integral field spectrograph, which is now the most requested instrument at the VLT/ESO.

University of Lyon also specialises in the study of planet formation and the in-situ analysis of terrestrial and extra-terrestrial rocks. Lyon researchers are actively involved in several Mars orbiter and rover missions, and led a proposal for the landing site for the ExoMars mission.

Lyon has an internationally recognised university, home to 6,800 researchers and 140,000 students, and was voted the best student city in France (L’Étudiant – 2017).

In recent years Lyon has hosted numerous international astronomical meetings, and we now look forward to the largest yet, welcoming over 1,000 professional astronomers from the French, European and international communities.

Lyon – a premier destination for life and work

Famed as the culinary capital of France, Lyon is also the #1 European city break destination (Travel Award 2016), #1 business-friendly city in France (L’Entreprise-L’Express – 2014), and the #1 choice among executives (APEC – 2014).

With its UNESCO World Heritage site, Lyon is popular with tourists and businesses alike, both enjoying the proximity to the Alps as well as excellent transport connections.

From its historical roots as a vital European trading centre, Lyon has become a world leader in life sciences and biomedical production, with Lyon and its surrounding area now the largest manufacturing region in France.

This regional success is backed by 600 private and public laboratories, and their 19,000 researchers.

Lyon – a public interested in science and innovation

Discovering our place in the Universe is a strongly felt desire. This is especially evident in Lyon, where the Vaulx-en-Velin planetarium welcomes 80,000 visitors every year.

Lyon Observatory attracts 2,500 visitors and 4,000 students each year, promoting scientific careers through its Open Days and other events.

Capitalising on this strong community connection, an ambitious programme of outreach and astronomy events will be organised to coincide with EWASS 2019.

The legacy of EWASS 2019 will capture the attention of the public and provide a deeper awareness for the importance of research and science in the modern world.

EWASS 2019 provides French and European companies unparalleled 5-day access to the European Astronomy and Space Science community, with representatives from international organisations and collaborations (including ESA, ESO, SKA, ANR, CNRS).

EWASS 2019 presents an excellent opportunity for publishing houses; the conference will welcome a lively mix of experts from the field of natural sciences (primarily astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics, but also instrumentation, Earth and planetary physics).

Your support of EWASS will connect you directly with the latest global advances in astronomical research. We are looking forward to a stimulating meeting in Lyon and would be honoured to have you join us.

Programme

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

EWASS 2019 in Lyon offers a wide range of Symposia and Special Sessions covering the latest discoveries and outstanding results in astronomy, astrophysics and space science. The programme is complemented with plenary talks and honorary lectures by distinguished speakers. Several prestigious prizes will be awarded during the most important events of the week. EWASS aims to become the Forum where the big European projects meet smaller communities to exchange information, creating synergy and increasing collaboration in Europe and beyond.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME

It will be exactly 20 years since EWASS was last held in France. Therefore an extensive outreach campaign will run parallel to the conference, ensuring that the French public can also benefit from this impressive showcase of astronomical research.

We have forged many citywide partnerships to produce a comprehensive programme of science communication events, attracting significant media attention at EWASS 2019.

During the month of June we will mark the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing with a public exhibition that celebrates the past and present achievements of Lunar and Martian exploration. As a key attraction, a full size replica of the Curiosity rover will be on display.

As part of their vast cultural programme, the Musée des Confluences will host a public lecture by a world leading astronomer. In tandem, the Vaulx-en-Velin Planetarium will stage a public debate addressing contemporary issues surrounding the troubling rise of fake news and obscurantism in society, set to include experts, leading politicians, scientists and journalists.

In association with the municipal library, local schools will participate in a science and literature contest based on the theme of Le Petit Prince (written by the best-selling and local novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupéry). Meanwhile, the University library will invite people to attend an exhibition on the forthcoming Euclid space mission.

To inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, young (and not so young) people will be given the opportunity to participate in a YouTube science video competition.

Numerous activities are planned as part of the annual city festival Tout l’monde dehors (Everybody outside). This will include a 1 km long scale model of the Solar System, multiple night astronomy sessions, as well as a grand picnic where visitors will be given to opportunity to observe the Sun through specialist equipment.

During the week following EWASS 2019, Lyon will play host to the final and semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In association with top athletes, the City of Lyon and ASVEL will organise a round-table discussion to address the shared issues surrounding the lack of visibility of women in scientific and sporting disciplines.

Our goal is to provide a public conference that will promote EWASS 2019 and resonate with the Lyon public. All of this will be supported by a media campaign coordinated through the CNRS, UCBL, ENS de Lyon, Vaulx-en-Velin Planetarium, Musée des Confluences and the City of Lyon. EWASS 2019 will also benefit from additional attention thanks to the near-simultaneous international event, the FIFA Women's World Cup.
