THE WOMEN OF VICTORY: BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS

2020 HONOREES2020 HONOREES

VICTORYVICTORY, a special branch of the American Cancer Society, is a volunteer organization founded in 1987 that raises funds to help in the fight against cancer. The Holiday Shopping Card and The Cattle Baron’s Ball are our signature events which provide us with the avenues for this fundraising endeavor. In addition to our major fundraising events, VICTORY hosts The Cattle Baron’s Ball Children’s Party for pediatric oncology patients at the Children’s Museum of Houston as well as the Gentlemen’s Committee to raise money for prostate cancer.

Since our inception, the over 350 dedicated hard-working women of VICTORY have contributed over $59 million to the American Cancer Society for vital research, patient services and education and join the fight to eradicate cancer.

Dear Friends,This has been a year unlike any other in our lifetimes. Many businesses, foundations, and individuals face significant economic challenges and an unknown future. The American Cancer Society has experienced

significant reductions in donations and faces a historically turbulent landscape.

One thing about the future is quite certain…cancer does not care about pandemics, economic disruptions or social distancing. Cancer remains on the job and working full-time, non-stop. Cancer certainly is not a choice anyone makes, but it is a reality that many of us face. While advances have been made in the fight against cancer, the fight must continue, even in these difficult times. Please help us fight for a cure!

Each member of VICTORY has her own personal reasons for joining in this effort. We are immensely gratified to celebrate the women of VICTORY who, in their personal battles and survival of breast cancer, have embodied the perseverance and resilience now required of us all. Thank you, ladies, for showing us the way!

Cancer is tough. It doesn’t rest, it’s hard to beat, and it can take the people we love. But Houstonians are tougher. Please join us in honoring and celebrating these women and fighting cancer through your gifts and support of the Holiday Shopping Card.

RESEARCH & SUPPORT

Bisrat G. Debeb, DVM, Ph.D., Assistant professor, Department of Breast Medical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and his team proposed to understand how a novel protein drives cancer cells to spread from the breast to the brain and how it could be blocked to develop new and better treatment approaches.

Eveline Barbieri, M.D., Ph.D.Assistant professor, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers, and her team proposed to elucidate the events that block neural crest differentiation and promote neuroblastoma initiation and progression. By doing so, she will identify therapeutically relevant targets and develop novel differentiation strategies for high-risk neuroblastoma.
