StatementFromTheDirectorHowdy!My name is Rogelio Tinajero, and I am the Director for the 29th Annual StudentConferenceonLatinoAffairs(SCOLA),heldannuallyatTexasA&MUniversity.SCOLAhasbeenmyhomeduringmytimeatTexasA&M,andthus,itistrulyanhonortoserveas the director of an organization that has helped me in fostering leadership,challengedmyidentity,andinspiredmetoserveothers.Uponreflectingonthisimpact,theconferencestaffhaschosen¡ConGanas!:BuildingaLegacyasthethemeforSCOLA2017.Wehopethatthisthemewillguidedelegatesinexploringhowone’svalues,skills,andcultureintersectwiththegoalofpropellingtheirfutureandservingtheircommunities.Just asmy experiencewith SCOLAhas impactedme, the conference has had similareffects on those that have attended; they leave the conference filled with pride inwhomtheyareandinspiredtomakepositivestrivestowardstheirfuture.AsDirector,I am striving to preserve and expand these efforts; SCOLA is known for bringingtogether professionals and students, and uniting both groups in rich dialogue byproviding resources, awareness, and great speakers. As a result of attending theconference,ourdelegatesoftentimeslearnsomethingnewabout themselves,landaninternship, gain exposure to an important topic, or simply enjoy the richness of theconferenceatmosphere.If you have beenapart of SCOLA inanyway,weappreciate your continued supportandwouldlovetohearaboutyourexperience.Ifyouhavenot,IhopeIhavebeenableto explain the importance of providing a space for dialogue, discussion, andnetworking,wherestudentsandprofessionalsof allbackgrounds cancome togetheranddiscusstheissuesthataffectthediverseLatinocommunity.Ihopeyoudecidetobecome involved with this amazing organization. RecapofSCOLA2016

SCOLA 2016 was a huge success. The three-day conference featured two newadditions thatwerewell received; a ProfessionalDevelopment Institute, and theinaugural Resource/Career Fair. With the 2016 theme revolving aroundprofessionalism,2016wastheperfecttimetounveilbothoftheseadditions.Theprofessionalinstitutefeaturedrenownedspeaker,veteranandconsultant,Ms.GracielaTiscareño-Sato.Sheledthedelegatesinalargeworkshopthroughwhichtheywereabletodeveloptheirpersonalbrand.The resource fair proved tome an excellentway tomeet our goal of promotingnetworking amongst students and professionals. Through the 25 companies andinstitutionspresent,weexposedourdelegatestovariouseducation,internshipandservice opportunities. The inaugural SCOLA Gala was a fun, exciting way tocelebrate the delegates, and to present an amazing Keynote Speaker, Dr. HenryMusoma.Betweenspeakers,workshopsandroundtables,delegatesenjoyedtheopportunitytonetworkwitheachother,andtoindulgeinthediversetopicsthatmadeuptheLatinxcommunityOurclosingKeynoteSpeaker,AdanGonzales,exemplifiedhowanyonecanmakeapositive change in their own lives aswell as in their communities. Like thisweclosedSCOLA2016,andfocusedonwhatisnext;Whatisthelegacyweareleaving?

While this is a “living theme” that will form itself as theconferenceunveils,wedohopethatthroughthisthemeweareabletoexplorehowone’sculture,history,andeffortsintersectwiththequestionof“whatisthelegacyweareleaving?”ConGanasisaphrasecommonlyusedintheHispaniccommunitytomotivateandencourage.WearehopingthatdelegatesthatarefamiliarwiththisphrasewillsharewhatConGanasmeanstothem,andhowthisculturalexpressionmayapplyintheireverydaylivesasstudents,professionals,leaders,activists,familymembers,andanyother identity.
