In Western Uganda poverty and poor health services mean that people frequently become sick. Malaria, malnutrition, pneumona and HIV/AIDS are common and often have dire consequences, especially for kids.
MARANATHA HEALTH: is responding in three ways...
Empowering: working with local clinics to strengthen the wider health system
Developing: running community health and development programs
Healing: operating a clinic with affordable and high quality services
CONTENTSABOUT US:OUR WORK
We use a series of initiatives to tackle the underlying causes of ill health and the injustice of an under-resourced health system. These are delivered through the Maranatha Health Centre in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, Western Uganda, and overseen by our 37 Ugandan staff members. They are supported by expatriate GPs and development professionals from Australia and Europe.
The centre specialises in paediatric care and serves as a base for our innovative capacity building work and preventative community health programs. We offer sought-after and highly effective clinical services, including in and outpatient care, HIV clinics, an operating theatre, a pharmacy, and more. We treat over 900 patients, mostly children, each month.
Our emphasis is on spreading good medicine across Uganda. Using our clinic as a model for training and capacity building, we with partner with other health providers to improve their ability to deliver excellent health care to Ugandans. We also work in close collaboration with local communities and villages, focusing on simple health education and behavioural change.
Our work in Uganda is underpinned by a Board of Directors and two part-time staff in Australia. It is also supported by Global Development Group. GDG takes responsibility for the project according to DFAT rules, providing a governance role and assists in the areas of planning, monitoring, evaluating and auditing to ensure the projects are carried out to DFAT requirements.

CONTENTSBEATRICE’SSTORY
8-month-old Beatrice Kobusige arrived early on a Monday morning with a 4-day history of cough, reduced appetite, and fever. Beatrice’s mother explained that she had first tried a traditional herbal liquid, and when Beatrice did not improve she took her to their local clinic. Unfortunately, the clinic staff did not correctly diagnose Beatrice’s condition and provided the family with an inappropriate antibiotic. Beatrice continued to deteriorate.
It was then her mother brought Beatrice to the Maranatha Health Centre. Fortunately for Beatrice they made it to Maranatha in time. Beatrice was quickly diagnosed with pneumonia, started on the correct IV antibiotic therapy, and given IV fluids and supplemental oxygen. As a result of the outstanding diagnosis and care of MH staff, Beatrice made a full recovery and was soon the loudest, child on the ward - making all the staff laugh along with her!
