T he Western Carolina University College of Health Science and Department
of Campus Recreation & Wellness are proud to announce the 10th Annual Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon and 5K will be held on Saturday April 4th, 2020. We hope to continue increased involvement from the community in this year’s race to give local businesses great exposure, while enhancing each participant’s experience.
The Valley of the Lilies event has the unique benefit of continued support from Western Carolina University. This support allows us an opportunity to enhance the fitness and wellness of the campus and surrounding communities, while also increasing opportunities for students to grow in their professional development.
Proceeds from the event support student professional development and travel. These funds give students the opportunities to attend workshops, conferences, seminars, and certification courses in various academic fields or extracurricular areas. These experiences help them grow professionally, and allow the time to interact with students, faculty and professionals which aid in their career networking.

“I’ve participated in many running events over the years. Valley of the Lilies is one of my favorites! The student volunteers were exceptional during the event. Thank you for the welcoming atmosphere and well-organized run!”
“The race was so well-organized, and I have run dozens of races. Also, the large presence of voluneers, especially during
those miles far from campus, were so encouraging and helpful. The volunteers’ cheers and great attitudes were also greatly
appreciated (especially at the top of the Catamount Climb)!”
“Great race, well-organized with very enthusiastic volunteers. Race was tough coming from Houston, but very pretty.”
“Had a wonderful time at the race. I can’t wait to continue to participate in this event throughout the upcoming years.”
“What stood out for me were the volunteers’ enthusiasm and helpfulness and the quality of the t-shirts. Finish line was also good. The volunteers
should be commended. Thank you!”

My name is Ashley Layland, and I am a biology major, a chemistry minor, and a senior at WCU. I decided to get my yoga certification so that I would be a more versatile employee as a Group X instructor at the CRC. I also wanted the certification because it will be something that I will continue to renew throughout my life, and I plan on teaching yoga during graduate school and throughout life. I would not have been able to earn this certification without the Valley of the Lilies Scholorship fund, and I wouldn’t have even considered it. But with this scholarship, I am now able to work more hours doing something that I love! The information I have learned about the human body has also helped in some of my anatomy
classes as well as interpersonal interactions throughout my life. It’s great to know that people in my community have invested in my professional development.
