PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES

INTRODUCTION OF THE IChO

THE INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD (IChO) IS A HIGHLYPRESTIGIOUS COMPETITION FOR THE MOST GIFTED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

The students’ performance at the Olympiad is assessed by an international jury, whose academic members come from all over the world. There are usually about 300 students and 250 academics participating in this friendly competition coming from nearly 80 countries of all continents, such as France, Germany, Russia, China, the US and Australia. The students participating in this event will later become superior chemists in the academic or private sectors. The total number of people participating as students, international jurors, guests and organisers is 800 people. The event takes eleven days

and includes laboratory and theoretical tasks in chemistry combined with social events and excursions. In July 2018 the 50th Olympiad will be co-organised by the Czech and Slovak Republics (the first IChO was hosted by Czechoslovakia in 1968). The organization of the International Chemistry Olympiad is a great privilege and it is highly appreciated by the host countries. Nobel prize winners or other top representatives of the host countries usually take up patronage over the event. In 2017 Thailand was the organiser and the IChO enjoyed the patronage of the Thai Royal Family.

INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT

The main institutional support of the 50th IChO will be provided by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Slovak Ministry of Education, Science and Research and Sports. Patronage has also been provided by the Czech Olympic Committee. It is also expected that several

senior government representatives of both countries will give patronage to the Olympiad which will be organized by the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague and the Comenius Universityin Bratislava.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Grants provided by the Ministries only cover the basic costs associated with the technical programme, accommodation and transport of the participants. The budget for the social programme and associated events depends, as usual, on the support provided by sponsors, who, as a matter of fact, greatly contribute to the success of the entire event. The main partners in the past included, for example, national financial institutions, Casio, Nestlé, BASF, DOW, Gedeon Richter, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Bayer and many others. If the fund-raising plan is fulfilled as expected thanks to your

generous sponsorship, the most talented students will be able to experience a visit to the Červený Kameň Castle with a banquet, an excursion to Banská Štiavnica and Kremnica, a day full of sports events in a leisure park outside of Bratislava, an excursion to the Český kras Protected Landscape Area, as well as guided tours of Prague and Bratislava. They will also visit the Prague ZOO, Solvay quarries, Prague Planetarium and Prague Castle. And as a farewell event they will be able to enjoy a river cruise on the Vltava with a gala dinner on board.
