1. Introduction Sport plays a vital part in school life: it is integral to the school’s social and learning environment. We should all recognize this and the way that RGS, through sport, reaches out into the wider community of which we are a part.

AsAs a School we recognise the key part that parents play in supporting both their children and the school in its sporting aims and we are grateful for this. The RGS Charter for Sport describes the values that we attach to sport and which we hope you will share.

RGS Charter for SportTeamTo join a school like RGS Worcester is to join a community and become part of a team. Like any community it thrives on the trust and commitment which members show to each other and to the community as a whole. ThisThis has a particular resonance within sport. We expect all our pupils to represent the school enthusiastically, with pride and to enjoy the experience.

CommitmentSatuSaturday is very much part of the school week during term time and we expect pupils to be available to represent the school when selected. Details of fixtures can be found in the school calendar, the website and the individual sport’s fixture list. There will occasionally be an event for which a pupil will have to miss a Saturday such as a wedding. With suitable notice, provision can be made to fill the gap and thereby give someone else an opportunity. However, requests for absence which are either late, or for relatively insignificantinsignificant events, such as a party, are contrary to our team ethic. Planned absences; should be requested in writing at least one week prior to the fixture concerned. All requests should be directed to Mr James Barker, Assistant Head, Co-curricular.

Unplanned withdrawals due to injury or illness; when possible should be communicated in person to the member of staff responsible for that team, last minute withdrawals (Saturday) should be phoned in on 07785 377148. This phone will be held by a senior member of staff who will ensure that the information is passed to the relevant staff.

ItIt should be noted that if individuals seek to make themselves unavailable for selection for one particular sport that this is directly contrary to the school ethos and that they leave themselves liable to be excluded from selection for other school teams.

AimOurOur twin aims are to strive for excellence whilst offering opportunities for all. Our sporting provision is broad and our fixture lists strong. We aim for success both as a team and individually, but in aiming for this we recognise that success is not simply measured by statistical results. The quality of our play; the pleasure derived from competing; fulfilment and achievement at an individual level; friendship and team spirit: these are outcomes from sport which we value equally highly.

AttitudeWWe have chosen four words to describe the personal qualities which we hope our pupils will display in their sporting endeavours: Resolute, Gracious, Selfless, Willing. To help everyone remember them you will notice that their first letters are the school’s initials! Sport counts for nothing in school if it is not seen within the broader context of education. These are good values and we hope that parents will share and reinforce them whilst supporting their children as they represent the school.

RespectRespectRespect covers many areas: match officials, opponents, team members, staff, spectators, equipment, facilities (including for example the mini-bus or coach being used for away matches) and the sport itself. To show respect is to be aware of what is happening around you, to maintain a sense of perspective. As such it is central to what sport should mean to the individuals who take part, especially in an educational environment.

2. Specific Expectations of PupilsPupil Uniform and Kit

• It is vitally important that our teams take pride in their appearance both when travelling to venues and when playing. Please insist on the very highest standards.• • There is some variation between what each sport requires, but the minimum requirement when travelling to and from fixtures, home and away, is school uniform or a full school tracksuit.• In addition to the everyday PE and games kit there are match kits available for boys and girls. • • Match kits are exactly that and must not be worn other than for matches.• Pupils may travel home either in school uniform or in a full school tracksuit

Pupil conduct

• The games field is an extension of the school environment. Pupil conduct should reflect this. • • Respect for staff, fellow and visiting pupils, and members of the public is paramount.• Transgressions will be treated in the usual way using •

negatives and detentions as appropriate.• Equally, positive behaviour will be rewarded with commendations, particularly unsolicited examples of helpfulness or pleasing behaviour.

Pupil Attendance and Unavailability

• Saturday sport, fixtures in general and practices are central to school life. The Charter for Sports makes clear the school's expectations in this regard.•• As a school, we believe to is very important that the pupils learn responsibility for managing their time, commitments and obligations.•• In this respect, we expect individual pupils to take responsibility for ensuring that the relevant people are informed, clearly and in good time, if they are unable to attend a fixture or practice. Ideally, we would like notification of this planned absence in writing at the start of term. Failing this, we would certainly expect a week's clear notice. This letter should be addressed to Mr Barker, Assistant Head Co-CurriculaCo-Curricular.

Specifically:

• If a pupil is unwell and not in school on the Friday preceding a match then they are deemed unavailable for that match. In this case, an email should be sent as soon as possible to the teacher in charge of the relevant team.• If a pupil falls ill between leaving school and the match starting, we would ask that the school be informed as soon as possible in order that a replacement may be found. In the first instance (on the Friday) the communication should be by email to the teacher in charge of the relevant team. If the illness occurs overnight, or on Saturday morning, please phone the match day phone number 07785 377148. This willwill enable the Senior Duty Teacher to inform the relevant staff. Please note that this phone is for weekend use only.

3. School Team Sports Available by Term and Year Group.

InIn providing such a wide choice, sometimes clashes occur. As far as possible, such clashes are resolved with the best interests of the pupils in mind. However, the school has to prioritise certain sports in keeping with established fixture lists. In this respect the school asks that parents respect the school’s desire to put a team ethos first.

4. Organisation of Games Afternoons and After School Practices

For games afternoons pupils are changed ready to start at 1415 and leave at 1545. After school practices start at 1600. Finish times vary by age, sport and location between 1700 and 1730.

5. The Athletic Development Programme (ADP)

TheThe Athletic Development Programme (ADP) is a sports development programme unique to RGS Worcester and is aimed at identifying and supporting our top athletes across a wide aim of age groups and sporting backgrounds. We pick those athletes who exhibit a great personal potential for success and who we believe can lead and inspire a passion for sport in those around them.

TheThe ADP model looks to help guide and mentor the participant to understand and optimise their environment fully; to set specific goals and to develop their sporting potential in a safe, fun and enjoyable atmosphere. The programme helps the athlete reflect upon a variety of environmental factors that we believe ultimately promote development and success.

Coaching PhilosophyAt the heart of the ADP is the coaching philosophy of innovation, inspiration and integrity.

Innovation:Innovation: We look to the very latest in sports coaching and development models and techniques from around the world and from a variety of different sporting backgrounds. We are proactive in looking to develop our own methods of coaching and development incorporating these skills to ensure that our programme is exciting and constantly adapting to suit our participants’ needs.

Inspirational:Inspirational: We seek to maintain and encourage the passion and enjoyment of sport. We promote self-reliance, team work and leadership skills from the participant. Sport is all about passion and enjoyment and that is at the heart of what we encourage. Our coaches share a passion for sport and for working with younger sportsmen and women. In addition we look to the athlete to act as a role model in encouragingencouraging others to try and enjoy sport and to develop their own sporting abilities.

Integrity: Athlete welfare is of the utmost importance and much of the programme is aimed at ensuring the athlete is injury free, happy and enjoying sport and school life in general. We will never compromise these values.

Who is suitable for the programme:

TheThe ADP is a personalised tool in so far as the benefits and requirements of one athlete may not be shared by another. As such, the programme coordinator works with each athlete individually in agreeing a programme, having regard for their sporting level and needs. This programme may include some of the following elements which have been used in the ADP so far:

•• A liaison between staff, parents, coaches and external sports bodies. • Personalised coaching within chosen sports .• Personalised Strength & Conditioning support – including prehab and rehab programmes and nutritional support. • Physiotherapy support provided through new links with 206 Physiotherapy based in Worcester. •• Sporting Mentor Programme: Senior athletes within the school working with our younger candidates• Workshops: Meeting with other ADP participants for team building exercises, internal and external presentations and pastoral support. Examples have included goal setting, nutrition, improving performance, sports psychology.•• Extensive Profiling and base level testing: Able to track progress, understand psychological preferences •• Candidates are nominated to the Director of Sport by respective Head Coaches at the start of the year. Those candidates in the school on a Sports Award are included within the ADP but it is not exclusive to this group. Other pupils may be nominated if we feel they are suitable for the ADP.

TheThe school expects the ADP candidates to be at the forefront of driving school sport forward. They will need to represent the school as a matter of priority as well as acting as role models and leaders within their sporting fields.

7. FacilitiesThe third part of the RGS sporting mix, which is added to excellent coaching and fully committed pupils, is facilities.

Flagge Meadow- Two rugby or football pitches used by the senior teams-- Cricket square used by the senior teams, and as a first-class pitch by Worcestershire CCC when New Road is flooded- Pavilion, which contains changing rooms, plus kitchen and entertaining room

St Oswald’s- Two rugby or football pitches- Grass running track, plus field events

Outdoor courtsOutdoor courts- Four all-weather netball courts with padded posts- Four tennis courts

Astroturfs- Full sized, floodlit pitch at RGS The Grange – hockey, five-a-side football- Small training pitch within the main school grounds

Tom Savage Sports Hall- Oversized sports hall for PE and games- Oversized sports hall for PE and games- Netball, badminton- Indoor cricket pitch and nets- Changing rooms and viewing balcony for 100

Cobham Hall - Sports hall for PE and games- Netball, badminton, trampolining and skills-coaching

Fitness Suite- 40 pieces of equipment covering the full gambit of cardiovascular and resistance equipment- F- Free weights- Workout area- Rowing ‘ergo’ machines x 5- Manned with specialist staff

River Severn- Rowing boathouse shared within Worcester Rowing Club’sEights, quads, single sculls and octuples- - Training equipment
