WELCOMEWhat a long, strange trip this has been indeed! While none of us could have predicted that we wouldbe hosting a “virtual expo”, I am thrilled and grateful to all for having embraced the idea and helpedmake it a reality. Thank you to my incredible team that has gone above and beyond to execute this ina very short time. To my dealers and valued partners; for your flexibility and resilience in adapting tothe current normal – in particular the good people at eBay for sharing their knowledge, resources andcommitment to the hobby to co-create an amazing Expo. Finally, to the community of fans andcollectors (now more than 4,000strong) who have signed up toattend this first ever Virtual Expo– it’s great to see how much passionfuels the collectibles hobby. Let’s all enjoy this unique experienceand have fun buying and sellingwith old and new collector friendsfrom Canada, the USA and beyond.Look forward to “seeing” you allthis weekend! Steve Menzie

There is quite a buzz over a new book in thevintage collectibles hobby that will see its premierat the Sport Card Expo & Memorabilia Expo this spring.

“The Golden Years”, a long overdue and muchanticipated book, is about the St. Lawrence StarchCompany and its Bee Hive Golden Corn Syruphockey picture promotion that ran from 1934 to 1968.

Venerated Ontario natives and “hockey-tenured”Bee Hive historians, Don Pillar and Aubrey Ferguson, have been “busy bees” for years, buzzing aroundaccumulating all the myriad of information to helppollinate this book.

The monumental task of putting this publicationtogether in its unrelenting detail was a harrowingexercise and the release of this book is nothingshy of a hobby milestone event.

“The Bee Hive hockey picture promotion ran for aspan of 35 years and in terms of longevity, it wasundeniably the most successful consumer promotionin Canadian history. Clearly the promotion is deservingof being chronicled for that accomplishment alone, but that’s not why we wrote this book.

The simple truth is, as passionate Bee Hivecollectors, we wrote this book more for ourselvesthan for anyone else. We simply wanted to piecetogether everything that we’ve learned about theBee Hive picture promotion and to share it withlike-minded collectors.”

Some background about the co-authors:

Don Pillar: “Growing up in suburban Toronto, Icollected virtually everything—pop bottle caps, stamps, coins, comic books, chewing gum cards,CHUM charts, matchbook covers, hockey coins, etc…Like many of my childhood pals, I also collectedBee Hive pictures. Being a devout Leafs fan, mycollection was limited to pictures of the TorontoMaple Leafs. Dick Duff was my favourite player andI considered his picture to be the centrepiece ofthe collection displayed on my bedroom wall.

It wasn’t until more than three decades later in thelate 1980s that Bee Hive pictures unexpectedlyre-entered my life. While ordering a new batteryfor my tractor at a farm equipment dealership, Ihappened to glance at the notice board where therewas an advertisement for Bee Hive hockey pictures. My curiosity piqued, I learned that the owner of thedealership wished to sell his approximately onehundred Bee Hive pictures. I left the dealership witha new tractor battery and a small, reclaimed pieceof my childhood. I was about to re-enter thewonderful hobby of Bee Hive collecting”.

Aubrey Ferguson: “Participation in the Bee Hivepromotion offered this farmboy the ability to reachbeyond the isolation of a 100 person hamlet insouthern Ontario, unimaginably distant from Torontoin the late 1950s. The general store in our village didnot sell packaged confectionery such as chewinggum with trading cards so Bee Hive pictures offereda unique window into the world of hockey. As ayoung boy, I would draft a letter to the St. LawrenceStarch Company requesting the picture of a favouritehockey player that Foster Hewitt had mentioned ona recent Saturday night radio broadcast in exchangefor the required token from the Bee Hive corn syruppackage and the price of a stamp.

Unlike so many other collectors, my collection wasnot discarded but carefully stored by mygrandparents until I was living on my own. After Igot married, my wife discovered my chocolate boxfull of Bee Hive pictures, identical to the ones thather brother had collected when they were growing

up in Rouyn, Quebec. She encouraged me tocomplete the set, or at least that’s how I rememberit now. My hunt for Bee Hives had been reawakenedand continues today”.

This landmark publication of 300 pages is a 9” x 11”coffee table style book with quality paper, highresolution images and a hard cover format. Thebook has individual pictures of all 1,025 “Bee Hives”.In addition, there are over 400 related images (ads, player lists, Company correspondence, redemptionpieces, etc.) that complete the story of St. LawrenceStarch’s 35 year Bee Hive picture promotion.Don and Aubrey will be in Toronto for the Expooffering their book to the public. Be sure to dropby, meet the authors and purchase a signed copy($50) as it is limited to only 750 copies. Be sure toget a copy as “The Golden Years” book will besnapped up by collectors, and like proverbial beesto honey, it won’t last long!

The 1988-89 season was a simple time for hockeycard collectors. There were only two mainstreamsets, and the words “hockey cards” and “investments”weren’t uttered in the same breath back then. Here is a look back at the 10 best hockey cards fromthe ’88-89 season. These are not necessarily therarest or most valuable; rather, these are significantcards worthy for any hockey card collection.

1. 1988-89 Topps #120: Wayne GretzkyWayne Gretzky’s trade from the Oilers to the Kings isthe most important trade in hockey history, andarguably, in all of sports. So significant was thistrade that Topps didn’t show The Great One in anOilers sweater, with the text “Now with Los Angeles”superimposed on his card in the 1988-89 Topps set.Nor did they crudely repaint his photograph likethey had done to so many other cards over theprevious 40 years. Instead, Topps used a photo ofGretzky from a press conference the day of thetrade. It is Gretzky’s first card with the Kings, butalso the first trading card to use a press conferencephoto, which became an acceptable practice forcard companies in the years that followed.

2. 1988-89 ProCards AHL/IHL: Ed BelfourDuring the 1988-89 season, ProCards made teamsets of 14 AHL teams and five IHL teams, for a totalof 465 cards — that’s larger than the 1988-89 Topps

and O-Pee-Chee sets combined! Many future NHLstars were found in this set, but perhaps none moreimportant than that of Saginaw Hawks’ goalie EdBelfour. This card isn’t necessarily hard to find butis a great “pre-rookie” of a future NHL legend.

3. 1988-89 O-Pee-Chee #66: Brett HullBrett Hull had cards in both the Topps and O-Pee-Cheehockey sets that year, but the Topps card wasdouble-printed, making it much easier to find —and thus, the O-Pee-Chee version is scarcer bycomparison. Hull went on to be one of the greatestgoal scorers of all-time.

4. 1988-89 Quebec Nordiques: Joe SakicJoe Sakic made his NHL debut in the 1988-89 seasonbut didn’t get a rookie card until the next year. Hewas however, included in the 1988-89 Nordiquesteam-issued card set. Sakic is the 9th all-time leadingscorer in NHL history and a member of the HockeyHall of Fame. Although an injury nixed his chancesof winning the Calder Trophy, Sakic is arguably thebest rookie to emerge from the 1988-89 season, sothis card makes a nice, harder-to-find alternate tohis 1989-90 Topps and O-Pee-Chee rookie cards, which were printed by the truckload.

5. 1988-89 O-Pee-Chee #61: Bob ProbertFrom roughly 1990 to 1994, Bob Probert was theundisputed heavyweight enforcer in the NHL. Hecould also score and even played in an NHL All-StarGame. Probert was a formidable fighter up untilthe end of his career in 2002 and remains a cultfavorite nearly 10 years after his untimely death.Probert’s 1988-89 Topps rookie card was double-printed, making the O-Pee-Chee version a bit pricierby comparison.

6. 1988-89 ProCards AHL/IHL: Mark RecchiMark Recchi scored 1533 points in 1652 regular-season games, won the Stanley Cup during threedifferent decades (1991, 2006, 2011) and is theoldest player to score a goal in the Stanley Cup Finals. As remarkable as his career was, Recchi’s “pre-RC”in the 1988-89 ProCards AHL/IHL set is tame bycomparison. However, this card does pre-dateRecchi’s rookie cards by a full two years.

7. 1988-89 Panini Stickers #301: Brian Leetch Brian Leetch won the Calder Trophy in 1989 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. Like Sakic, Leetch also has his official rookie card in the 1989-90 Topps and O-Pee-Chee sets.A nice “pre-RC” of the Hall of Fame blueliner is foundin the 1988-89 Panini Hockey sticker set, which showshim from his post-Olympic stint with the Rangersat the close of the 1987-88 season.

Cont’d8. 1988-89 Los Angeles Kings: Wayne GretzkyNot long after Topps’ cardof Gretzky came out, theKings issued a team set, whichhad the first card to showGretzky in a game with theKings. Technically, the photois from a pregame skate, asevidenced by the unfastenedchin strap on Gretzky’s Jofahelmet. Regardless, this isan offbeat, team-issuedcard of hockey’s greatest scorer.

9. 1988-89 Esso NHL All-Star Collection: Bobby OrrBobby Orr was the greatest defenseman of all-time,and one of the most exciting players to watch. His1988-89 Esso NHL All-Stars card is exciting, too, because only six cards of Orr were issued betweenhis retirement in 1978 and the hockey card boomof 1990-91. After that, it became a normal practiceto issue cards of retired greats, but back in 1988-89,it was a novel concept.

10. 1988-89 Oilers 10th Anniversary #115: Jim CorsiJim Corsi played for the Oilers in 1979-80. He didn’tget a hockey card until 1988-89, when the Oilersissued a 164-card set of every single player to suitup for Edmonton during its 10 years in the NHL.What makes this card so special is that “Corsi” isan advance hockey statistic, devised by and namedafter the former goaltender. No stat geek oranalytics nerd should be without this card.
