the driver to hook them up, and the driver doesn’t have to lean over them and get into their personal space,” Mr. Nelson said.

Benefits of the new system, according to SCAT officials, include additional safe-ty for the disabled rider, ease of secure-ment for drivers, added independence for mobility riders, quicker boarding and a no-hassle maintenance program.

Passengers who have already tried the new system have already filled out com-ment cards with positive reviews, Mr. Nel-son said.

“We transport more passengers in wheelchairs than most systems do between our contract routes and fixed routes and para-transit routes,” Mr. Nel-son said. “So, on [many] buses that we have, we have gotten the most wheelchair

positions that we can. Some big buses have four wheelchair stations, and some of our small buses actually have up to six.”

As part of the pilot program, Q’Straint has added a feature on the buses carrying QUANTUM stations that count the num-ber of times the stations have been used.

“Ours has been used a lot more than normal in these pilot projects,” Mr. Nel-son said, “which says that we have a lot of wheelchair passengers, more than many transit systems transport, but also that the passengers like them. The buses have other standard wheelchair positions but they’ve chosen to go on this. So, that’s tell-ing me that they’re selecting it and like it.”

While QUANTUM is still in its early stages for SCAT, Mr. Nelson said the tran-sit agency plans to buy at least three new buses in the next year-and-a-half that will feature the new seating station.

Officials are encouraging community members to experience the new system by calling (321) 635-7815 Ext. 201.

first annual awards ceremony, which is an evening held to honor cadets for their hard work and excellence throughout the year.

“[At the ceremony,] we were honored to have presenters from many branches of military service, as well as our keynote speaker, a retired World War II and Korean War Army veteran, who shared with our cadets what his military service has meant throughout his life,” Mrs. Parker said.

One of the leading Cadets in the pro-gram, according to Mrs. Parker, is PO1 Gage Harrison.

“I have been most impressed with the growth and development of PO1 Gage Harrison over this part year,” Mrs. Harri-son said. “He is our ship’s Leading Petty Officer, and has grown both as a leader and as a young man over this past year, serving as a mentor to our younger cadets. He is a Captain in our sailing program and was the recipient of our Best Mariner Award, the Sons of the American Revolution Award, and was chosen as our Sea Cadet of the Year.”

The Sea Cadets program is focused on core values, life skills, and comradery that

provides its participants with the tools needed to succeed in today’s world.

“In this day and age, our adolescents are faced with challenges in every facet of life, as they are faced with peer pressure, vio-lence, the constant presence of social media, and constant negativity in the news,” Mrs. Parker explained. “Our cadets are encouraged to look beyond these nega-tive influences and bring those Navy Core Values to the world around them. Our Operations Team works diligently to keep our cadets fit and healthy through physical fitness, [and] our Training Team comes together to teach the cadets real life skills, military history, and leadership. Our cadets [also] have the opportunity to attend summer training contingents where they can experience training that covers all aspects of military careers, from culinary, to medical, to special ops.

“Many of the cadets I have had the plea-sure of working with over the years have gone on to military service, but service is never an expectation,” Mrs. Parker added. “The skills taught are life skills that any young man or woman can bring with them into their chosen career path.”

Florida Tech scientists discover new particle evidence

BREVARD COUNTY – Scientists at Florida Institute of Technology have once again been at the front lines of scientific discovery, this time in Switzerland.

Florida Tech scientists recently partici-pated in an experiment at the Large Had-ron Collider, in cooperation with CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, the European Organization for Nuclear Research), which is the most cut-ting-edge organization of scientific inqui-ry into molecular and quantum physics.

“Using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector, which acts as a giant, high-speed camera taking 3-D ‘photographs’ of parti-cle collisions from all directions up to 40 million times each second, scientists at the CERN-based LHC announced find-ings that reveal how strongly the Higgs boson [particle] interacts with the heavi-est known elementary particle, the ‘top quark,’” Florida Tech officials stated.

The testing has confirmed through experiment the Standard Model theory, an overarching theory in physics that

describes the basic components of matter and the forces that govern their interac-

tions. Within the Standard Model, the Higgs boson particle can ‘couple’ to parti-cles called ‘fermions,’ the heaviest of which is the ‘top quark’ particle.

“Generally, scientists can measure the coupling strength of the Higgs boson to fermions by measuring the decay rate of the Higgs boson to other lighter particles,” Florida Tech officials stated. “But, because the Higgs boson cannot decay into a pair of top quarks, the only way to measure this coupling is to study the production of a Higgs boson in associations with top quarks.”

The recent experiment provided verifi-able evidence that the Standard Model theory is correct with regards to top quark physics, which is the first time that the event has been observed.

The findings were published in the sci-entific journal, Physical Review Letters.

Hurricanes cause more damage than reader realizes

This is in response to the person who moved here from Chicago, and is upset because insurance won’t give him a dis-count because of “ceiling glass windows” — better known as skylights.

You obviously don’t understand the damage that hurricanes can cause.

Any flying object could easily fly through the skylights.

You stated the answer to your problem in your own rant.

Insurance companies would give a dis-count if house is completely protected. Skylights are not protected, therefore, house is not completely protected.

You probably already have saved much more money than your insurance dis-count by moving here — cost of living, cheaper heating bills, not having to buy snow tires, shovels, boots, mittens, etc.

However, my real dilemma is how you turn a problem with your insurance com-pany into a rant about Trump supporters.

Here are my suggestions for you: move to a different house without skylights; check with other insurance companies; hire a roofer to get rid of the skylights; or better yet, go back to Chicago where you don’t have to deal with hurricanes.

Maybe you prefer dealing with bad weather, high taxes and the worry of being shot while walking down the street. Flori-da is not perfect for everyone

Please go to back to Chicago and take your uneducated political views with you.

Shortcut turned city property doesn't seem right

The woods behind Palm Bay's Winn

Dixie Plaza which has been used as a shortcut for walking or biking residents has become the dreaded felony zone and anybody using that path now risks an arrest for felony trespassing.

Because of problems with homeless I now have to ride my bike three miles round trip to go to the plaza and deal with reckless Palm Bay drivers and risk becom-ing a statistic or at least badly injured instead of a safe five-minute bike ride through the trail.

I understand something needed to be done, but to declare woods as city proper-ty and make it a felony and punish every-body for the negligent acts of a handful of homeless people?

Everyday I see speeding cars in my resi-dential neighborhood and elsewhere and reckless, dangerous drivers but Palm Bay police are more concerned with the felony zone . . . sitting back there like a bunch of stormtroopers looking for anybody going through.

We know the police have more import-ant things to do. At least when I get a car (soon enough I hope), I won't have to deal with this ridiculous situation anymore.

But in the meantime, I risk getting side swiped everyday and carrying groceries on a dangerous bike ride.

And I still wonder how they can make the woods city property?

We vote for others appointed by that person we are voting for

This country seems to have a penchant for putting itself in harms way. Another pipeline has exploded in West Virginia.

While the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s Eastern Regional Office identified the line as

TransCanada’s (the same company behind Keystone pipeline) Leach XPress Pipeline, placed into service this past February, the cause of the explosion is still unknown.

We’ve also had another leak in the Key-stone Pipeline (November 2017) where thousands of gallons of oil were lost.

I bring these two situations up to remind everyone that Florida does have natural gas pipelines. The Sabal Trail Pipeline, owned and operated by Sabal Transmission LLC and NextEra Energy, Inc. (FPL) run from Alabama into Flori-da.

Scott Pruitt the Environmental Protec-tion Administration Administrator, hav-ing been appointed by our President and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Secretary, Noah Valenstein, appointed by our Governor, are the peo-ple in charge of protecting residents from any unforeseen accidents that may occur here.

We need to think very carefully of the importance of these types of appoint-ments by those who we vote for. Not only are we voting in “the” person, but we’re implicitly voting for others appointed by that person.

Come election day we need to carefully consider our votes before casting our bal-lots.

Replacing hostility, violence with love will turn country around

With the ever increasing school shoot-ings, why is no one addressing the real issue of the breakdown of the family?

The number of children having to be removed from their homes by the courts on a monthly basis is staggering.

The psychological effects of an unstable home life on children is huge.

What is happening in our homes is being exposed in our crimes. Let's lobby and speak out for mentoring programs, parenting classes, counseling centers, etc. Let's lobby and speak out against the vio-lent movies and video games geared for children.

How this became a debate on our Sec-ond Amendment rights is political propa-ganda.

I would hope if my child had an arsenal of guns in his or her bedroom, I would know it!

We have seen many times how a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun so many times — thus saving lives. Out-lawing them will not eliminate crime any more than outlawing drugs eliminated

Hometown News – MELBOURNE – www.HometownNewsBrevard.com Friday, June 29, 2018 7

That is a fair question and one that requires comment. Notwithstand-ing the fact that about 50 percent of

us in Brevard County qualify as seniors, there are many other reasons why we should have articles that address senior issues.

For instance, I recently received several emails from friends who had had prob-lems ordering items on the Internet. They wanted me to discuss them so that our readers would not make the same mis-take. I agreed and will tackle that subject and several others that seniors need to know more about.

Internet orders. Here is an example; How many of you ladies have ordered a sample of a beauty cream because it looked to be a great purchase, something you could get at Sally’s? The cost is low, though the fine print may say otherwise. The cream arrives (two really small tubes) and several days later you get a bill for $90

per tube, when you thought the price was only $12 to cover mailing costs. This hap-pened to one person, who was let off the hook by the cosmetic company. Had the hook been set the cost would have been roughly $180. She was lucky, admitted it, and learned her lesson. Mostly she was upset with herself. The moral of the story is that if it looks too good to be true then it probably is, so be careful what you order.

Spectrum television. As a result of a call, we are working with Spectrum to provide a bundle of services for seniors. We would like to put together a group of channels that play shows of interest to

seniors, offered with other services at a set price to protect seniors on fixed incomes against the rapidly increasing costs of cable. A series of phone calls indicates the real problem will be getting to someone senior enough at Spectrum to make a decision that would help us. It certainly is worth a try and on our list of things to do.

Changing perception. Some people look at seniors as having too much, that their lives are fully funded until death, when in fact many live day to day even though they have tried to save for retire-ment. At the same time there are those who live continually on the edge, not sav-ing, buying expensive cars, often living beyond their means, and planning on someone else to pay the way until death. One thing is certain – we are an aging nation. Many seniors are not prepared for the future for whatever reason, and it goes against the way most of us live to ignore someone in need.

Action. Encouraging people to read what they order online is not a challeng-ing task, since it is something we can all do if we take the time. Developing a pack-age of cable services for seniors is doable though it might be a difficult sell. Chang-ing perceptions, on the other hand, is a whole other ball game but is probably the most important need due to the rapid aging of Americans. The information and education part of the Helping Seniors’ mission statement signifies this organiza-tion’s dedication to taking action, but require the support of readers to make such action a reality.

drug abuse.Let's drop the rhetoric and address

what is happening to our families and children in their homes.

Replacing the hostility and violence so often found there with nurturing love and care will turn this country around.

I will take climate change more seriously when I see changesTo "Do your part" . . . Look down and

up the street on trash day. You will see trash and recyclable con-

tainers at every house. Sometimes every other week.

My house has low-water usage toilet, shower, and washer: appliance and light-ing is energy efficient: car is economical:

cloth grocery bags: hung out clothes: last house had solar panels.

We are called conservative. Yes climate changes all the time. Two

years ago it was one of the coldest winters in the northern states.

Volcanic activity and forest fires are a big contributor of green house gas and we have been having both.

How about that meteorite that started the ice age.

I always will be suspicious when huge amount of money is being made and trad-ing hands for power and control. It's not always about the welfare of the human state.

Al Gore has received millions of dol-lars, and uses more energy annually than a six- to 10-member family.

When I see some changes in their behavior, than I will take it more serious-ly.

Son carries on father’s legacy with businessBREVARD COUNTY — Living in

Florida is a bit like being on vacation every day but when the summer tem-peratures rise, so do residents’ air con-ditioning needs.

Kabran Air-Conditioning and Heat-ing Inc. has been serving Brevard resi-dents for 34 years, beginning as a father-son venture. The business is located at 62 S. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach.

“[My father] went into business for himself in 1984 and I graduated high school in 1986, so for those two sum-mers leading up to graduation I worked with him as much as I could,” said Michael Kabran, son of the late Mickey Kabran, founder of the business. “I went to school for air conditioning and from there it went on, him and I.”

Mickey Kabran first started the Cocoa Beach air conditioning and heating business with one truck. Now, the company has expanded to a fleet of company trucks and loyal, long-term employees.

“We take pride in everything we do, we’re honest and we feel that we’re priced competitively,” Mr. Kabran said. “We know our business. We stay on top of technology and make sure we’re offering the products that are most current to customers.”

Kabran Air-Conditioning and Heat-ing Inc. offers customers and residents to join its “Cool Club,” with year-long benefits such as priority scheduling, two comprehensive tune ups a year, free replacement of hurricane brackets when rusted through, discounts, sav-ings and more.

The business services residential needs, using Carrier units, and can provide expert service on all system brands by factory-trained technicians.

“My father was very well-known in the community,” Mr. Kabran said. “We’re still strong moving forward, and I’d like to give credit to my dad for run-ning this business. He was very good at what he did. He was mechanical and could fix anything, so I was around him all the time and I picked up a lot of knowledge from him.

BREVARD COUNTY — Tropical weath-er in the state of Florida is a way of life. The Sunshine State leads the nation in landfalling hurricanes with nearly 120 – almost double that of Texas, which ranks second on the infamous list. Properly preparing for hurri-cane season now can save you and your employees unwanted stress when a storm has its eyes set on the state. The key is having a plan in place for when that time comes. Here are some tips to help get you going.

Plan aheadEnsure your employees’ contact informa-

tion is up to date. Have a plan in place to communicate after

the storm passes, e.g. set up a telephone num-ber with a recorded message that will be reg-ularly updated to inform employees of the status of company operations.

Consider developing a system to authorize re-entry to company facilities after a storm, e.g. I.D. cards and vehicle permits.

Establish a safe area away from exterior glass windows and doors if you plan to take shelter at your business.

Determine if your business is in a flood and/or evacuation zone and review evacua-tion routes, designating an emergency tem-porary site.

Identify what you need to secure your building, important equipment and who will help; outline specific tasks and conduct a training session.

Photograph or record your building or office – inside and out – for insurance pur-

poses. Have all trees and vegetation near power

lines trimmed by specially trained line-clear-ing professionals to minimize their potential impact on your business and neighboring businesses.

Make sure debris is cleared prior to a hur-ricane warning announcement – trash pick-up will be suspended during this time. Tree limbs and branches are the leading cause of outages and can become airborne during a storm.

Bookmark FPL.com/outage and save 1-800-4OUTAGE to your cell phone to report and check the status of your resto-ration.

Download the FPL Mobile App in the App Store or Google Play, or text the word “App” to MyFPL (69375).

Save your FPL account number to the

notes section of your cell phone, or keep a copy of your FPL bill – which has your account number on it.

Update the phone number and email address on your FPL account.

Consider installing a generator in case of power outages.

Generator safety Read and follow all the manufacturer’s

guidelines when using a generator to avoid dangerous shortcuts and ensure safe opera-tion.

DO NOT directly connect your generator to your business’s breaker or fuse box. Power from a generator connected to a business’s wiring will “back feed” into utility lines – which can severely injure or kill a neighbor or

“It was an awesome experience work-ing with my dad,” he continued. “We were fortunate enough to just really enhance each other. I had skills he

didn’t have, he had skills I didn’t have, and the skills we had together, we were super strong in.”

Mr. Kabran added that he feels he has a strong team to work with, and is comfortable with changing and inno-vating the way he does business.

Since his father’s passing in 2014, Mr. Kabran had remodeled and cleaned

up the business from the ground up, which isn’t too common in the busi-nesses around that area.

With his son currently attending air conditioning school, Mr. Kabran said he hopes his son will join him in the family business but there will be no pressure.

BREVARD COUNTY — Get a 30-day supply of necessary medications.

If you are taking prescription medications and normally purchase them from your local pharmacy, try to have a 30-day supply on hand.

This is not as easy as it sounds — many insurance companies will not authorize the filling of additional days or months’ worth of a medication unless ordered by the state to do so in emergency situations, such as natural disasters.

Make your medication plan now. This plan should include speaking with a health insur-ance representative, pharmacist or your phy-sician about options to acquire extra medica-tions, one of which may include paying cash for your 30-day supply.

Call your dialysis center for a temporary

plan of care. If you are on dialysis, call your dialysis cen-

ter to make a plan of action for your care. Do not miss a treatment prior to bad

weather and make sure to follow your doc-tor-ordered diet very closely. Read the patient care information provided to you by your doctor. It includes medical information to assist you and phone numbers to the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Network.

Only your doctor can recommend if it is medically safe for you to miss treatments and can advise you on whether or not you should be admitted to a hospital during a hurricane. Special needs shelters do not offer dialysis and some centers may be closed during a hurricane.

When the storm passes, contact your dial-ysis center for further instructions or go to your hospital for short-term care if your cen-ter is closed.

The hospital is not a county shelter.County shelters are designated throughout

the county, mostly in elementary schools. The hospital is not a designated shelter and does not take evacuees. For more helpful

information visit http://www.brevardcounty.us/emergencymanagement/preparedness/shel-ters.

If you are oxygen dependent, make shel-

ter arrangements. You may be eligible for care at a special

needs shelter, based on your medical needs and availability. If you are an oxygen-depen-dent person, be sure to get your oxygen tanks filled. You should try to have two days’ worth of oxygen on hand. Also make shelter arrangements now.

If you do not plan to evacuate, contact the

Brevard County Office of Emergency Man-agement at (321) 637-6670 for more infor-mation on how to register for special needs shelter. If you wait until a hurricane hits to make shelter arrangements, it will be too late.

General Preparation for a Hurricane. For complete information on what you can

do to prepare for a disaster or hurricane, go online to the Brevard County Office of Emer-gency Management Web site at www.bre-vardcounty.us/EOC. You will find valuable information to help prepare your home and family before a hurricane strikes.

utility crew working to restore power. DO NOT run generators inside your busi-

ness or garage, as they produce potentially deadly carbon monoxide fumes.

Keep generators away from all open win-dows to prevent the fumes from entering your business.

Buy a battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm, which will alert you if carbon-monox-ide levels become dangerous.

Turn off all connected appliances before starting your generator.

Turn connected appliances on one at a time, never exceeding the generator’s rated wattage.

DO NOT touch a generator if you are wet, standing in water or on damp ground.

NEVER refuel a hot generator or one that is running – hot engine parts or exhaust can ignite gasoline.

Ensure you have plenty of gas safely stored in gas containers to operate your generator.

Before a storm: Pay attention to instructions from public

officials and the media. Secure the exterior of your office and pro-

tect interior furniture: Identify outdoor equipment, materials and

structures that could become airborne and move them to a safe location.

Park vehicles in safe, protected areas such as a covered garage. o Secure doors, windows and other openings.

Move items away from the windows. o Lock drawers and filing cabinets.

Unplug all lamps, radios, computers and equipment in case of a power surge; cover important equipment with plastic bags.

Gather any important supplies and docu-ments.

Charge your cell phone and keep it ready by obtaining portable chargers.

Make multiple back-ups of computer files and data and store records off premises.

Run a special voice message informing employees and customers on the status of company operations.

Close your offices with sufficient time to allow employees to secure their own homes, and inform clients that you’re closing early

and when you plan to reopen.

After a storm: Make your safety and the safety of your

employees a priority. DO NOT travel, or ask employees to trav-

el, until it is safe to do so. Watch for downed power lines. Call 911 or

FPL at 1-800-4OUTAGE to report fallen power lines that present a clear and immi-nent danger. DO NOT attempt to touch any power lines. Always assume that every power line is energized.

Read and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines if you use a portable generator. Remember to NEVER wire your generator to your breaker or fuse box – the power you generate may flow back into power lines causing severe injury or death.

Turn off your circuit breakers, disconnect all electrical appliances and turn off all wall switches immediately in case of interior water damage. Remember to never stand in water while operating switches or unplugging any electrical device.

Stay away from standing water and debris, which could conceal a live wire.

DO NOT venture out in the dark because you might not see a downed power line that could be energized and dangerous.

Make emergency repairs only when it is safe to do so. Repairs that prevent looting or further damage should have top priority, but only if the repair can be done safely.

Take inventory to determine and record losses – based off the photos and recordings you took for insurance purposes.

BREVARD COUNTY — When the United States of America’s “Founding Fathers” signed the Declaration of Inde-pendence on July 4, 1776, they had no idea just how big this country would amass to, or just how big Americans could party in celebration.

Here in Brevard County, multiple municipalities have free events planned from Titusville’s “Red, White and Boom” at Sandpoint Park on July 4 from 7 to 10 p.m., with a firework show starting at 9:15 p.m., to Palm Bay’s Fourth of July celebration at Eastern Florida State College’s Palm Bay campus from 4 to 9 p.m.

Although Hometown News has gathered a list of countywide events found in this paper, here is a spotlight on some free activities centered around or on Indepen-dence Day itself.

“Suntree Stars and Stripes” is a fami-ly-fun event scheduled for Sunday, July 1 starting at 4:30 p.m. at Suntree United Methodist Church, 7400 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne.

Activities will include a bounce house, old-fashioned games, face painting and a balloon artist for the kids. Firefighters from Brevard County Fire Rescue Station No. 80 will also be in attendance with one of its fire engines.

A free dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. with hot dogs and hamburgers, cookies and lemonade.

Then, Staci Cleveland will lead the Mel-bourne Municipal Band and Festival Cho-

rus in a concert with the Suntree United Methodist Chancel Choir will start indoors at 6:30 p.m.

“What's there not to love about food, fel-lowship and fantastic patriotic music?” said Dr. Robert E. Lamb, director of traditional music at Suntree United Methodist Church. “This is our third year to offer the event. Musically, our concert attendance grew from the first to the second year – I hope the same is true of our third year, too!”

Dr. Lamb added that this year a new fea-ture of the concert includes the choir’s per-formance of gospel music, which will not be accompanied by the Melbourne Munic-ipal Band.

“Each year this event seems to get a little bit bigger,” said Augie Allen, festival coor-dinator. “We’re inviting some of our part-nership organizations, like Family Prom-ise, to come out and provide information to our community about the work they are doing to improve lives in our community.

“We’ll also be showcasing our communi-ty garden that has doubled in size and is on the grounds right next to the festivities,” Mr. Allen continued. “This is a great opportunity to connect our community with some amazing organizations that are seeking to love our neighbors in extraordi-nary ways!”

The Blue Sky Community Garden has been a labor of love by volunteers who wish to “share their passions for gardening

organic food and helping others,” accord-ing to Mr. Allen. He added that fresh pro-duce from the garden is being sent to local soup kitchens and ministries that feed the homeless in our county.

For more information about the event, call (321) 242-2585.

On July 4, in a “God Bless the USA” event, Staci Cleveland will again conduct the Melbourne Municipal Band and Festi-val Chorus in a patriotic concert at East-minster Presbyterian Church, 106 N. Riv-erside Drive, Indialantic.

The church will offer ice cream before and after the concert, with attendees invit-ed to step outside after the concert to view the city of Melbourne’s fireworks display, set to go off at 9 p.m.

“I love seeing the enthusiasm of the sing-ers and instrumentalists who bring this wonderful patriotic music to the commu-nity,” said Teresa Fleenor, acting music director for Eastminster Presbyterian Church. “July 4th is the perfect time of year to express our love and appreciation of our country through the timeless music of John Phillip Sousa, George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin and many others.”

The Melbourne Municipal Band and Festival Chorus will perform music audi-ences all know and love, such as “God Bless America”, “Star Spangled Banner”, “God of our Fathers”, “Armed Forces Salute” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.
