Each module has a distinct practical application and willprovide you with first-hand experience of the equipment foundin a contemporary sport science laboratory.

BSc Psychology with Sport ScienceYou spend approximately 70% of your time studying psychology(including sport and exercise psychology) and 30% studying sportscience. In sport science you have the opportunity to select fromboth ‘pure’ and ‘applied’ modules.

Choose your study routeOur Single Honours courses have been designed to offerthree distinctive educational routes. Students onmajor/minor courses also have the opportunity to specialisein one of these routes during their third year.

Sport and Exercise ScienceThe aim of the Single Honours course is to impart anadvanced understanding of at least two of the three coredisciplines of sport science: these are biomechanics, exercisephysiology, and sport and exercise psychology.Typicallystudents who follow this route have career aspirations withinsport, exercise and health. You may wish to complete a higherdegree in sport science or more specifically in the health andexercise field.

Sports Coaching and PerformanceWe aim to impart in-depth understanding of the bio-physical,psycho-social and pedagogical principles that underpincoaching practice. Some of our areas of study

Sport, Health and Exercise PsychologyThe modules that make up this strand examine the contributionthat psychology can make to our understanding ofsport/exercise participation and performance, and to ourunderstanding of human cognition and behaviour in sport.Theyfocus on the psychology in sport psychology and offer an in-depth understanding of the athlete and exerciser.

Anatomy and Human PhysiologyThese units aim to introduce the basic anatomy of joints andmuscles, and include consideration of the physiology of thecardiovascular and respiratory systems, kidney and fluid balanceand the nervous system. Second- and third-year modulesexamine such topics as the biochemistry of exercise and themechanisms that control energy metabolism.

Research MethodsThese modules aim, first, to develop an understanding ofresearch design, methodology and analysis using qualitative andquantitative approaches. They include work in both experimentaland descriptive methodologies and involve the application ofstatistical tests and forms of survey method with real data. Latermodules provide the skills to conduct empirical studies ofindividuals and groups.

Introduction to Coaching Pedagogyexplores the teaching and learning process in sport – an issuethat is fundamental to coaching success, whether in elite orrecreational, adult or junior, settings – and examines the complexnature of pedagogical practice in coaching. As well as analysingdifferent theoretical positions, you will apply this knowledge in apractical coaching setting and reflect on your own learning anddevelopment as a coach.

Analysis of Human MovementThe biomechanics thread running throughYears 1, 2 and 3introduces you to the analysis of human movement in sport andhealth. The first module considers the application of functionalanatomy to movement analysis. In Years 2 and 3 a fullerunderstanding of movement technique analysis is developed invarious sports, and performance factors are examined using filmand force analysis. In Year 3, you also have the option ofconducting biomechanical analysis of movement from a clinicalperspective.

Sports and Exercise Nutritionintroduces the six nutritional classes and their role in bothresting and exercise states, trains you to use computeriseddietary analysis and gives you the opportunity to investigatedietary manipulation for sporting performance.

Health and Exercise Related Fitnessintroduces you to the theory and principles of training as well asidentifying specific training regimes to meet the specificcomponents of fitness. You will investigate the structuring oftraining to meet both short- and long-term goals.

Electrotherapyaims to give students a basic understanding of the rationaleunderlying the use and application of all forms of electrotherapy, including current knowledge with respect to the healing processat the cellular level.

DissertationThis provides the opportunity to investigate any aspect of sportand exercise science. You are given guidance by a personalsupervisor who has expertise within the relevant discipline, butyou retain considerable autonomy over the work you produce. Some students are able to publish their work in internationaljournals.

Sports governing body coaching award coursesStudents can register for a variety of coaching award courses intheir own time. These are likely to run in the evenings and atweekends and may entail payment of a fee. In addition studentswill be able to access generic coaching courses in areas such aschild protection and safeguarding, first aid and ‘equity in yourcoaching’.

When visiting Hull, the first

thing I noticed about the

department was how friendly

and approachable the staff and

students were.This was a major

influence on my decision to

study here.The facilities are also

of a very high standard, and

there are always opportunities

for hands-on use of the

equipment that is available in

the laboratories.The course is

very practical, allowing you to

gain experience of researching in

the lab as well as in the field,

but also provides the right

amount of theoretical

information on current issues.

The department at Hull is one

of the best in the country. The

lecturers are top researchers in

their respective fields and are

always willing to help and point

you in the right direction if you

have problems with your work.

If you enjoy learning about how

exercise has an impact on

human performance, then the

course here at Hull is one you

should definitely consider.
