Class of 2017-2018
As another academic year begins, we were excited to welcome our new fellowship class. We will
be featuring them throughout the year, so let’s get to know them.
Chris A. DeFalco, MD attended medical school at the University of Illinois, Chicago and completed his residency at Indiana University. The dedication and discipline of the active patient is what has fueled Dr. DeFalco’s interest in pursuing a sports medicine fellowship. Whether the patient is a middle-aged individual who hopes to return to jogging, or a high school advanced athlete, he says they are highly motivated. During this year, he hopes to refine the clinical and surgical skills needed to help these patients return to their activities. Dr. DeFalco, his wife Megan and their dog Cal reside in Downtown Minneapolis. Scott A. Linger, MD attended medical school at the University of Indiana School of Medicine and also completed his residency at the University of Indiana. Working with an active population and athletes during residency drew his interest to pursue a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine. As an active person himself, Dr. Linger understands the patient’s desire to get back to activities and looks forward to learning new procedures and skills to provide excellent care to meet their needs. Dr. Linger, his wife Katherine, and their two children Danielle and Samuel reside in Burnsville. Jarred K. Holt, DO attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Summa Western Reserve Hospital in Ohio. Dr. Holt believes the sports medicine field is arguably the area of orthopaedic surgery with the most expansive and dynamic frontier. New techniques and procedures are being developed and presented regularly and there is constant potential for ground breaking innovation to improve patient outcomes. Dur-ing his year with us, he hopes to hone his technical skills and to enhance his knowledge base for the field. Dr. Holt, his wife Megan and their three children Thomas, Emily and Nora reside in Eagan.

Alumni News
A Few Words… November 2017
Gary B. Fetzer, MD
Program Director
Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
TRIA Orthopaedic Center
The 2017 Fischbone Society Meeting took place in Traverse City, MI in August. Many Alumni and their families
made it to this great academic and social event hosted by some of our Michigan Alumni: Peter McAndrews, DO
(Class of 05-06) and his wife Beth, Matthew Sardelli, MD (Class of 09-10) and his wife Eleni, John Samani, MD
(Class of 95-96) and his wife Miriam, and Andrew Schorfhaar, DO (Class of 06-07) and his wife Beth.
2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Fellowship. We held a symposium, featuring early Fellowship staff and
Alumni, including Shelly Perpich-Koland; Hollis Fritts, MD; David Burstein, MD; David Fischer, MD; Judy Saewert
and Sheldon Burns, MD. Lots of funny and emotional stories were remembered.
Our academic program included orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic topics. Lanny Johnson, MD delivered the
‘What’s Important’ address. Dr. Johnson is a well known and recognized orthopaedic surgeon that has been
devoted to research and development in medicine since retirement from practice.
We were fortunate to have our first Presidential guest, Marc Safran, MD. He is a sports medicine surgeon at
Stanford School of Medicine in Redwood City, CA and presented on the Athlete’s Hip. Other guests and speakers
included C. Thomas Vangsness, MD; Steven Arnoczky, DVM; and John Bergfeld, MD.
Our annual Fischbone Golf Competition was held at the award winning Bear Golf Course at the Grand Traverse
Resort and Spa. Scott Haskins, MD (Class of 16-17), Pete McAndrews, DO (Class of 05-06); Jon Cooper, DO (Class
of 05-06), and Derek Lamprecht, DO (Class of 05-06) were the winners of the 2017 Fischbone Cup.

Meeting attendees
It was great to see all the alumni and friends of the Fellowship at the 2017 Fischbone
Society Meeting in Traverse City. Thank you and congratulations to the meeting
organizers, Maia, Megan, and Dr. Fischer for all the hard work in preparation and
execution of the meeting. Also, special thanks to our local alumni hosts, Drs.
McAndrews, Schorfhaar, Samani, and Sardelli and their spouses Beth, Beth, Miriam, and
Eleni for their planning and participation. The discussions and happenings of the
meeting caused me to reflect on the changing landscape of sports medicine and
fellowship training. Of course, fellowship training programs and educators have to
adjust to the changing workforce environment and needs of our fellows. The fellowship
‘market’ has become very competitive in terms of attracting the best applicants to TRIA.
Right or wrong, selecting an appropriate fellowship training program has become a
‘buyer’s market’ for our candidates. As such, we are always looking for feedback and
ideas for unique educational opportunities for our Fellows, either local or abroad.
Having a strong alumni network and support is important for the maintenance and
growth of our program. We appreciate your continued engagement.

Another Successful Year
Goodbye Class of 2016-2017
Our 2016-2017 Fellows, John Harris, MD, Scott Haskins, MD and Chris Urband, MD completed
their Sports Medicine Fellowship training successfully on 7/31/17. Once again, we say good-
bye to an amazing class and wish them the best on their new adventures.
John Harris, MD will be residing in Dallas, TX with his wife Lincoln and four children. He
joined a private practice group, Texas Orthopaedic Surgical Associates. During their stay in
Minnesota, Dr. Harris and his family enjoyed family bike rides, hockey games and lots of
sledding.
Scott Haskins, MD will be residing in Sheboygan, WI with his wife Carrie and two children. He
joined a private practice group, Prevea Health. Dr. Haskins is a huge MN Sports fan and had
the time of his life assisting Dr. Steubs with the MN Twins. He is also an avid golfer and en-
joyed being in town while the Rider Cup took place in Chaska last year.
Chris Urband, MD will be residing in San Diego, CA with his wife Dr. Lindsay Hegstrom. He
joined the Torrey Pines Orthopaedic Medical Group as a sports medicine orthopaedic
surgeon. Dr. Urband is a very active athlete that enjoyed riding his bike on various MN trails,
as well as participating in many running races and triathlons.
We had a great graduation and farewell party at Dr. and Mrs. Aadalen’s home to celebrate
our fellows’ hard work and accomplishments throughout the year. We wish the three of
them and their families the best of luck!

10 Things You Don’t Know About Me
Every day, I read international news.
Something unique about me is that I speak Norwegian.
The best thing I have ever done is to become a hus-
band and a father.
If I could not be an orthopaedic surgeon, my dream
job would be an astronaut.
One thing I’ll never do again is live in a house without
a sump pump. Cleaning a basement after a flood
(more than once) is no picnic.
My role model/hero us my 94 year old grandfather. He
served mandatory duty in the Army and then has been
a life long farmer. His devotion to our family and
stewardship of the land is an amazing example.
I have several favorite movies (basically all from
childhood) and can’t choose only one: Smokey and the
Bandit, Bad New Bears, and Tommy Boy.
One thing I would like to do but never will is ride in the
Tour de France.
One thing I have not done, but know I will do eventual-
ly is to start a band.
Lastly, my favorite place to be is trying local cuisine
while visiting a new place in another country. I love to
travel.

Where Are They Now…?
Douglas P. Tewes, MD-Class of 1992-1993
Dr. Tewes attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed his
residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Tewes works at Lincoln Orthope-
dic Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, which are the oldest practice in town, with 11 providers and the only
free standing orthopedic surgery center in southeast Nebraska. Dr. Tewes specializes primarily in knee
and shoulder arthroscopy reconstruction, but has an active hip arthroscopy practice as well, thanks to his
co-fellow Dr. Guanche, who convinced him to adventure into hip arthroscopy.
Dr. Tewes has been married to his wife Denise for 32 years, who has been the Choral Director at Messiah
Lutheran Church for 25 years. They have six children, Jacob, Michael, Luke, Samuel, Tom and Kristina.
Jake and his wife Heather blessed Dr. Tewes and Denise with their first grandson, Lewis, and they reside
in Lincoln. Mike and his wife Shelby live in Omaha. He is in his 3rd year of dental school an she is an
NICU nurse. Luke is married to Kelly and they live in Bolivar, MO. He serves as the GA for the Drury University baseball team, and she is a PT student working on
her doctorate. Samuel plays baseball for the Palm Beach Cardinals. Last summer was his first pro year pitching. He is also finishing his business degree at WSU.
Tom also got bit by the baseball bug, Dr. Tewes says, and is a freshman pitcher at Drury University in Springfield, MO. And the youngest, Kristina, who they adopted
when she was 12 years old from Ukraine, is a senior at Lincoln Lutheran High School this year, and will be heading off to college next year to pursue a career in
elementary education.
They love to hang out together as a family. A yearly trip to the north woods of Minnesota is always a highlight, as all the boys like to hunt and fish. Dr. Tewes also
flies a small plane, which has been a real blessing as they try to keep up with all the kids’ activities, specially when they are away for college.
What Dr. Tewes remembers from his fellowship year is that Dr. Fischer would toss out pearls about being a surgeon. They weren’t always recognizable at the time,
but he has found their value over the years, as he established his practice. He says that he learned way more than just surgery from him and all faculty, like the
importance of finding balance between his personal and professional life.
