On July 16, 1969, a rocket manned by three
men blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center
on Merritt Island in Florida. Its destination: the
moon. In the midst of the Cold War, civil rights
movement, summer of love, and the Vietnam
War, NASA accomplished what was thought to
be impossible.
The Apollo 11 mission put a man on the
moon and was spurred on by social issues,
political problems, and international tensions.
Looking at the culture surrounding the moon
landing, it’s amazing that it ever even happened.
